Teen Tells Parents She Is 'Tired' of Translating for Them While 'Golden Child' Brother Acts 'Like He's Too Good' to Help

A young woman seeks support from the Reddit community following years of shouldering the responsibility of translating for her immigrant parents — a role she never asked for but has carried since childhood.

Now, at 19, she’s drawing a boundary for the first time, and it’s caused a painful rift within her family.

“I’ve been the one handling everything for my parents,” she writes, explaining how she’s managed everything from filling out forms and scheduling appointments to speaking with banks and reading legal documents since she was just 11.

Since when does People magazine recycle content from Reddit, of all places? It truly is the End Times.

by Anonymousreply 1August 24, 2025 3:03 PM

Good question, r1. I know People isn’t exactly the Atlantic Monthly, but still it’s reporting — did People do anything to verify any aspect of this story?

It’s REDDIT for fucks sake. The entire story could have been made up by some social media cosplayer.

Have any of you ever read any threads on AIO? 99% of them are clearly completely fabricated.

by Anonymousreply 2August 24, 2025 3:15 PM

Reddit? Dafuck?

by Anonymousreply 3August 24, 2025 3:16 PM

OP your post is worse than the stupid Soap Opera threads.

by Anonymousreply 4August 24, 2025 3:18 PM

Does the People article ever identify the country where the immigrant parents are from?

by Anonymousreply 5August 24, 2025 3:32 PM

Reddit is full of cunts who feel attacked by other people's expectations.

"My parents expect me to HELP with something. Is this a red flag from two narcs? Should I go no contact?"

by Anonymousreply 6August 24, 2025 11:14 PM

R1 there are many articles out there ripping off reddit threads and youtube essays with no credit at all

by Anonymousreply 7August 24, 2025 11:21 PM

It's not just that this girl doesn't want to do keep translating right now, she doesn't want to keep translating for the rest of her life. After nearly a decade, her parents should take some initiative to learn the language already.

by Anonymousreply 8August 24, 2025 11:22 PM

Why haven't the parents learned English in all these years??

by Anonymousreply 9August 24, 2025 11:43 PM

Her parents probably speak enough English to get by but lack confidence when it comes to complicated things like legal forms and doctor's appointments. There are certain situations where you really don't want to make a mistake because you misunderstood a word or two. My boyfriend acts as a translator for his dad in high-stakes situations and that's why I have little sympathy for this 19 year old.

by Anonymousreply 10August 24, 2025 11:45 PM

19 year old girl = Barron

Parent needing translation = Vairst Letty

Legal docs = yearly revision of prenup

by Anonymousreply 11August 24, 2025 11:49 PM

[quote]"My parents expect me to HELP with something. Is this a red flag from two narcs? Should I go no contact?"

Basically every Reddit post ever.

by Anonymousreply 12August 24, 2025 11:52 PM

This was the case in my family (parents immigrants from Spain). It all fell to me because I'm an only child. I didn't mind mostly except for doing business on the phone. I'm anxious to begin with and customer service reps would hear a child's voice and, of course, were immediately put off. Some would ask for the parents right away. Others were patient and, if the issue was simple, I could get through it. When they asked for my parents, they'd get angry and tell me to tell them what I had already just said. The rep would insist on putting my parents on. I'd try to explain and each party would get more exasperated. It was just awful.

Same dynamic with my neighbor. She's Mexican and is the oldest so it fell to her. Next oldest took over when she went off to college. But three decades later she's primarily in charge of overseeing their healthcare even though sibs live in the area.

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2025 11:59 PM

Talk about lazy plagiarizing. This story went from Reddit to People and now here? Why did you choose this boring topic, OP?

by Anonymousreply 14August 25, 2025 12:18 AM

R14 I think it's clear that OP chose this topic because it's instinctual for DL'ers to want to want to identify one member of a conflict as a cunt pretty much immediately, and this story pits two sides against each other (Gen Z and immigrants) that OP feels would make for appealing rage-bait.

by Anonymousreply 15August 25, 2025 12:26 AM

I think the girl's issue is that she's expected to do everything to help her parents while the brother does nothing.

by Anonymousreply 16August 25, 2025 12:31 AM

As a former immigrant I side with the girl. The lazy ass parents never bothered to learn the language properly and now the girl who is probably chockfull of other obligations and needs to build her own life is saddled by the constant needs of her parents. Thankfully wasnt my case my parents knew english before even moving.

by Anonymousreply 17August 25, 2025 12:33 AM

"Thankfully wasnt my case my parents knew english before even moving."

The only immigrants who that has ever been true of, with the exception of people from former Soviet Union (because their masses were so highly educated), most of the Commonwealth countries, and the Philippines, are rich ones. Kudos to your mom and dad for veing able to afford lessons.

by Anonymousreply 18August 25, 2025 12:53 AM

R18 Did they do something wrong?

by Anonymousreply 19August 25, 2025 12:55 AM

What an ungrateful little cooze!

They should have dumped her at an orphanage at birth!

by Anonymousreply 20August 25, 2025 12:59 AM

Please r18. Many Europeans from countries where English is not the primary language speak fluent English no matter what their socioeconomic status is.

by Anonymousreply 21August 25, 2025 1:08 AM

This never happened.

by Anonymousreply 22August 25, 2025 1:41 AM

This is why English should be the official language of the US and immigrants should be forced to learn it. The rest of the Western world does this. A common language binds people together instead of isolating them.

by Anonymousreply 23August 25, 2025 1:43 AM

What's with all the reposting of People articles lately?

by Anonymousreply 24August 25, 2025 1:43 AM

Lately? We are GAY.

by Anonymousreply 25August 25, 2025 1:46 AM

[quote] This is why English should be the official language of the US and immigrants should be forced to learn it.

