It’s probably inevitable that we’re going to see ever-increasing numbers of young adults who were transed as kids and are now deeply unhappy.

He hated his own identity, you see, and he thought that makes him a transsexual. But his pathology is a thousand times more savage and more terrifying.

The psychological impact of drugs and "therapy" given to kids that start down the road of transitioning needs to be looked at. I firmly believe there are legitimate transexuals--people who feel they were born in the wrong body and will never be comfortable living as their birth gender. But those people have a chance to live life and figure things out. They transition as adults. Therapy helps them make an informed decision, etc. There are too many factors with transitioning minors. Parents can be deluded and believe they are "saving" their child by supporting or pushing for what a therapist or medical professional advises. They may just want to appease an insistent child, believing it will bring happiness and keep the peace. But there are therapists and medical professionals with their own agendas and beliefs. Lots of the young "trans" crowd seem to approach it as a "tribe" they belong to rather than a fundamental identity issue. Self identification, and the growing insistence on accepting it without question, has really amplified this. It has become similar to kids in the 90s proclaiming themselves to be "goths." The difference today is that people in positions of authority are taking them seriously, and not waiting to see if the person grows out of it. The risk of very unfortunate outcomes from this is high. This school shooting might be an example of one.

Now, I do think there are some real trans people. However, I think there are also a lot of troubled young people who don't know who they are or don't like who they are and want to be someone completely different - and may see being trans as a way to 'start over'.

It's hard for us to remember - but being in your late teens and early 20s is not a fun time. You've got all these pressures and yet your mind isn't fully developed and you are finding out who you really are. Particularly those who feel 'different' or are artistic or aren't on this traditional, conservative "this is what a man/woman is and should act and sound like" path.

I hate that they are bringing up the trans thing as an excuse - it's not the reason why he shot people at all. But we have to also understand that there are SOME who are attracted to the trans idea in order to change themselves because the current 'version' of who they are isn't working.

It's complicated - but I think we need to accept that fact. Of course, no one will because it is seen as undermining the trans movement.

This has nothing to do with being transgender and has everything to do with lack of mental health care and poor access to healthcare generally, two things the GOP are largely responsible for. This tragedy happened because a person who was clearly mentally ill was not cared for or reported to the relevant authorities when their illness became a danger.

R32, the shooter was living legally as a woman. He had changed his name when still a minor, with parental authorisation, to reflect his "female identity" and was also documented as female on his driver's license. He would have been able to use any female bathroom or changing room - or even competed in girls' or women's sports - and no woman would have been able to object. Especially in a "trans refuge" state such as Minnesota, his gender identity would have to be immediately affirmed and challenging it would not be possible.

I love how people are trying to downplay his trans identity while at the same time they would try to crush you if you made the slightest suggestion that immediately legally affirming someone's apparent gender identity, especially a minor's, with no prior psychological evaluation or allowing biological males into women's bathrooms might not be such a good idea.

It's also hilarious that r32 acknowledges that identifying as trans, especially for troubled people, is just one of many identities they could try out as a result of their mental illness. We keep being told that being trans is a stable identity and that kids in particular should immediately have their gender affirmed and be given "gender-affirming care" of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgery.

Westman didn't say that the regretted having identified as trans - he said he regretted being trans, i.e. he still believed he was trans but wasn't sure that he wanted to be. This was partly because he knew that he could not technically be a woman and even if there was a way he could technically become a woman he could still not afford it.

He also said that he did not always feel "girly" but he never felt like a man.

Now that it appears that Westman wasn't so certain of his trans identity what are the New York Times and the BBC, which rushed to call him she/her and Ms. Westman going to do? Will they start calling him they/them and Mx. Westman or will they stick to describing him as a woman to reflect his "legal" status as a woman?
