Dorothy Zbornak becomes Eleanor Grabowski - Depression-era first name (bonus points for the association with a non-traditionally feminine First Lady) and a somewhat inelegant Eastern European last name.

Blanche Devereux becomes Amanda Ravenal - Tennessee Williams heroine first name and Southern Huguenot last name.

Rose Nylund becomes Joyce Olafson - one-syllable first name with a “sweetie pie” vibe and a Scandinavian last name.

Sophia Petrillo becomes Maria Sorrentino - Italian first name that doesn’t lend itself to an anglicized nickname and an Italian last name.

Considering Bea, Estelle, and Herb Edelman were all Jews (and played Jewish, especially Estelle), it would make much more sense for Sophia to be Sophie Rothstein and Dorothy and Stan to be Ruth and Sam Levy.

In one of the Golden Girls books Tony Thomas, a Lebanese-American, talked about what he referred to as the "semitic humor/sensibility" that he felt was shared by the Lebanese, Sicilians, and Jews. It seems that he thought that the sensibilities were similar and it didn't really matter whether the characters were Jewish or Sicilian. I do think that delineating Italian New Yorkers and Jewish New Yorkers especially can be difficult to do and I think that was the situation with Dorothy and Sophia.

Only DL could come up with another stupid take on the Golden Girls!
