Why wasn’t Glenn Close selected to play Miranda Priestly?

Fuck, she’s 100x more fitting for that role.

by Anonymousreply 24August 28, 2025 4:59 AM

I fucking hated that movie. Everything was 'off'. But every queer leaves a wet spot when they gush about it.

by Anonymousreply 1August 27, 2025 4:48 AM

And now they’re filming a sequel.

by Anonymousreply 2August 27, 2025 4:50 AM

Glenn wasn’t perfect for it. But neither was Meryl.

That role was made for Sigourney.

by Anonymousreply 3August 27, 2025 5:05 AM

Meryl nailed it in the cerulean sweater scene. Nobody could have done that better.

by Anonymousreply 4August 27, 2025 5:08 AM

Go to bed, Glenn.

I bet even Pauline Kael, who was not a fan of Meryl, would've had a ball watching her in that scene. She always considered Meryl a better comedic actress than one who excels in drama.

by Anonymousreply 6August 27, 2025 5:49 AM

I strongly disagree. Meryl nailed that role. And I'm not a huge Meryl fan because I can often see her acting. She was scarily natural appearing in DWP. I don't see how anyone could have done better. She was the devil.

I agree the whole movie has an “off” quality. There’s a good movie in there somewhere— Meryl, Tucci, Blunt, even Simon Baker are great.

But there’s this weird, early -90s-TV-movie quality to it. And some cheap and / or outdated production values. The fashion industry bits are cheesy.

by Anonymousreply 8August 27, 2025 6:44 AM

Too butch.

by Anonymousreply 9August 27, 2025 9:07 AM

Love, love, LOVE Devil Wears Prada.

Meryl is fantastic as Miranda. Superb.

Glenn would have brought a different quality to the role. But she might have been able to do it.

"That's all"

by Anonymousreply 10August 27, 2025 6:53 PM

I didn't particularly care for it when released. Having worked for a Miranda-like boss, I was really looking forward to it but walked out heavily disappointed. As portrayed, Miranda just wasn't mean enough!, (for me at least).

But watching it now, it seems to hold up well. Whenever it appears, i become glued to whatever scene I happen in to.

Overall, it's probably Meryl's biggest hit.

by Anonymousreply 11August 27, 2025 7:19 PM

Glenn and Sigourney already played those roles in 101 DALMATIANS and WORKING GIRL, respectively.

by Anonymousreply 12August 27, 2025 7:21 PM

Meryl was perfect and yes, the cerulean sweater scene proved it. That was the scene where she nailed the character completely.

by Anonymousreply 13August 27, 2025 7:24 PM

I would've loved to have seen La Dunaway play Miranda Priestly.

No, no that wasn't a question.

by Anonymousreply 15August 27, 2025 7:33 PM

Why wasn't Susan Sarandon selected?

Why wasn't Jessica Lange selected?

I'm sure they would have been under consideration if Meryl had said no.

They went to first choice on the list first and then would have continued down the list

by Anonymousreply 16August 27, 2025 7:39 PM

Was Glenn Close even considered? What was the casting process? I just assumed Meryl was attached from the beginning. All the big actress parts get offered to Meryl first, everyone knows that. Especially a role like this, which could have been created with Meryl in mind if it wasn't based on a real person. She's that perfect for it.

I do think a lot of the actresses mentioned would have done something interesting and captivating with the role, but I can't imagine any of them besting Meryl in it.

by Anonymousreply 17August 27, 2025 8:04 PM

Glenn wasn't selected because she's not box office. Plus she would have done a more straightforward interpretation like her Cruella De Vil. There would be no subtlety. Meryl reworked that character to make her infinitely more interesting and realistic.

R3, I gather Sigourney Weaver played a Miranda Priestly type character in an HBO pilot about the fashion industry called Spring/Fall. It’s just been sitting in a vault for many years now

by Anonymousreply 19August 27, 2025 8:24 PM

Good, Glenn. Now do France’s MacDormand.

by Anonymousreply 20August 27, 2025 9:00 PM

Supposedly Streep had to really fight for Miranda to have white hair.

by Anonymousreply 21August 27, 2025 9:06 PM

One of my favorite Meryl performances and it's one of those performances where I can't really see anyone else in the role because Meryl owned it

by Anonymousreply 22August 27, 2025 9:25 PM

The real question is: Why wasn't Billy Porter selected to play Miranda Priestley!!!

by Anonymousreply 23August 27, 2025 9:35 PM

I gather whatsername from Ugly Betty is doing the stage musical version in London right now and playing Miranda exactly like she played Wilhelmina.
