Whatever Happened to American Horror Story?

It just seemed to end without any fanfare.

Was it cancelled? Did it just fizzle out?

I think the last season I watched was 1984, but only the first few episodes. Then I got bored.

I didn't even bother watching that stupid Kardashian season.

Then the show just disappeared. SAD!

It used to be "must see tv."

It's confirmed for a 13th season yet to be scheduled or produced. It seems unlikely they'll go to a 14th season, and 13 seems like a logical number to end with for a spooky, occult show.

I've watched every season, sometimes forcing myself through, because I still love the original (and long forgotten) premise. Some seasons are worse than others, and some episodes are nearly unwatchable, but I'll finish it out. For me, the series died when Jessica Lange left although I don't know how much further she could have taken her performances after the side show season. Where else do you go?

by Anonymousreply 5August 30, 2025 5:12 PM

I agree that it wasn't the same show after Lange left. I did really enjoy the NYC season.

[quote] Whatever Happened to American Horror Story?

It had a creative evolution and turned into a reality series. Turn on any news broadcast and you're watching it.

Been downhill ever since Lady Fuckface showed up.

Brief reprise with Cody Fern as the Antichrist.

I'm probably in the minority but I liked AHS Hotel.

by Anonymousreply 10August 31, 2025 2:24 AM

It's fine! It seems its love!

by Anonymousreply 11August 31, 2025 2:30 AM

Hotel was one of the better of the lesser seasons. My personal favorite is season 2: Asylum -- but I know a lot of people hated it.

People raved over "Apocalypse" but I thought it was mostly unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 12August 31, 2025 2:32 AM

Coven was my favorite. I havent watched the post-Lange seasons ver consistently.

by Anonymousreply 13August 31, 2025 2:35 AM

My friends and I were talking about it today. No new season?

by Anonymousreply 14August 31, 2025 2:40 AM

The last season I’ve seen was the one starring Emma Roberts and her unborn child. It couldn’t hold my interest which is why I have up on watching it all of the way through. I’d watch another new season, but I agree the best of the show seems to be behind them.

by Anonymousreply 15August 31, 2025 2:43 AM

I think that was my favorite r10

by Anonymousreply 16August 31, 2025 2:59 AM

I faithfully watched everything through the breakpoint of the latest Kardashian season. After the “break”, I just couldn’t bring myself to see her on screen for another moment.

by Anonymousreply 17August 31, 2025 3:01 AM

Later seasons aren’t as good but I have watched all of them. Hotel is my favorite but Lange is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 18August 31, 2025 3:13 AM

There’s only so many times one can watch the first four episodes of a season that are well produced only to then have the rest of the season go off the rails. It got really boring, really fast.

Delicate was really awful. And it looked and felt *cheap* which isn’t something the show had ever been guilty of in the past. Other than the 2020 pandemic break, last year was also the first without a new season. They did Grotesquerie instead, which could have just been a season of AHS. Still not sure why it wasn’t tbh.

by Anonymousreply 21August 31, 2025 3:31 AM

I think Denis O'Hare and Sarah Paulson were at their best in Hotel and that's part of why the season worked so well. It was the first non-Lange season so I think Murphy and the actors were motivated to work extra hard.

Freak Show, Coven and Hotel are the only seasons I've bothered to rewatch.

by Anonymousreply 22August 31, 2025 3:43 AM

Stopped watching a few episodes into Roanoke. It wasn’t good anymore. Hotel was good until the end. Freaks was more sad than scary. The first season, like most series, was by far the best.

by Anonymousreply 23August 31, 2025 3:43 AM

Asylum was my favorite too. I liked Freakshow because I wanted to fuck Finn Wittrock. I didn’t go anywhere near the Kadarshian season, no thank you. I think Roanoke was when my interest started slipping.

by Anonymousreply 24August 31, 2025 3:53 AM

Freak Show definitely wasn't scary. I like it because it's the most beautifully-shot season. It feels very cinematic.

by Anonymousreply 25August 31, 2025 3:53 AM

I thought Freak Show was plenty scary. Or at least violent. Emma Roberts being literally sawed in half, Ma Petite being crushed by the strong man, the killer clown, and Evan Peters’ hands in the jar all stand out to me.

by Anonymousreply 26August 31, 2025 4:46 AM

[quote]R5 I still love the original (and long forgotten) premise.

Do you mean having a permanent repertory of actors, that stayed on for years?

by Anonymousreply 27August 31, 2025 4:58 AM

Sarah Paulson will starve without AHS.

But I guess I’d starve too, if all I had to eat was ANCIENT PUSSY!

by Anonymousreply 28August 31, 2025 5:57 AM

I recently rewatched Cult, and it stood up well, despite a lot of bitching about it at the time.

by Anonymousreply 29August 31, 2025 6:01 AM

NYC was epically terrible.

by Anonymousreply 30August 31, 2025 7:00 AM

Coven -> Murder House -> Asylum -> Freak Show -> 1984 -> NYC -> Double Feature -> Hotel -> Cult -> Apocalypse -> Roanoke -> Delicate

by Anonymousreply 31August 31, 2025 7:15 AM

If I had to rank the seasons, I'd say:

1st - Murder House. Scary, dramatic, sexy, and fun. Dylan McDermott was so hot. I also liked Teddy Sears. Jessica's portrayal of Constance was fantastic and definitely deserving of her Emmy. Lily Rabe was absolutely gorgeous.

2nd - Hotel. All of the elements that Murder House had, plus it was very stylish. I liked the vampire angle. Evan Peters' best season and best acting.

