Channing Tatum ‘Concerned’ Crew When He Lost 70 Lbs. for “Roofman” Role
Channing Tatum dropped so much weight while filming Roofman that the crew became “concerned” for him.
Roofman — based on the real-life story of Jeffrey Manchester, who broke out of jail and lived inside the walls of a Toys ‘R’ Us — is “a really thin guy. Like, he's not as big-boned as me,” Tatum, 45, told Variety. He shared that he’d wanted to lose some weight to play the “wiry” Jeff, as he’d recently bulked up for a role.
“I got up to like 240,” Tatum said, likely referencing his dramatic weight gain for the thriller Josephine. But for 'Roofman," Tatum explained that he’d planned to stop his weight loss when he hit 185 lbs. Once I was already going, it's just the days of shooting, it just kept coming off and I got down to like 172.”

“Our assistant director, Mary Ellis, she was concerned,” director Derek Cianfrance said.
“She's like, that’s it … get him a steak right now,” Tatum quipped, adding that the weight loss was, in part, due to an “emptiness” and “sadness” he felt in the character. “I just see myself and I would just seem hollow and the movie ... for me was a lot of, like, loneliness.”
He continued: “A real meditation for that and wanting to be full and trying to, like, fill an empty vessel. That empty feeling sucks after a while,” Tatum added with a laugh.
Cianfrance told the outlet that Tatum had originally planned to lose weight as “Jeff was The Roofman, and he had to get into tight spaces and he has to live inside the walls of a Toys ‘R’ Us.”
“It's harder to do that when you're bigger,” Cianfrance explained. “I was like, whatever you want to do.”
In March, Tatum said he’s finished with gaining and losing weight for roles in an Instagram post where he thanked his chef, nutritionist and trainer.
“I couldn’t make these big swings in my weight without you guys. But I won’t be doing any more fat roles haha,” Tatum said. “It’s too hard on the body and too hard to take off now.”

Channing looks so much better when he's heavier.
He looks gross when he's thin.

Yes, I prefer 'fat' Channing.
Yum...

It doesn’t seem very healthy or smart to be dramatically going up and down in weight and muscle the way he does, now that he’s in his mid 40s.

I wasn't healthy at any age.
But, he was a slim, muscular guy in his 20s.

Other guys his age should take notice and do the same. There’s no excuse for being hefty.

He's 6'1". I dunno, I'm 6'1" and 172 is my goal weight. It's crazy how much he's lost when these last 10 pounds are clinging to me like a spurned lover

At his age, his body is meant to carry some bulk. He looks "methy" at 172 lbs.

He does look like everyone’s white trash, meth-head cousin.

I’m a bit over him.
I know he cultivates this affable persona, but my spidy sense is telling me he must be a bit of a dick, considering how his career has really stalled.
The multiple high-profile relationships are a red flag, too.

Contrarian voice.. 172 is teenage thin for him. But I bet he looked fine at 182.
I will see this movie because I followed the true story and it's interesting.

We’re so used to fat and flab, we’ve forgotten that how he now looks is what a normal adult male should look like. Your belly is not supposed to stick out beyond your waistband.

My "ideal weight" according to BMI charts is about 20 lbs below the weight where I start to look gaunt and sallow and walk around in a mental funk with a sour stomach constantly. I think these formulas were set in a concentration camp.

Tatum doesn't look like a concentration camp victim at 172. He looks like a mature skinny guy. Still dime a dozen in some countries. Italy, France and Netherlands have lots of low body fat 45 year olds.

I still can't believe that in 2025 this guy is still considered a "Hollywood leading man".
In that before/after pic, he looks now like Shane West.

Oh yes he's such the method ACTOR.
You can almost hear the conversation he had last year with his agent - I'm TIRED of playing beefy Magic Mike guys. I want to be taken SERIOUSLY as an actor. How do we do that?
"We need to expand your range - let's do a serious film where you transform yourself. Of course, because it's a smaller film, you'll get paid practically nothing - but you may be able to get some back on box office percentage if it does well. In any event, we can play this whole thing up - it will work WONDERS for your career!"
This meathead isn't serious.

The real clue that he’s on GLPs is that he kept losing weight without trying.
Tirzep really does kill your appetite. A little too much. Days 1-5 after a shot, I have to force myself to eat anything at all. Appetite comes back a bit around day 6.
I spread my doses out a bit more so I have a few days of feeling semi-normal before the next shot.

R35 and R38, I wanted to lose about 40 pounds and I’ve lost 35 truly without trying. This was over a period of about a year. I only dose every 10-14 days, so it works out to about $250 / month that way.
