Let's Talk About the Sci Fi-Fantasy Classic "Cocoon" (1985)

I still think it's one of Ron Howard's best movies, and he adeptly balanced the human drama of the story with the sci-fi fantasy aspects. It won two Oscars, one for Don Ameche (who probably didn't really deserve it) and one for visual effects.

I remember seeing it in a theater when I was in my early 20s, and while I loved it, it made me sad, because it's all about the inevitable process of aging embedded in an impossible fantasy of regaining youth and vitality and living forever. I also remember getting all tingly seeing a shirtless Steve Guttenberg in tiny jeans cutoffs. Even Brian Dennehy had a sexy swagger about him.

I also thought some of the shots of the Florida west coast were really beautiful, especially when they were out on the ocean.

I cried like a baby when Jack Gilford's wife died and he took her body to the pool to try and revive her.

I actually think Gilford should have been nominated and won the Oscar rather than Ameche. Gilford was just wonderful.

I like the scene where Gwen Verdon's sitting in front of the TV in her bathrobe watching "Top Hat" with Fred Astaire and drinking a bottle of beer.

I am now officially older than three of the movie's elder characters were at the time they made the film.

Wilford Brimley was only 51 at the time.

Gwen Verdon and Maureen Stapleton were both 60.

Tahnee Welch is a terrible actress, but she was perfect for her role, because she was basically playing an alien without human emotion who puts on a skin suit and becomes a beautiful woman. Ron Howard knew what he was doing when he cast her. Same with Tryone Power Jr. and the blonde guy with the beard.

I remember being dazzled by Tahnee Welch, as well.

There are just some people who look good on a giant movie screen, and she is one of them.

I remember watching this with my mom many years ago, and when Tyrone Power Jr. came onscreen, she exclaimed, "Oh, my gosh. He looks just like Tryone Power. I bet that's his son."

She loved Tryone Power when she was young.

If you had the chance, would you go away on a spaceship and live forever in another world?

I don't think I'd want to live forever, regardless of where I was.

Ameche was one of the least deserving Oscars since Helen Hayes in Aiirport. I agree that Gilford was very moving and Cronyn always fine. But it should have gone to Klaus Maria Brandauer, the only performance in Out of Africathat felt genuine, or Bill Hickey for his comic Don in Prizzi’s Honor. Robert Loggia was perfectly fine in Jagged Edge, but nothing special and Eric Roberts seemed to be competing with Jon Voight for Ham of the Year.

Ameche's Oscar was more a lifetime achievement award than it was an award for his Cocoon performance.

When they cracked open the cocoon to find that dying alien, and Dennehy realizes his friend has died because these nosy old Florida fucks drained the energy to feed their ancient boners.

Tahnee Welch was prettier than her mom at the same age.

Brandauer won the Golden Globe for his excellent performance. One of those categories where only two GG nominees were nominated for the Oscar, but Eric Stoltz was category fraud.

No one was sexier than Wilford Brimley in that movie.

Accent aside, this YouTube queen is not wrong. Steve was so fucking hot (to my taste anyway) in Cocoon.
