I think it was choosing to get chained to that awful spy series on Amazon that halted all momentum in his career. It didn't make so much as a ripple in the popular consciousness, and they've filmed two seasons of it (so far).

He retreated into reclusion once his personal life with Brandon Flynn became gossip. He stopped posting on social media which really hurt his visibility and he just fell off the radar.

He's very tiny and he's aging horribly.

He's reasonably good looking, but has he ever shown much talent? I never found him remarkable on Game of Thrones to begin with. If he hadn't shacked up with that Froy guy over COVID, would any of us care?

He is not the type Americans love. Maybe it's for the better. The fetishizing of actors' private lives is obnoxious and I don't mean the DL ridiculing Madden's staying in the closet but shit like the video I linked. (Youtube pushes me content about Zac Efron despite me never having seen any of his movies.) I remember him going above and beyond trying to get buff and be exactly what they wanted him to be and Hollywood kept casting him in bullshit after Twilight. They still won't leave him alone.

He was doing fine! You guys are talking about Game of Thrones but he was in Cinderella, a breakout hit show called The Bodyguard, was everywhere for the Elton John movie, and had been cast in Eternals.

He disappeared overnight when the Brandon Flynn stuff happened. He was even being touted as the lead for Eternals. By the time the movie came out he did press and he was a tiny supporting character. He didn’t even engage too much in press.

He won’t do interviews anymore.

It’s like he ran away from his career because he won’t have to ever answer about his personal life.

Which is so stupid.

I think it was a mix of factors, but mostly what r4 and r7 said. The latter in particular is said, because we all know he'd get more work if he shut down those rumours immediately and got himself a nice beard. Look at countless examples where that worked like a charm.

I probably don't know how this stuff works. But it seems like he was visible enough with Brandon and Froy, and enough people were aware of what was going on. So he comes across as being behind the curve. I think he failed to read the room. Maybe wanting the Bond role too much. It's like when you try to please everybody and end up pleasing nobody. I think some people saw him as trying too hard. Maybe he should have just come out.

Well. If I'm not wrong, he said that his "private life is private", which is basically a coming out statement.

And the direction he's been taking his career in seems really boring.

One who hesitates is lost. He neither came out nor took the trouble to hide dating men. This is vaguely admirable but not good for his career.

When he and Froy did the BLM march, they posted photos, but each one posted photos of himself only. What can you say about that? It seemed somewhat ridiculous.

Jonathan Bailey has proved for the first time ever you can be openly gay and be in big movies and no one cares. It was the first time it’s been truly tested and it debunked the theory that gay men can’t play straight and be in big box office movies.

So either Hollywood is deeply homophobic or privately gay actors sabotage themselves.

It seems disingenuous to march in a parade with your boyfriend, where hundreds of people can see you together, then try to hide it on social media.

I really can't figure out that mindset. If you don't want to be seen together, don't march together. If you do want to be seen together, march together. But don't try to manage it later on social media, because you will be ridiculed.
