Tracey Ullman’s Campiest Character Bangs the Cable Guy
I always felt Linda Granger was DL personified. She’s a hopeless has-been, with a bad wig and way too many filthy stories about dead celebrities, but she’s a survivor who never stops reaching.
She’s been attacked by Raymond Burr, outshone by Markie Post, and saved from addiction by Dirk Benedict. And here she is, seducing some hunky 90s cable guy.

A few years ago I booked a trailer in Carson City that was decorated pretty much just like the Linda's living room in that video. Even had a console TV and I loved stay in there

I love Linda’s 1960s home!
My favorite quote of hers was: “I’ve been arrested, molested, comatose, and riddled with cancer.”

Linda’s song about all the drugs she’s been hooked on.

I think Ruby once got into a fistfight with Deanna Durbin back in the day. lol
Ruby: “I says, Miss Granger, you can go to hell. And while you’re there say hello to Marilyn and Judy for me.”
Ruby mentioned that she got good use out of her beaver brush on the set of “Showgirls.” 🤣

I was just going to post that she reminds me of Brenda Dickson R6!
There's even a line in this video where she says "And then I thought you could threaten me in front of Gelson's".... (6.00)

She was totally willing to take a gig as a lounge singer at the Ramada in Palmdale.

Her home decor is more 70s than 60s. I lived it.
Our house had the same stone featured on the facade. In our part of LA, it was referred to as Palos Verdes stone—but it was everywhere.

Linda’s plastic surgery looks tame by today’s standards.

There was an episode where Linda was banned from the MGM Grand after burning it down. She sang “Turn on Your Love Light” and all her fans lit matches. It’s the same episode where she’s mauled by a lion in Vegas after taking a milk bath. lol
She said that Paul Anka wrote “She’s Having My Baby” for her which was a false alarm as she’s was just late.

She’s in a new movie with Cillian Murphy. She’s been doing more drama. She was in the last two seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Cillian let it slipped that Tracey is dating again.

I wonder if Tracey based Linda Granger on a particular actress or if she was a composite of several 70s-era actresses.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 28, 2025 5:22 PM

I think we can safely say the latter. She’s far too creative to simply copy.

Anyone know where any incarnation of the show can be free streamed currently?

There are lots of clips on Youtube but I don't think it's streaming anywhere.

I grew up LOVING Tracey Takes On (and every other show of hers I've tried to catch).
Genius-level comedy. I miss it, terribly. Wish she would do another show like this, or bring back these characters somehow, but I think the cultural landscape today would probably never go for it.
I also wish it was streaming somewhere in full. Why it isn't on HBOmax is ridiculous.

[quote]I wonder if Tracey based Linda Granger on a particular actress or if she was a composite of several 70s-era actresses.
I attended a Q&A with her and she said she based her on Loni Anderson, Farrah Fawcett (Linda was a big 70s Charlie Angels-type show), and all the women she encountered in Los Angeles. She said everyone who eventually ended up on Murder, She Wrote.

Linda Granger reminds me of Linda Gray from the TV show Dallas.

Fern Rosenthal, the spoiled Jewess, was always funny. If you've lived in the NYC Metro area you're definitely familiar with the particular kind of person Tracey is parodying.

Funnily enough, Loni Anderson's recent death got me thinking about Linda Granger. She was definitely the type of 70s-era actress who could have partly inspired Tracey to create Linda.

Any ideas why the early Tracey Ullman Show isn't streaming anywhere? Music rights? Rights to the early Simpsons shorts? FOX being assholes? I would love to see that series again (particularly the tap-dancing sobriety test).

Tracey doesn’t know. James L Brooks doesn’t seem to know. It seems that Disney now owns the rights.

My favorite was Ruby Romaine with her Hollywood insider anecdotes. Linda Granger was okay.
I also liked Mrs Noh Nang Ning because she reminded me of the ladies at the Chinese buffet joint near me, who would berate the customers whenever they stepped out of line, (ex: "NO! You take too many napkin!"). But you just cannot get away with that type of character anymore.

Answering my own question at R18 - There are three seasons of her most recent show FREE on the Roku channel.

Her BBC show was quite good. I love shoplifter Judi Dench. The more topical show Tracey Breaks the News was even better. They shot each episode the week of so that it would be and current as possible like SNL.
Only Tracey could make me actually like Camilla. Camilla running an Airbnb was hilarious.
