“When Cracker Barrel took away the last piece of nostalgia you had left,” Rachel Love captioned a TikTok.

“It was just heartbreak,” Love told the Wall Street Journal. “My 14-year-old son was devastated.”

"This comes after the chain announced in July that it would start phasing out its iconic antique decor in favor of a more modern look."

I guess they are trying to kill what's left of the business. That old country stuff with the little store was the only thing appealing about it left.

I went to CB a few times many years ago and then went to one again a few years ago. Quality had dropped tremendously and it's not like it was that good to begin with. Plus it has all that bad history with hiring and so forth.

Anyway, the new logo looks terrible and generic. Fitting, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 2August 21, 2025 10:16 AM

I cried and cried. That man and his barrel brought me hours of erotic pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2025 10:19 AM

There renovated one of the restaurants in my area- it looks good. Same vibe just freshened up. Can you imagine all the dust and grime on those nick knacks that have been hanging for 30’years?

Funnily, I am from a town near their corporate offices and knew a girl in HS (90s) who’s moms job was to scour the south to buy junk to hang at CB.

I think the breakfast food there is great still. That’s all I ever get.

Terrible service the last time i was in the restaurant. The manager and the company indeed heard about it, and not in an enjoyable way.

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2025 10:54 AM

MAGA is melting down over this. And I love it.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2025 12:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2025 1:00 PM

They should just follow the example of Dunkin' Donuts which changed its name to " Dunkin'." It could just be called " Cracker."

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2025 1:05 PM

They still have the best blueberry pancakes. Though I can live without all that Ye Olde General Store kitsch. And their other meals always looked overcooked.

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2025 1:13 PM

The pandemic changed everything. The 'old folks' who made up the large segment of their customer base never came back (they aged out, got used to life without Cracker Barrel or the rising prices kept them home). Now they are struggling to create a new customer base.

I must say, the few times I ate there, I looked forward to the food only to feel underwhelmed afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2025 1:57 PM

Damn usually it has to be a company getting rid of a racist mascot to make right-wingers go into autistic meltdown mode. I guess they feel their cornpone culture is being attacked?

I waited tables at multiple restaurants during my college years. I made more money at Cracker Barrel than any other restaurant. The one I worked at was near the airport and it was easy to burn and turn tables with people rushing to make flights. I would make on average $75-150 a night in tips for an average dinner shift. That was a lot back then.

"Tonight - it's your turn in the barrel."

[quote]Its an very old army joke. A new recruit to a remote outpost asks one of the garrison what they do for sex as all the locals are hostile. The old sweat tells him “for that we have the barrel”. The recruit is repulsed by the idea but after a few weeks he is feeling very frustrated and goes to the old soldier. He gets lead to a courtyard where there is a barrel standing in the middle the soldier tels him to put his member in the bung hole. The recruit is dubious thinking he might be being made fun of but does as he is told. He finds he is getting the most fabulous experience the best blowjob of his life. Spent he finally withdraws and asks the old soldier when he can use the barrel. “Any time you want except for every second Tuesday!” . Curious he asks why not the second Tuesdays “That’s your turn in the barrel!”.

It was the CEO's interview, in which she claimed that everyone loves the new logo and the restaurant redesign, that amped this up. The way she looks and talks and what she's doing fits the stereotype of how Middle America sees activist white women on the left. If she hadn't done the interview and kept out of the spotlight, the outrage would be simmering, but not so quickly to a boil. She probably wasn't a good fit for the brand.

Of course, the hothouse flower prisspots here wouldn't be caught dead in a Cracker Barrel. Not even on a road trip in the middle of nowhere. They'd drive 50 miles out of their way to get to a Whole Foods.

[quote] Cracker Barrel stock tanks after storm over logo change

(Reuters) – An ongoing attempt by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (CBRL) to revamp its brand triggered a backlash and unleashed a selloff that wiped out most of the dining chain's year-to-date stock price gains.

The restaurant company on Tuesday unveiled a new logo that dispenses with the image of a seated, overall-clad man leaning against a barrel in favor of one that simply displays the chain's name against a barrel-shaped yellow silhouette. That prompted conservatives including Donald Trump Jr. as well as posters on Reddit and other social media sites to criticize the move.

The stock rose 0.7% in premarket trading on Friday after falling as much as 13% by midday the day prior.

Cracker Barrel's stock regained some ground later in the trading session, rising from an intraday low of $50.27 to close at $54.80, 7% lower on the day. Nearly four million Cracker Barrel shares changed hands on Thursday, compared to a daily average of about a million shares.