3rd - Freak Show. Dandy, Scary Clown, Madame Elsa, Ma Petite, and all the other memorable characters. I loved the music from that season, and by far it was the most star-studded cast of all: Jessica, Kathy Bates, Frances Conroy, Angela Bassett, Michael Chiklis, Wes Bentley, Matt Bomer, Gabourey Sidibe, Danny Huston, Neil Patrick Harris, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, Chrissy Metz, Lee Tergesen, Patti LaBelle, Mare Winning ham, David Burtka, plus the regular cast of AHS. That's pretty damned amazing.

4th - Coven. Very strong writing, until the zombies showed up. Myrtle Snow was one of my favorite characters of all seasons.

5th - Asylum. Started out strong and scary, but the alien element ruined it for me.

6th - Double Feature (First Half). Those vampires were scary and creepy as hell. I also loved the campy element of Evan Peters and Frances Conroy singing karaoke in the local bar. The Second Half of Double Feature sucked. The two gay guys were cute, though.

7th - Apocalypse. It was very different from the other seasons, but I liked that they brought back a lot of past characters, and connected Murder House to this season.

8th - NYC. The serial killer was by far, the creepiest part of the season. The acting was great, and the story was strong. It probably should be ranked higher, but I just happen to feel a lot of nostalgia for the earlier seasons.

As for the rest, I thought they weren't very good. I got bored with 1984 halfway through, and Roanoke was just horrible. The acting: UGH! I honestly don't remember too much about Cult. I'm not sure why, but if I can't remember it, then it must not be that good. And I didn't even bother watching Delicate, because I cannot stand any of the Kardashians.

There were only two seasons where I was satisfied with the ending.

One was Murder House, and the other was Freak Show.

I really loved the way Freak Show ended, and it was a great sendoff for Jessica Lange.

Freak show had Sarah as a two headed girl and the FX were flawless. Plus a scene where Elsa leaves Pepper at her sisters that had people crying watching a show called "American Horror Story- FreakShow". Naomi Grosman was robbed of an Emmy nomination.

I like how Season 1 of AHS was not just the typical scares, but how all of these people who owned the house became slaves to the house - not necessarily because of ghosts - but because of the debt, the cost of trying to maintain a lifestyle they couldn't afford and trying to keep up certain appearances. And they can't get rid of the house because they've sunk literally everything into it. I thought that (among other things) was one of the consistent themes across time periods: people who want to get out from out from under what they thought was a bargain only to discover it's a huge albatross.

by Anonymousreply 36August 31, 2025 12:37 PM

I bailed mid sixth season during Roanoke and never watched it again. I enjoyed the first five seasons, but something clicked, and I had sufficient. Glad to miss the Kardashians.

by Anonymousreply 37August 31, 2025 12:47 PM

The only season that made me cry (multiple times) was Freakshow. Although i did cry a bit during the school shooting in Murder House but that was due to PTSD from a similar event I went through. It seems like many pf us stopped watching during Roanoake and didnt return.

by Anonymousreply 38August 31, 2025 12:59 PM

R27 - I meant the premise that while the show is ostensibly about ghosts, witches, vampires, and so on -- it's really about the emotional horror that people perpetrate on each other, intentionally or not. We are the metaphorical monsters. Now it's all about some cartoon monster of the season (like a modern day Kolchak but dragged out) and some ham-fisted yet half-baked "social message".

Nevertheless, I'll finish the series with what is presumably their last season. If for no other reason, I appreciate how in-your-face gay the show was for primetime basic-cable broadcast. The show pushed a lot of envelopes.

by Anonymousreply 39August 31, 2025 1:01 PM

My mother died the week after the "Coven" series concluded.

by Anonymousreply 40August 31, 2025 1:10 PM

I thought it was so shit. Cheap looking and boring. Not scary whatsoever. Not camp whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 41August 31, 2025 2:33 PM

R7 you’re not wrong.

by Anonymousreply 42August 31, 2025 3:07 PM

People were asking for an alien abduction season, now that could be really scary. Murphy said no, It's AMERICAN horror story and had to be in America and space is not that. He got backlash so he retaliated by giving us that ludicrous 50's sci-fi parody that was a complete waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 43August 31, 2025 4:06 PM

It should have ended with Apocalypse when they completed the overarching storyline.

by Anonymousreply 44August 31, 2025 4:12 PM

The first half of Double Feature was pretty good. Apocalypse felt like a slog for some reason.

Is “American Horror Stories” (the anthology) coming back? I like that format. It would be the perfect show to debut in October each fall.

Or is original content officially dead?

by Anonymousreply 47August 31, 2025 4:37 PM

"Coven" was the last season I watched. Like every Ryan Murphy series, it had lost its original appeal and was getting boring and stale by then.

by Anonymousreply 48August 31, 2025 10:08 PM

To be fair, it's not easy to sustain ANY show for 10 seasons.

Don’t get the hate for Roanoke. I actually liked that season. Totally get the hate for Delicate.

by Anonymousreply 51September 1, 2025 12:24 AM

One of the things I don’t understand about Delicate is that it was the only season to be adapted from other material. So why did the plot still seem so all over the place? Also, why did they decide to adapt a novel that year? Was it some kind of attempt to cut down on the cost of hiring an actual writing staff?

by Anonymousreply 52September 1, 2025 8:45 AM

I’ve only rewatched the Lange seasons, but I’ve watched all the other seasons. Each had its moments, but none are anything I’d rewatch. I only made it through 2 or 3 episodes of the last season. I didn’t even care that Kim K was in it, but I just can’t get on board with Emma Roberts as a sympathetic lead. She was fine as a spoiled cunt in Coven (playing herself?) but I never understood Ryan Murphy’s hard on for her and why he kept using her again and again. Sucking up to her aunt?
