World War II has never been hotter
This photo was taken by a war photographer who was on a PBY (a kind of flying boat) in the Pacific in 1944.
The crew had just landed in the water to retrieve a U.S. pilot who’d been shot down. This Navy crewman stripped naked to swim to the pilot to rescue him.
As the rescue wrapped up, a Japanese fighter appeared and began its attack run on the PBY, still sitting on the surface. The naked crewman rushed to his side machine gun station to defend the flying boat, and was able to chase the Japanese plane off.
Some say his name was Gatlin, and was awarded the Navy Cross for his action that day. I’d have given him another reward.

It must have been gay men on Madison Avenue who did the beloved Cannon Towel ads circa 1943, depicting Marines and GIs in various states of undress.
The War in the Pacific was a riot of nudity.

I think it's it in this book I bought in 2005. It has a lot of unclothed seamen.