"It's understandable that they would want to do something to refresh their image," said Steven Sosnick, market strategist at IBKR, who noted that, like many other casual dining chains, Cracker Barrel has struggled to regain customers and revenues since the pandemic. "But in today's social media-dominated world, when nothing can occur without being commented on, it obviously bothered some people who feel a sense of nostalgia."

In June, Cracker Barrel reported a 0.5% increase in revenues for the third quarter of its fiscal year, along with a 1% increase in comparable store sales.

Those irked by Cracker Barrel's logo change included Donald Trump Jr., who posted "WTF is wrong with @CrackerBarrel??!" on X on Wednesday. Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"This matters because tradition matters," opined Nate Morris, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky, also on X.

"Our values haven't changed, and the heart and soul of Cracker Barrel haven't changed," the company said in a statement provided to Reuters.

Market analysts said they think the selloff says more about the role that social media plays in today's financial markets than it does about Cracker Barrel itself.

"Momentum rules, and social media can create a heck of a lot of both positive and negative momentum," said Sosnick.

Others, though, wonder just why a storm of outrage is causing such a big decline in the share price.

"To claim that Cracker Barrel is going down in price because it changed its logo leads me to believe maybe people don't really know why the stock is going down," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

"People go there for the food. They don't go there for the logo."

by Anonymousreply 88August 23, 2025 2:49 PM

I have a great aunt who I like a lot. She is very special to me.

She recently turned 88 and our whole extended family— even the druggie cousins who are always on the outs— gathered to take her to Cracker Barrel.

My father’s idiot wife made a point to take a slew of photos to send to me as a “fuck you, you weren’t invited!” Mind you, she and my father never respond to texts or make any effort to stay in touch. So, her intent was clear. Plus, she’s been doing this shit for 40 years, so her game is a little stale.

But I live in California, which for this MAGAt crew was enough to earn me an unspecified hatred and ensure I wasn’t invited.

Anyway, I like Cracker Barrel well enough, but I thought “well, that’s certainly on the nose” when I saw where they had gathered.

I see that Cracker Barrel invited a group of TikTok influencers to a pop-up in NYC(!), of all places, to get them to create videos saying how great the food is. Being the usual influencers who receive something of value and then praise it, they dutifully complied.

It would be better to replace the CEO with a 60-year old who would recognize that the problem has been the food quality, not the image. I saw where someone compared Cracker Barrel to Domino's. When Domino's was doing so poorly, it didn't rebrand. They worked on fixing the food and that turned things around.

The problem is not the food quality. It's the place is dirty. It takes labor to keep it clean, keep puzzles on the table, and so on. If they don't hvae the labor, they have to move to a less clutttered aesthetic, plus I'm sure the store wasn't selling much of anything anymore.

by Anonymousreply 118August 24, 2025 2:53 PM

If they had made these changes gradually and quietly without any fanfare, most people probably wouldn't have noticed.

by Anonymousreply 126August 24, 2025 4:05 PM

The quality of the food isn't the problem...exactly. But the cooking is specifically cooked in an old-fashioned way, with the vegetables cooked until very soft. Most modern diners expect vegetables to be "tender-crisp". Their style of cooking is simply comfort food for many people, but it won't win any awards.

Nostalgia is something people confuse with history. Hence, all this pearl clutching by MAGAts. The problem with nostalgia as a business model is that either people get tired of it or the fans start dying out. This whole segment (old fashioned, Southern style food) seems to be dying. The old cafeteria chains, more recent chains like Po'Folks (mentioned upthread), and Cracker Barrel. Bob Evans, which has more varied demographic than Cracker Barrel also has had problems. The usual complaint at all these places is that the quality has gone down, still you'd expect someone to have capitalized on other chains' problems. Most likely, the whole segment is just in decline.

by Anonymousreply 133August 24, 2025 4:55 PM

I ate there once and the food was horrific. Keep in mind I am not a picky eater.

by Anonymousreply 134August 24, 2025 5:17 PM

Imagine the rage in evangelical land if Chik Fil-A were open on Sunday.

Cracker Barrel did a volte face on its antigay positions years ago. I guess the MAGATs missed it so this is their delayed "revvenge." Imagine being so fixated on the term Cracker as an IDENTITY that you embrace its insulting aspects of low intelligence and bigotry and demand these be displayed.

Many brands have simplified their logos so that they can also be used as smartphone app buttons. The old Cracker Barrel logo just wouldn't work as a smartphone app button; it was too complicated.

Daily Mail has an article about the CEO's interview about the change, and all the comments are trashing the woman as a woke liberal; some are trashing her for being a woman.

