Actresses Who SHOULD Have Won the Emmy
...for their bold, unforgettable portrayals. I'm not going to say someone else should have lost, but, damn, each of these performances was incredible and definitely deserved Emmy gold. Who comes to mind? Near the top of my list...
Laura Linney for Ozark
Kerri Russel for The Americans
Mireille Enos for The Killing
Connie Britton for Friday Night Lights
Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks for Mad Men
Kate Mulgrew for Orange Is The New Black
Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Deuce
Carrie Coon in The
Jessica Lange in Feud
Michaela Coel in I May Destroy You
Margaret Qualley in Maid
Felicity Huffman in American Crime (first two seasons more than the final 3rd season)
...whether or not they were nominated (although most of these women, were)

Elizabeth Montgomery...for SOMETHING!
Nancy Walker and Angela Lansbury.....many nominations and no wins.

God knows I loved Angela Lansbury... but more so for her theatre work and some of her film work. I know Murder She Wrote was hugely successful, but... Emmy worthy?
That said, late in her career, I recall seeing her in a made for TV movie in which she gave a fantastic performance. She was playing a grandmother / matriarch of family in Ireland who were caring for the son of the family who was dying of AIDS. It honestly rivaled some of her best film performances and wasn't -- with all due respect to the legacy of Murder She Wrote -- the least bit hammy.

Mariska Hargitay won Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Law & Order: SVU.
If Mariska can win an Emmy for a very by-the-numbers cop procedural, Angela Lansbury deserved it for Murder, She Wrote.

oh, I agree Murder She Wrote was shit but she was nominated for other things including Sweeney Todd.

I hadn’t seen anything quite like Michaela Coel in I May Destroy You, Pamela Adlon in Better Things and Bridget Everett in Somebody Somewhere on TV.
They were absolutely real.

Totally agree with all of OP’s list and R6.
I don’t know why Better Things didn’t win truckloads of Emmys. The NOLA episode in particular is one of the best things ever put on TV.

I thought Kali Reis was excellent in True Detective Night Country but no one stood a chance against Jessica Gunning in Baby Reindeer.

Rhea Seehorn deserved an Emmy for her role as Kim Wexler on Better Call Saul. She was nominated twice during the last two seasons.

Lena Headey for Game of Thrones

She lost to her "Sweeney Todd" co-star. The category was Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program:
- Billy Crystal in "Saturday Night Live" (NBC)
- George Hearn in "Sweeney Todd" (PBS) **WINNER**
- Gregory Hines in "Motown Returns to the Apollo" (NBC)
- Patti LaBelle in "Motown Returns to the Apollo" (NBC)
- Angela Lansbury in "Sweeney Todd" (PBS)
The award has since been retired; it was last presented in 2008.

Angela Lansbury’s best shot at an Emmy likely came for Sweeney Todd. She lost to her co-star, George Hearn, who was great but not as impressive as she was.
One of the most surreal Emmy omissions of the last 10 years was Lorraine Toussaint missing a nomination for the second season of Orange is the New Black with a big, juicy, brilliantly acted role. The category was eventually won by her co-star Uzo Aduba, who while very talented had little to do that year.
Laurie Metcalf deserved an Emmy for Horace and Pete, but lost to Margo Martindale drinking coffee in a cameo. Cherry Jones (who I love) also won for The Handmaid’s Tale with a do-nothing role.
These days the Emmys are awarded based on buzz and popularity, like the Oscars. No one is watching all the nominees like they did with the tape system.

I would have given it to Laura Linney for "Tales of he City." She was splendid in it and was great at showing the complexities in Mary Ann's character.

Pamela Sue Martin for either season one or two of Dynasty

Eileen Brennan for Will & Grace
Randee Heller for Mad Men

Sarah Paulson for Impeachment. There's one episode that involves Linda Tripp's love of Christmas decorations where Paulson just blew me away.
Merritt Wever for Unbelievable.
Claire Foy for Wolf Hall
Another vote for Jessica Lange for Feud

[quote]Julia Duffy for Newhart.
Duffy was nominated for all 7 seasons she was on "Newhart" and never won.
She lost four times to Rhea Perlman ("Cheers"), once to Jackée Harry ("227"), once to Estelle Getty ("Golden Girls"), and once to Bebe Neuwirth ("Cheers").
I think Perlman could've spared one of hers. She was not that good.

PBS shows from the UK got lots of love in the early 70s but by the mid 70s they stopped getting nominations and awards.
I, Claudius was nominated for best limited series and I think a couple other awards but nothing for that amazing cast...Sian Phillips should have been nominated and won for her Livia.
Ditto for The Duchess of Duke Street star Gemma Jones who was just terrific in the lead role.

Really? Huh. I thought Reis was genuinely terrible. Yes, I also loathed the nonsensical writing and direction of that season of True Detective, but I'm capable of appreciating good performances in poorly written shows and films. I thought Reis was almost shockingly bad for someone cast in a major HBO project and was not surprised to discover she was a boxer turned actress. I think she may have been a better athlete than actress.

I thought Joan Collins and John Forsythe were the only Emmy nominated actors from Dynasty, but apparently Linda Evans had one nomination in 1983, losing to Tyne Daly.
Tyne won Best Actress in a Drama FOUR times. That seems excessive.

Veronica Hamel was nominated five time for Hill Street Blues, but never won. I was too young to appreciate that show, so I don’t know if she deserved to win.

It's Always Sunny should win the Emmy for Awards I've created specifically for it:
"The Who The Fuck Watches This Show?" Emmy
"The Why Do People Think This Show is Funny?" Emmy
"The Why Is This Still On?" Emmy

I've been watching the show for almost 20 years. I love the inside jokes and all the weird side characters who show up every three or four years.
I can see how someone who is used to more pedestrian shows like Young Sheldon wouldn't understand it, r33. Go watch something with a laugh track and laugh your stupid head off.

R34 - I'm not R33. I LOVE Sunny, but I kinda understand the POV. It's really been on too long and none of the new season's episodes can touch a B-episode from their best seasons. But, I feel that way about The Simpsons, too.

The Emmys had better finally get it right and give Lisa Kudrow a win for the upcoming season of The Comeback.
Susie Essman deserved an Emmy for Curb Your Enthusiasm. Never nominated, but should have been. Hilariously profane.
