WW came up in “shows that retooled“ thread and the WW discussions have gone beyond the retooling, so I thought we need a thread dedicated to.
Does anyone know who else was considered as Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor?

Joanna Cassidy almost got the part, until Lynda auditioned.

I'm the poster from the other thread who said that "Disco Devil" is my favorite episode.

According to Wikipedia (I know, I know), Joanna Cassidy (sure) and Jaclyn Smith (love her like she loved Bootsy Gumdrops, but doesn't seem like that would have worked) were also among those considered.

1970s TV was so campy, yet charming. The old WW and Bionic Woman shows are delightful.

There was a WW pilot TV movie starring Cathy Rigby before the Lynda Carter series.

We must use our combined powers in this thread to analyze every frame of this artifact and discuss it ad infinitum.

Fun fact: Lynda Carter herself invented the famous spinning transformation of Diana Prince into Wonder Woman on the spot as they were filming the pilot. It was never in the comics. They were trying to figure out how to do the transformation when Carter suggested that she could just spin.

Lucy had all but signed on the dotted line, but Gary talked her out of it.
Once she pulled out, they lost Redd Foxx as Steve Trevor as well.

Lucy even got a bikini wax

Can't picture anyone but Lynda in that role (and I thought Gal Gadot sucked)

Lynda was so perfect for the part. Looked like Wonder Woman in the comic books. Had the physical stature of WW. It was one of the best castings I'd ever seen in my life.

And she STILL looks like Wonder Woman. I know she had a lot of work but it was *good* work. Amazingly beautiful woman.

Lynda as Wonder Woman and Christopher Reeve as Superman are the best superhero castings ever.

The first season on ABC took itself more seriously, what with dealing with WWII and Nazis and all. The show started to get campy in its second season, now that they were with CBS and the setting brought to present times. I think CBS wanted the show to compete with ABC's Charlie's Angels in T&A and thus, high ratings.
Wonder Woman's new costume in the 2nd season was cut lower in the bust to emphasize Lynda's décolletage, and the bottom was cut higher at the thighs to showcase her long legs.

I’m trying to remember…when they rebooted to modern times, was there an explanation about where WW had been since WW2?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 2, 2025 7:12 PM |
She went back to Paradise Island for 30 years. WW is immortal so that was why she hadn't aged a day.

If memory serves, R17, once the Allies won the war and her mission was accomplished, Diana went home to the Amazons on Paradise Island. On the first episode of the reboot, there was some contrivance that prompted her mother the queen to decide that the outside world needed Wonder Woman once again. I think it had something to do with rescuing Steve Trevor Jr and stopping a bad guy from stealing an atom bomb.

Joanna Cassidy would have made a great villain.

I could not agree more.
Amazing that with all the super-hero movies that have come out since 2000, none of the casting has been as perfect as Lynda and Chris were back in the 1970s.

I never noticed this until now, but I easily found this side-by-side comparison and can't believe I missed it; I guess I never thought about it.

R22 She’d also thinner in season 2.

Wonder Woman's Season 1 costume, although a little more modest than its 1970s iteration, was still pretty racy for realtime 1940s standards. If you look at the WW comics of that period, WW was either in a skirt or dance shorts.
It made sense, though, to update the costume for the 1970s setting. Those Season 1 granny panties would've been too square for the sexually liberated '70s.

The 1974 Wonder Woman TV movie pilot with Cathy Lee Crosby was Warner Bros attempt at a series deal with ABC. However, despite solid ratings, ABC failed to pick it up.
Undaunted, Warner Bros tried again the following year. This time staying close to the original WW comics and with lovely Lynda Carter in the starring role. The 1975 TV movie pilot, titled "The New Original Wonder Woman" to distinguish it from the previous incarnation, was a ratings smash and landed an ABC series deal.
The modest Cathy Lee WW costume was inspired by the short-lived "The New Wonder Woman"/I-Ching comic series that ran from 1968 to 1973.

For me this episode will always be one of the gayest hours of television ever created:

Wonder Woman's early spins weren't yet fully developed. There's no flash of light and thunderclap. And she's left holding her discarded clothes.