The older generation who loved this place is dying out, and they have to update their image to appeal to younger generations.

A few years ago (before Covid), research showed that Gen Z was all about experiences, including enjoying restaurant service. After Covid, Gen Z prefers to stay home on their phones and have DoorDash bring their food to them. So the decorations aren't going to make a big difference. The Sunday after-church crowd might miss them, but it's not like they're going to go to Pizza Hut instead.

by Anonymousreply 149August 24, 2025 10:43 PM

Cracker Barrell is tasteless unseasoned "country cooking" for old folks with diet restrictions to choke down. Their coffee isn't even good. I'm so tired of this story. The right is hysterically trying to divert from real news. And the left keeps falling for it. Ffs.

by Anonymousreply 150August 24, 2025 10:48 PM

Their sales were flat with declining profits in the years before COVID. I f they couldn't benefit from the decline of chains like Morrisons, they're never going to do well.

by Anonymousreply 151August 24, 2025 10:53 PM

Like above posters said, they're trying to change their image because their main customer base of old people is dying off and younger people aren't interested in Cracker Barrel.

by Anonymousreply 152August 24, 2025 11:14 PM

What really did them in was that disastrous interview with the CEO. This would have been a non-story had that snobbish cunt not gone on-air running her mouth treating their customer base with contempt. She will be gone by the end of September after she collects her multimillion dollar severance package.

In a DM story linked somewhere above, only a couple lines were dedicated to a quote from a Cracker Barrel employee who, IMO, pointed out the real problem with CB these days, which is the food absolutely sucks. He also said that they are required to store and re-serve leftover food.

I had the misfortune last week of being in a large party of 23 people who had an early dinner there. The plans were made weeks ago, before the current media outrage over ... something.

The location we went to looked like the old CB in every respect. The only items with the new logo were the bags containing our flatware. The food was beyond stale. My chicken fried steak was hard and dry and chunks of the breading had peeled off and were missing from the plate. My mashed potatoes, and another's hashbrown casserole, were gray, that gray color potatoes get when they're held over a very long time. Mine were dry and crumbly.

Another friend's salad had iceberg lettuce and absolutely not a shred of anything else in the bowl, the lettuce streaked with brown. The biscuits and cornbread were so stale that they couldn't be sliced with a knife - they disintegrated. Some guy started rapping his biscuit on the table, and it was like a hammer, and it did not break. Only one member of the party returned any food because we all wanted to get out of there.

The service was good, and to my surprise, nobody wanted to discuss the current CB scandal. Because it's a big nothing anyway. But serving day-old and older food? That will kill this chain. I know I won't go back for that reason alone.

by Anonymousreply 159August 25, 2025 12:36 AM

I'll say it again. The new logo is boring and generic. And the folksky cracker barrel country store inside the cracker barrels is one of the good things about it. This new approach will kill what's left of the brand. It's not being supportive of MAGA thinking to admit that. I'm calling it out because it's stupid, not because it's "woke".

And yes, the food quality has declined remarkably. That's where I would have focused first if I had wanted to save the company. But it's much more expensive to do that than to bring in a new logo and change a few menu items and say youre being new and fresh . This has the smell of the buffoons and vultures doing what they've done to so many American businesses.

When I lived in southern West Virginia, I frequently ate at the one Cracker Barrel. It wasn't half bad, although I discovered a lot of the food arrives frozen before it's served to customers.

Clearly, the new CEO is dumb as a brick if she didn't know how passionate CB's customer base is. Typically, Julie Masino couldn't have done any research to know that a "refresh" wouldn't be acceptable to her customer base, because that's what new CEOs do. They try to justify their ridiculous salaries by throwing out the old in favor of the new. It's like the whole New Coke debacle. I hope she loses her job.

When I lived in southern West Virginia, what's known locally as "The Coalfields," I ate at the local Cracker Barrel. The food wasn't half bad, although I learned much of the food arrives at the store frozen.

Typically, the new CEO, Julie Masino, tried to justify her ridiculous salary by jettisoning everything that made the typical store unique. Proving she knew nothing about what makes CB unique among the average casual dining offering.

Sure, it's old-fashioned. Ande, yes, it appeals largely to the grandma demographic. But I observed on my frequent visits, that CB also is a favorite with families. It looked to me that every seating was like a family reunion. And no one was complaining about the logo or the decor.

I hope Masino loses her job.

It's because this pile-of-shit website doesn't allow edits. I'm kicking around the idea of trying to get Stripe to threaten that they will suspend his merchant account if he doesn't get certain issues fixed. (They are major merchant agreement violations) Too busy right now, though.
