California redistricting: they're scared

Newsom said if Texas holds a midterm redistricting, he'd hold a special election so voters could choose do the same thing.

Not 24 hours after Texas did it I got a mailer from "Protect the Voters First Act," saying it was "a threat to California's landmark election reform" and warning "we cannot save democracy by burning it down in California." Oh, and it will "set a dangerous precedent."

Damn, that was quick. They really must be scared of California, Illinois, and Maryland following Texas' lead.

I got the same thing in the mail and immediately threw it away.

Go Gavin!

by Anonymousreply 1August 21, 2025 9:00 PM

Unfortunately, OP, Maryland & Illinois are already heavily gerrymandered, so they're not rich targets. NY is, but the '28 election would be the first opportunity for the state to make changes.

by Anonymousreply 2August 21, 2025 9:41 PM

Its a good thing for the Republican states to do the redistricting.

Very bad idea for those evil Democratic states to do it. They're corrupt,

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2025 9:42 PM

It already leads in the polls by 22 points.

The Democrats have to win so big next year that no amount of cheating can derail them.

by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2025 10:00 PM

R5 Agreed

by Anonymousreply 6August 21, 2025 10:01 PM

The Supremes will scupper this.

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2025 10:11 PM

Lots of Trumptards floating around the DL today.

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2025 10:20 PM

Gerrymandering won’t save the dems.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2025 11:08 PM

I googled one of the guys who endorses this and he's a major GOP donor with ties to Berkshire Hathaway.

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2025 11:22 PM

[quote] They really must be scared of California, Illinois, and Maryland following Texas' lead.

They’re not. If this is a game played out to its logical extent, and every state in the country were to go tit for tat on redistricting, the Republicans will benefit more than we do. Probably by a lot.

I agree that it’s a slippery slope

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2025 11:27 PM

R11 so Democrats should just let Texas gerrymander with no response? Get bent.

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2025 11:30 PM

But it will stop the Nazis, R9

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2025 11:47 PM

R12, if letting Texas gerrymander means that we don't lose 20 seats in a race to the bottom, then yes, let Texas do it.

You sound like a really uninformed idiot.

I find the narrative in CA difficult to communicate in order to get the votes. Newsom needs to explain why he wants to replace a good system with one that everybody, including Democrats, generally hates. He needs to explain that he tries to solve a federal problem in California that has been created in TX. Basically he needs to explain why he wants to burn their own home to save other peoples messes. That's difficult considering that voters are selfish and short-sighted.

Republicans have it easier: They just need to explain that Democrats act for purely political reasons, and everybody will understand that message right away.

by Anonymousreply 15August 22, 2025 1:25 AM

Yet, R15, the polls show a 22% lead.

The CA move is a response to the purely political redistricting of Texas, undertaken at the behest of the most unpopular president in history. Seems pretty easy to explain to me.

[Quote] Lots of Trumptards floating around the DL today.

Nah, just one ugly social retard with no place else to go.

by Anonymousreply 18August 22, 2025 1:40 AM

I don’t care what AI says. All the experts say there’s a lot more Democratic seats to pick up in blue states than there are Republican seats to pick up in red state. Red states were almost completely gerrymander out. There’s a lot of blue states that are not. Texas thinks voters in South Texas are going to vote like they did in 24. They’re taking a huge gamble. They may not even pick up 3 seats in TX. CA could eliminate ALL Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 19August 22, 2025 1:40 AM

R14 if you think Republicans will stop at Texas, you're a fucking moron. "ROLL OVER AND TAKE IT, DEMS" FUCK that noise. This is war.

Probably a covert, closet MAGA.

by Anonymousreply 20August 22, 2025 1:43 AM

R19 I hope CA eliminates EVERY LAST Republican. Human garbage. Like R14.

by Anonymousreply 21August 22, 2025 1:44 AM

For almost 20 years Republicans have been breaking the norms, the rules and even the laws. And Democrats keep standing back saying, Nope, we're not going to do that. We're playing by the rules, and as a result we got MAGA Christo-Facists destroying our democracy, and they still want to play nice.

by Anonymousreply 22August 22, 2025 1:51 AM

R22 Apparently that changed hence the thread.

by Anonymousreply 23August 22, 2025 1:54 AM

I'll vote for it since it will eliminate my awful Congressman and one of the neighboring ones, too.

by Anonymousreply 24August 22, 2025 3:46 PM

I suspect any ousted California republican congressman will be offered something in the Trump administration.

by Anonymousreply 25August 22, 2025 3:50 PM

This was not a surprise move by CA. Newsom and others talked about it while the TX legislature debated it. The TX legislature knew this could happen and went forward anyway. That is why I think any conversation about norms is inappropriate in this case. They pulled the trigger knowing the risk and they obviously assumed that blue states would chicken out. Time for TX to face the consequences.

by Anonymousreply 26August 22, 2025 4:00 PM

What would hurt Democrats is if the SC does away with requiring majority-minority districts (which vote Democratic). I read somewhere that there are 25 districts that Republicans could move to their side if they didn’t have to carve out those special districts.

by Anonymousreply 27August 22, 2025 4:12 PM

I used to be a "norms" guy, but I've learned that if no one else is playing by the rules, then why should the Democrats? Democratic states need to fight fire with fire.

by Anonymousreply 28August 22, 2025 4:17 PM

[quote] eliminate ALL Republicans

Sounds good to me!

by Anonymousreply 29August 22, 2025 4:20 PM

R27, true but not feasible in time for midterms. The Supreme Court clearly has decided to chop the Voting Rights Act away piece by piece.

by Anonymousreply 30August 22, 2025 4:21 PM

Democrats aren't scared. They see that the maga republicans are openly rigging the election. Newsom and the California Democrats are responding, by fighting fire with fire.

by Anonymousreply 31August 22, 2025 4:22 PM

The Republicans have declared a civil war. On universities and museums and art institutions. On federal employees and private businesses and foreign trade. On voters, on starving children. On sidewalks.

Get it yet? This is not policy, this is repression.

by Anonymousreply 32August 22, 2025 4:46 PM

It can't. It's a question of state law...and no protected class is involved. If it is not unconstitutional to disenfranchise people of color, it cannot be unconstitutional to disenfranchise rich white people.

by Anonymousreply 35August 22, 2025 6:03 PM

OP again. Second mailer in two days, and a different one, warning about "gerrymandering."

I live in a pretty mixed Dem/Rep city, at least for California. I doubt they're sending these to addresses in San Francisco.
