I hope Blanche DuBois wasn't on board!!!

I rode this during my last visit to Lisbon.

They were small and packed and felt more rickety than the cable cars in San Francisco.

by Anonymousreply 3September 4, 2025 12:18 AM

Almost certainly there are foreign tourists among the dead and injured.

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2025 2:07 AM

R1 why couldn't you just have said you'd wished this deadly crash hadn't happened at all and left it at that?

Why do liberals always wish death upon their fellow Americans?

by Anonymousreply 5September 4, 2025 2:25 AM

[quote] Why couldn't this have happened in Utah or Idaho or a Dakota?

Because they don’t have decent public transport?

"Why do liberals always wish death upon their fellow Americans?"

Republicans didn't care if people died from Covid, they just wanted to be able to go to their favorite bar

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2025 3:02 AM

Lisbon has always been overrated.

by Anonymousreply 8September 4, 2025 3:06 AM

I was just in Lisbon. I don’t even remember a funicular? Do they mean streetcar?

by Anonymousreply 9September 4, 2025 3:08 AM

[Quote] Lisbon has always been overrated.

I thought it was just as beautiful as Paris but with too much graffiti. It certainly doesn’t have as many must-see attractions, but still gorgeous

I don’t understand how this became so deadly. What speed was it traveling?

by Anonymousreply 12September 4, 2025 3:16 AM

R1- I agree. Lisbon is a beautiful city. I was there in July right after my 12th gay cruise ( the 12th gay cruise in a row which I did not have sex on). I mentioned all of this in another thread. I also mentioned taking a private tour with a cute and nice and intelligent tour guide. He asked at one point if I wanted to go on that contraption. I said no because it looked too touristy for me. We left for the tour at 10 am and finished at 6pm. I was pleasantly surprised to find I had plenty of energy to walk around all day including climbing many steps outdoors to get good views of the city. I was most certainly the highlight of the entire trip including the cruise.

I had an Airbnb a block away from this tram for 3 weeks in December 2023. I took this up to Bairro Alto all the time. The inside is all made of wood. No cushion seats. The impact must have been severe.

Can we bestow the Fragrant Fag Face Award on Peter Scolari… or does the group feel there are other serious contenders?

by Anonymousreply 15September 4, 2025 3:39 AM

^^ oh dear - that was kind of out of nowhere!

I meant it for the HOTEL opening credits thread

Lisbon is a lot like San Francisco, it has some streets with very steep inclines. A packed cable car would quickly gather speed if the cable failed.

Other Lisbon / SF analogues:

Cable cars

Situated on a coast

Red suspension bridges

Nearby wine regions

History and architecture defined by massive earthquakes (Lisbon 1755, SF 1906)

Actively tanking conversation and societal action on gun control is a great way to assure death of your fellow Americans. So I suppose that normalized the concept.

by Anonymousreply 18September 4, 2025 1:06 PM

Wow, R1, you really have problems.

by Anonymousreply 19September 4, 2025 1:20 PM

I assume once it derailed it didn’t have traction and so slid down the hill until it hit the building where the street/track curves. Not much you could do but brace for impact.

by Anonymousreply 20September 4, 2025 1:39 PM

Actually, SLC has a pretty good tram system (<20 minutes to the airport) and bus system, with the nicest bus drivers I've ever met. Grant it I live in NYC so the bar is so low that there is no bar for transit workers.

Is a Madonna Ok?

by Anonymousreply 22September 4, 2025 3:38 PM

She’s a tramp, not a tram.

by Anonymousreply 23September 4, 2025 7:42 PM

I walked around Madonna's house in Sintra when it was an abandoned ruin. Late 90s. It would have been perfect for cruising, but alas.

by Anonymousreply 24September 4, 2025 8:18 PM

As for their cable cars, they seemed rickety. I guess they are essentially not rickety and this is real outlier event.

Now here's a tip from Blanche you won't regret:

A stranger's just a friend you haven't met!

You have-... n't... met!

STREETCAR!
