We could afford all of this stuff and more, if rich people weren’t subsidized via tax code.

What’s fucked up is all the food that goes to waste. Restaurants, grocery stores, even larger events. I know they apps now to address excess product but it doesn’t seem mainstream enough.

Joking aside, I do think we ought to treat the current administration as a disaster because I believe he will collapse the economy soon. It will get bad for those of us who do not have enough income or money saved. Liquidity. So maybe it's smart to act like we did when we had to quarantine. Because shit is about to get real. As the weather gets colder, It's going to get very desperate out here for people. And I worry about families with little kids. I have a lot of dried beans and both beef and chicken bullion. need toilet paper and other stuff. Olive Oil is getting expensive. I'm buying those big boxes of oatmeal. I want to be in a position to just buy fresh stuff, eggs, milk, yogurt, fruit and veggies. But pantry items I intend to stock up as well as getting some meat and poultry items and fish to freeze.

It's amazing to think that raising the age limit on receiving "food stamp" benefits was one of the first actions and main priorities for Donald Trump and the Republican Congress, when he got back into office.

Cutting social welfare benefits.

THAT was their main priority.

Think about it.

AI Overview

Recent rule changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) primarily affect the work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs), expanding the age group that must comply. A federal budget reconciliation bill signed in July 2025 further expanded these requirements and removed some previous exemptions.

Work requirement changes for ABAWDs

The age for ABAWDs who must meet work requirements has been raised in phases, affecting more SNAP recipients. Effective October 1, 2023: The age limit was increased to 52.

Effective October 1, 2024: The age limit was increased to 54.

Effective July 2025: The budget reconciliation bill further expanded the age to include adults up to 64.

To remain eligible, ABAWDs must work, volunteer, or participate in a qualifying training program for at least 80 hours per month. Failure to comply can result in a loss of benefits after three months in a three-year period.

Removed exemptions

The 2025 budget reconciliation bill eliminated several exemptions from the ABAWD work requirements:

Parents with older children: The bill removed the exemption for parents whose youngest child is 14 or older, requiring them to meet work requirements.

Veterans: Veterans who previously qualified for an exemption are no longer exempt.

Homeless individuals: People experiencing homelessness lost their previous exemption.

Former foster youth: Individuals aged 18 to 24 who were formerly in foster care are no longer exempt.

High-unemployment areas: States can now only waive work requirements in areas with unemployment exceeding 10%, making it more difficult to obtain a waiver.

Added exemptions

The same 2025 legislation added an exemption for individuals who qualify as "Indian," "Urban Indian," or "Californian Indian" under the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.

Government cheese line:

1: "I lost my job, then my house, then my wife..."

2: "But we're getting so much in return. ICE raids; trannies out of our armed forces; no more vaccines; religious freedom; and no more queer 'marriages'.

This isn’t the way to discourage multigenerational poverty, we should be finding ways to put these fine, young strapping teens to work to support their families!

I can think of a few.

[quote] The people who don’t have to work, really love the idea of forcing YOU to work.

I do have to work and I do expect other able-bodied people below retirement age to work. I’m not expecting anyone who is similarly able to me and similarly situated to do anything more than what I’m doing.

It’s the outright fraudulent behavior to focus attention to. Want to cut EBT fraud in half?

Make getting EBT annoying, inconvenient and a sheer hassle to access (unless you are disabled, handicapped or elderly.)

Plenty of longhand forms to fill out, in person interviews, and quarterly progress reviews to comply with.

Add a few mandatory home ec, financial budgeting and credit building classes after one year.
