Do you agree with this article? The term has been common for a long time in the gay community outside of Black culture. Was it appropriated?
A working relationship and exchange of goods between nations.

They are wrong. Trade is not based on color. Trade in the most general sense means of humble means and seeking "trade" for the sex - money or something. They may or may not enjoy the sex. It's related to hustler or whore. Street Trade means pretty much street hustler - though those really dont exist much, anymore, in rich countries. Rough trade means trade who could cosplay dangerous/dirty or potentially really be dangerous.

R2, until this very moment your definition was what I thought was THE definition, that was all I ever read, saw, and heard about; I have never heard the definition that Jelani guy gives. Interesting!

As an eldergay, my first knowledge of this was guys who were blue collar workers -- truck drivers, delivery men, low-level craftsmen. You know, "in the trades." They might not mind a BJ or HJ but would rarely reciprocate. It's a color blind term. Tase for trade was usually associated with more, ahem, refined gentlemen.

I recall a reference to trade in "Sweet Bird of Youth."

I always thought "trade" meant a hustler. It's kinda spelled out there in the term.

I can no longer afford "Trade" because of this crazy tariff war. 400% for a fucking blow job!

When I heard of it in the 60s it had nothing to do with blacks. Blacks, Chinese, islanders, north, mid, central & South Americans or just about anybody doing sex for money or “things” or housing was just street trash letting you climb on them but giving little back.

"No gay knots for me, Ida! At best, all you've got is trade."

I was under the impression that "trade" meant anyone who presents as really masculine and more importantly, working class.
This is the first time I've heard someone try to define it as a racial thing.

Me too. I've never ever heard it as being related to race in any way. Having said that, rough trade was usually about a hung straight guy trying to get favors because of his perceived masculinity or big cock size, and a lot of Latino and black men "traded" on their substantial endowments or their macho demeanor.
