Let's discuss " Up the down staircase" (1967)
I recently caught this movie online (totally not in the russian youtube that has a gazillion hard to find movies) and found it pretty decent, despite it being from a genre I dont love (white, well meaning, naive teacher teaches a bunch of unruly inner city kids with various problems). I thought it was a bit more realistic and less sacharine than the others. And its interesting to see a 60s take on the genre. Sandy Duncan is good here and there are other great supporting roles, particularly dear Jean Stapleton.
Not gonna lie though....part of me wanted her to screw that Joe guy. Fuck me, was he good looking. I would have told that kid the only way he was getting into my pants was if I werent his teacher, and that for that, he'd have to graduate. How's that for an incentive?

This is one of the least compelling trailers I've ever seen

Now I want to see Sandy Duncan in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

I remember Judith Crist accusing Sandy Dennis of using mucous as her medium.

Sandy Duncan wanted to do it, but Lucy and Gary talked her out of it.

Sandy Duncan was always good; especially loved her in "The Four Seasons".

It's a compelling and well-acted movie. Not great, but it makes for a good double feature with To Sir, with Love (also from 1967).

I'm so old that I did a book report in high school on the original novel before the movie was even released. The book was better than the movie (which I saw later.)

I haven’t seen it (or read the novel) in years, but I remember liking it.
My high school and junior high did have up and down staircases. I wonder if those are things of the past.

That was my senior play. I was casted as the principal.

I always liked Sandy Dennis. She died too young, at 54, of ovarian cancer.

I went to school in suburban California; none of the schools I went to (until college) had stairs. An urban New York high school seemed so foreign to me. (Although my parents grew up and went to school in San Francisco, where they did have multi-level buildings.

Haha Pauline Kael wrote that Sandy acts by blinking as if she'd taken pills and had been awakened in the middle of the night.

Sandy was charming, especially in the inventive acid trip sequence where she sang “I’m Flying” while soaring above the heads of her unmanageable students.