Forced, how?

by Anonymousreply 26August 25, 2025 1:49 AM

My question is what did the parents do before the kids were able to talk. Before they were literate and could read/write. Hell even after that stage the kids would still have to be at least 8 or 9 before they could functionally conduct business, correctly fill out forms etc. or did the kids move here as bi-lingual children. I don’t feel like reading the article.

by Anonymousreply 27August 25, 2025 1:49 AM

An extremely high % of these kinds of Reddit posts are made up. Some by AI and some by attention seekers who spend most of their time online.

by Anonymousreply 28August 25, 2025 1:55 AM

[Quote]This never happened.

What are you talking about? This happens ALL the time and is actually an extremely common shared experience for 1st generation Americans, Canadians, and Brits.

by Anonymousreply 29August 25, 2025 2:03 AM

That’s nice r29, but people are hit by cars all the time, and so if I go on Reddit to post about that time I was hit by a car, is my story true because it “happens all the time?”

by Anonymousreply 30August 25, 2025 2:06 AM

R30

by Anonymousreply 31August 25, 2025 2:07 AM

Can't the parents just use Google translate and give their daughter a break already?

by Anonymousreply 32August 25, 2025 2:07 AM

r31

(not really, but why do people do that?)

by Anonymousreply 33August 25, 2025 2:10 AM

R32 How much luck have YOU had trying to teach your parents new forms of technology? Because after nearly a decade, I still can't get my parents to understand how group texts work or how not to hold the phone up to their nostril when using FaceTime.

by Anonymousreply 34August 25, 2025 2:12 AM

R18 my dad grew up in Argentina but in an english speaking household (his family was British, and english was his 1st language) My mom studied english in college and was an english teacher. Regardless, the 1st things those parents should have done is taking english lessons. If they couldnt afford it, there are volunteers that teach. Or they could have gotten their kids to teach them.

by Anonymousreply 35August 25, 2025 2:12 AM

R33, they want to eat their cake and have it too.

They block someone they disagree with, but they’re still dying to see what was said.

by Anonymousreply 36August 25, 2025 2:13 AM

R33 Because I had R31 blocked for some reason or another but was curious to see what they said to me in their mention. This helped me confirm why I had them blocked in the first place (cunt).

by Anonymousreply 37August 25, 2025 2:15 AM

r37 Thanks! I actually had seen it before but was confused.

by Anonymousreply 38August 25, 2025 2:17 AM

Yes, silly selfish bitches will regularly do that, r38. They don’t care how annoying it is to the rest of us. They only care about what they want.

by Anonymousreply 39August 25, 2025 2:22 AM

My poor cousin was around 10 when he started being his Cuban parents translator. They both lived here for decades and died, and never attempted to speak english. Not a problem in Miami, kind of a big one in N Fla . He was saddled with his parents until the day they died. They consumed his whole life. I always felt great pity for him. I would translate for my grandmother but she understood english just fine and spoke it albeit with a heavy accent . I do love i learned spanish because of her ,its come in handy a few times over life. Ive forgotten much now because I havent really spoken it in years.

by Anonymousreply 40August 25, 2025 2:28 AM

R31 Die in a grease fire. I’m not r30 but I haven’t seen some cunt do that in a while. Own the fact that you block and don’t cheat.

by Anonymousreply 41August 25, 2025 3:17 AM

R39 Yes, and those people are narcs! We all need to go no contact with these fuckers.

This reminds me of that episode of "True Life" I'm supporting my parents. One of them was an maybe 18 year old Hispanic chick whose parents didn't speak English or work and just sat around waiting for her to get home and do stuff for them.

[quote]OP your post is worse than the stupid Soap Opera threads.

Whether fabricated or not, this story is so AIO/AITA.

I have been reading Reddit for a few months, and recently deleted AITA and AIO and whatever other AI threads that I was following. I couldn't stand reading about this constant conflicts. One thought I had was what a minefield these subs were for soap opera headwriters. I couldn't come up with all this conflict on my own. The worst were the psychobitchcunt sisters of the brides, and the slightly less horrible mothers-in-law.

So now, I mostly look at Reddit for the various cat threads. Occasionally, an interesting face + penis combo will pop up in my feed.

by Anonymousreply 43August 25, 2025 4:48 AM

R43 As a gay man with four married sisters, I can assure you, the sister-of-the-bride psychodramas are as real and as exhausting as those posts claim. If I'm being honest, so are the gay-brother-of-the-bride ones.

by Anonymousreply 44August 25, 2025 6:23 AM

I also had to cull the AITA/AIO subs from my reddit feed, r43. I especially hated questions with screenshots of really mean and lengthy text conversations. That stuff made my skin crawl, like I was trapped in their shitty relationship for a minute. That stuff shouldn't be shared with the world, imo.

Now the feed is just movies, cars and shirtless men.

by Anonymousreply 45August 25, 2025 11:31 PM

This would be really annoying and why can’t her parents learn English?

by Anonymousreply 46August 26, 2025 3:37 AM

Idk but anytime I run into a particularly cunt-y or assholey post on reddit, I go to the persons post history and there's always pages upon pages of posts on those sites. Similar thing happens with fauxmoi, popculture chat and pics subreddits.

by Anonymousreply 47August 26, 2025 4:13 AM

The meanest and dumbest people in the gay subs also post in the Drag Race subs and in subs dedicated to shows like Scandal and The Vampire Dairies.

by Anonymousreply 48August 26, 2025 4:23 AM

I blocked AIO/AITA but other conflict subs pop up like heads on a hydra
