The pictures are sweet though they seem a bit over-sharey. It commendable the the parents have the kind of relationship that permits them to get together for their son like this. I think it's also commendable that he's going the dorm route, as opposed to the rich parents buying him a just-off campus condo (like Reese Witherspoon did for her son).
Naomi looks great, relaxed, makeup free and it looks like she hasn't had much if any facial work done. I thought full-faced Liev was one of those who'd get heavier with age, but he looks good, too.
I can't wait to see JLo hauling her first to college.

You have to remember this is DL, where so many posters had miserable relationships with their parents and were more often than not estranged from them eventually. And they've carried that baggage for the rest of their lives. Why do you think we have so many bitter, nasty misanthropes here?

They never visited you, in four years? They came several times. *My mom would make batches of her chili (secret ingredient: Kahlúa) and bring it to my fraternity brothers. My dad cried at my graduation —and told me how proud he was.*
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 22, 2025 1:46 PM |
R21 There were people who posted their mom turned their bedroom into a room for herself, as soon as they left for college, whose parents never visited them for four years, etc. That wasn't you.
But you made a point of saying (comparing to Naomi Watts and this situation) your mom drove you to college for six hours, dropped you off, said "have fun" then drove six hours back. I misunderstood, or I guess I don't know what you were trying to say.
These people came from New York (?) -- I don't know much about them, she had posted the son's high school graduation ceremony in New York (when I scrolled through her Instagram).
It's a bigger deal to drop off your kid far away from where you live, than closer. I would expect them to hang out. And they have the money.
I don't remember what my folks did when they took me to college (around 8-10 hours drive from home). They did visit several times. I feel bad if people's parents didn't take a lot of interest in them but I'd say that was unusual, as parents go.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 22, 2025 2:02 PM |
R55 - well, to me a 17 or 18 year old is still a child. It was potentially a staged photo to capture a moment as others have maintained above. Father still loosely holding his son's hand as he goes out into the world.
I still think it is touching and a moment they want to remember - and a better photo of just a crowded group shot in a dorm room.
Side note - isn't the area around USC still awful? I've been only once about 4 years ago and I was like - fucking no way would I go to school here. Really run down and didn't seem safe.
I went to Columbia - but at least it's on a hill, has gates, and it is NYC where subway is right there and people are out on the streets day and night. There? Run down and nobody walking around.
Considering it is a school of choice among SoCal elite - I don't understand it.

r56 I've known the touch of many men. You can't deny that many DLers come from horrid familial backgrounds and that played a big role in why they're so bitter and fucked up. Every third post in any thread that has to do with family has some kind of horror story.
[quote]To me it seems like an example of the infantalization of young adults. It would be cute and touching to me if he was a child.
This is normal father/son behavior. Again, many DLers would have no idea what that is.

R62 It must be generational, then, because I can't think of any dad I grew up around, or my dad--or any of the 18 year olds, I knew, or me, for that matter--walking down the street holding hands with each other.
[R55] - well, to me a 17 or 18 year old is still a child.
You can't be a child forever. An 18 year old is usually considered a young adult. Or was, up until recently, anyway.
Obviously there are degrees of childhood, it's not just one big childhood where you don't go through stages of behavior and changes as you become closer to becoming an adult.
I was affectionate with my father, we hugged, kissed on the cheek sometime. We just didn't walk down the street in public holding hands. If that's really unusual and you all held hands with your fathers, okay, fine.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | August 22, 2025 2:30 PM |
R65 - I think it's still not common, but more acceptable in this generation and I'm fine with that.
No way in hell would my dad have hold my hand at that age - and I wouldn't want it because I wouldn't want people to see it. (Although my dad was very affectionate - as was my mom)
But hopefully we've moved on from some of that bull.
I really wish I could have been more friends with my parents - but there was such a huge generation gap for so many of us, it just wasn't possible. They were from different worlds and how they grew up in the 50s and early 60s had zero applicability with the 80s and 90s.
