Palm Springs Restaurant Recommendations

I know. I know. But…

…I’ve been asked to spend a week dog-sitting. It’s a stunning house — of course, mid century perfection. A pool and hot tub. And a super cute terrier.

All to myself.

For 7 days.

What are the best restaurants? I’ll be there over my birthday — so I’d like to take myself for a decent meal or two.

Specifically, not Trumpy restaurants.

The Palm Springs Reddit page has some good listings of restaurants on their FAQ....I linked to it below.

Tropicale is a restaurant that is supposedly gay owned by gay MAGAs so steer clear of that one. Farm, Tac/quila and Clandestino is run by a couple who apparently donate to LGBTQ causes, BUT her ex husband is a huge MAGA dude and involved with far right extremist groups, so some people won't go to her places. There's also Elmer's, a bit of a divey diner - they've apparently also donated big time to MAGA/Trump, and I think Bill's Pizza is on the MAGA list too.

I'd also personally suggest avoiding Lulu, Kaiser Grille, and a few other places that are right in the thick of the tourist area downtown, because their food is shit and all have had rodent issues.

It's a resort town so there isn't anything like what you'd find in a larger town or a foodie town like LA. That being said, some OK stuff.

Sherman's is not mindblowing great food, however you may enjoy the atmosphere, it's a combo old Jewish deli/greasy spoon diner. Lots of people watching and really amazing desserts so you may celebrate your birthday there.

My favorites in town are Crudo (new ceviche place) and L'Atelier (cute friendly waiter, quirky French inspired breakfast menu) as well as Il Corso (Italian) and Spaghettini (also Italian, duh). A little farther away in Smoke Tree, I like Native Foods (vegan), Low Desert (gay owned or managed fast casual Mexican) and Viet 533 Fusion.

Some people I know have recommended Copley's, but I've never been. Also recommended to me but have not been yet: Willie's (in Rancho Mirage), 849, Saffron, John Henry's Cafe.

Happy dining (and happy birthday, whenever it is!)

I love Billy Reed's, which is like eating in a Columbo episode. So overdecorated it's spectacular.

The food's not bad and it's pretty cheap.
