This actually happened at a hospital that I worked in decades ago. The nurse noticed something cloudy in the IV bag after the mother visited. She immediately stopped the drip and it was sent for testing. It was confirmed to be fecal contamination. There was already suspicion that the mother of this child was making him sick. Ultimately, it was decided that she had Munchausen by proxy. Munchausen by proxy was all the rage in those days. The movie "The Sixth Sense" portrayed someone with it as did a lot of TV shows aroundthat time. Mother's or women that harm children are often diagnosed as having some type of disorder to explain their behavior. Post-partum psychosis is another common one.

R14 No. This case was probably 25 years ago. We had 2 cases of "Munchausen" at around the same time. The other involved a foster-mother who was purposely infecting the little girls central line causing life-threatening infections and repeated hospitalizations.

The case presented in the OP is more recent than that. According to CNN, "Alberts said her actions were meant to get her son moved from the intensive care unit to another Riley unit, where she believed “the treatment was better,” the documents state". "Alberts was found not guilty of attempted murder charge, online court records show".

So poisoning her child to get him more medical help? Gee, what could go wrong. Thanks mom.
