I got a bunny!

It is the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life. This is what he looks like.

Ask me anything!

Can you hold it without it pissing or shitting all over you?

by Anonymousreply 1August 25, 2025 11:51 PM

Is he a rescue rabbit?

by Anonymousreply 2August 25, 2025 11:51 PM

Dollface thread.

by Anonymousreply 3August 25, 2025 11:59 PM

Don't fall in love with it if my experience with bunnies is any measure. Dead by week 3 or 4 , every one of them. Or else my mother just told me it was dead and opened the back door for it.

I've told this story before on DL: a friend's sister adopted a dwarf rabbit as a house pet. She used to bring it to bed with her, and shake out all the little turds* in to the floor in the morning. One morning, she got up to discover her pet rabbit had chewed off half the hair on her head.

*Rabbits have an interesting digestive system in which they eat their own feces before they're finally turned into those little turds.

[quote] Can you hold it without it pissing or shitting all over you?

Yes, but I am letting him get acclimated before I pick him up too much.

[quote] Is he a rescue rabbit?

No, but I felt sorry for him being where he was. I'll get him a rescue rabbit partner once his balls are chopped off.

Hi OP!

Longtime domestic rabbit keeper here. I think they are wonderful pets for the right person.

I can try to answer any questions you might have if you are new to rabbits.

Congratulations!

by Anonymousreply 7August 26, 2025 12:07 AM

What’s your address, OP?

That wascally wabbit!

Congrats, OP! I hope everything works out for both of you.

by Anonymousreply 9August 26, 2025 12:11 AM

Very cute, enjoy your new furry companion!

by Anonymousreply 10August 26, 2025 12:14 AM

Go for it OP. You have r7 to help you out.

My friend had one and her three cats groomed the bunny. Lovely little thing. But it did not live as long as the cats.

by Anonymousreply 11August 26, 2025 12:18 AM

Thanks, r7! Do you know anything about lion head rabbits? I got a boy one.

by Anonymousreply 12August 26, 2025 12:23 AM

r7, one thing I noticed is that the bunny is afraid of me but not my rescue dog (chihuahua-terrier mix). My dog whimpers and gets right in the rabbit's face (through the crate). It doesn't bother him, though. He's curious and smells the dog, even. The rabbit is warming up to me and lets me pet him tonight. I am not picking him yet. I got him yesterday.

Is your dog a rescue dog?

by Anonymousreply 14August 26, 2025 12:41 AM

r5, yes and finding that out made me see Easter candy in a whole new light.

by Anonymousreply 15August 26, 2025 12:45 AM

How many souls a day do you need to feed that devil spawned animal?!

by Anonymousreply 16August 26, 2025 12:57 AM

Get the bunny neutered

by Anonymousreply 17August 26, 2025 1:09 AM

R17, OP is planning to. See r6.

by Anonymousreply 18August 26, 2025 1:14 AM

R12, I had a lionhead once.

Keep an eye out for mats. Rabbit fur can be tricky. If a mat appears, try to pick it out with your fingers. Don’t cut it; this can lead to a skin injury. (I know this from experience.) If a mat is bad, you can pull it out using a seam ripper from a sewing kit.

And get him neutered as soon as you can. You’ll have to wait a couple months after the procedure to get another rabbit because the hormones continue coursing through even after the balls are long gone.

And then be ready for a possibly long and frustrating process of introduction before you can leave the rabbits unsupervised. I’ve had bondings that happened in two minutes, another that took six months (my current pair), and one that never took, leaving me with two rabbits who couldn’t be together without a barrier. They are complex critters.

R19 here, I forgot to sign as the Rabbit Enthusiast Eldergay from r7.

During WWII many people started raising rabbits for meat. So there's that, OP.

If I want a furry companion, I'll get a husbear.

Lapin à la moutarde en France r24. No. It doesn't taste like chicken. Gross

by Anonymousreply 27August 26, 2025 1:57 AM

He's adorable.

I got four chickens between yesterday and today. Not all at once.

by Anonymousreply 30August 26, 2025 2:03 AM

Thanks r7. I contacted the rabbit rescue in my town. When after Labor Day, I'll look into neutering and hopefully at Christmas the rescue can help find a friend for him. He is very scared of me. I pet him a little without picking him up. I got him a toy mobile and a hiding spot.

by Anonymousreply 31August 26, 2025 2:08 AM

He will need to eat Timothy Hay

They will use a litter box

When they’re happy they grind their teeth

When frightened they will thump the floor

They carry their heat behind their ears, so if you can gently blow on them to cool off

They don’t like to be picked up much. The worst thing ever is having a bunny in a classroom and having kids constantly touching it and petting zoos. Those bunnies don’t live long

If your rabbit is in your yard supervised and is happy to see you, it will spring in the air and do twists.

My vet dreaded it when I brought mine in for grooming.

They can be feisty and are quite strong. Mine was a rescue rabbit. From my work window saw a bunny wandering around in the cemetery across the street. The worker said some guy dumped her there. It took two people to hold her down she fought that hard (which broke my heart to be part of)

Old telephone cords are a favorite and running through a Quaker Oats canister. They love to chew and cardboard is something they like.

If you keep them in a cage (I hope not) be sure to put a pad down so they’re no standing on wire. Toys are a must if you don’t interact much like a lot of people do.

They can be cute an funny and mine used to jump on my bed and get in my face to wake me up

Mine loved cilantro and raw oats only as a treat.

I had mine for 8 years and she was an absolute delight and such a sweetie.

It will take time for adjustment.

We moved to a rural area this year. A Jack Rabbit with hella long ears appeared in our backyard a few days ago, just staring at us askance through the slider. The cat was scratching on the glass door, crying to be let out. He wanted to play. Went to the fridge to grab some carrots, but it ran away. I felt stupid. Don't even know if rabbits actually eat carrots. It looked well fed, anyway.

[quote]Don't even know if rabbits actually eat carrots

They do, r33.

by Anonymousreply 34August 26, 2025 3:36 AM

Bunneh.

by Anonymousreply 35August 26, 2025 10:37 PM

It looks like the Black Phillip of bunnies

by Anonymousreply 36August 26, 2025 11:39 PM

Black Phillip! Black Phillip!

by Anonymousreply 37August 26, 2025 11:51 PM

Yes, I feed him hay. I bought him a fancy feeder/litterbox that will be delivered tomorrow. He is still very shy, but he likes playing with the toy mobile I got him. I also give him pellets and tiny bits of lettuce.

by Anonymousreply 38August 26, 2025 11:56 PM

Is your bunny funny, honey? Does he have money? Is his nose runny? Does he like it sunny?

by Anonymousreply 39August 27, 2025 12:09 AM

Not sure I can like a bunny that has better hair than myself.

by Anonymousreply 40August 27, 2025 1:31 AM

He's even cuter than the bunny in the OP photo.

Bunny and I were in the semifinals, the very semifinals.

by Anonymousreply 42August 27, 2025 11:46 AM

Tonight he let me hold him and I brushed his fur. He seemed to like it.

by Anonymousreply 43August 28, 2025 1:07 AM

I hope it’s Timothy hay you are feeding it.

Pretty. I like those seal point Guinea Pigs too.

‘’If that the bunny you wanted Marion you sure got a good one’’

by Anonymousreply 46August 28, 2025 6:16 AM

He/she is very cute but wouldn’t you have rather gotten a puppy?

by Anonymousreply 47August 28, 2025 6:17 AM

Get another one. Rabbits are social. It’s cruel to keep one alone.

by Anonymousreply 48August 28, 2025 7:21 AM

There's nothing like a good old fashioned rabbit stew - delicious, OP!
