Dolores Claiborne (1995), an underrated, most quoteable cult classic

Sometimes you have to be a high-riding BITCH to survive!

Six pins, Dolores! Not five. Six.

“Sometimes being a bitch is all a woman’s got to hold on to.”

Has he fucked her?!

My favorite Stephen King film adaptation. Another great performance by Kathy Bates. People who have not read the novel are not aware that it is a "first person" format, told in a monologue by the main character.

Another "first person" novel turned into a movie is "Addie Pray", which became the movie Paper Moon. Since only a little over half of the novel was used, they could have done a sequel. Too late now, Ryan O'Neal dead and Tatum a few years shy of collecting Social Security.

Kathy Bates and Judy Parfitt should've won Oscars. They weren't even nominated.

by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2025 12:23 AM

I remember thinking Jennifer Jason Leigh gave one of the worst performances in a studio film I'd seen in years. She was so bad it ruined a lot of what was working.

R5, Kathy Bates and Judy Parfitt >>>>>>>>> Susan Sarandon and whomever won that Best Supporting Actress award that year

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2025 12:26 AM

Saw this 1 years after it was released. It's a favorite. I've been obsessed with Judy Parfitt since then.

"GET RID OF THIS DISGUST-TING SOFA!"

"I'll have my eclipse"

"men die, and leave wives their money!"

R7 Mira Sorvino

I want my China pig!!!

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2025 12:33 AM

"Sometimes an accident can be an unhappy woman's best friend." I'm surprised that I remember that line.

A thankless role for David Strathaim but someone had to play the character.

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2025 12:35 AM

Dolores gets all the attention. We worked for that batch as well and are always overlooked.

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2025 12:36 AM

R6 I didn't like her in the film, either. I did think she was rather good in Single White Female, however.

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2025 12:39 AM

R6, I didn't think she was that bad?

I will always remember the scene where she looks straight into a bathroom mirror and sees the back of her head.

JJL is the reason I avoided this for years. She is good in Miami Blues, though the accent wavers, but most of her films are a pass for me.

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2025 12:43 AM

R9, Mira was much more memorable in Romy and Michelle.

Just packin’ up the speedboat so’s I can make my big escape!

Sorry, are ya? I bet you haven’t been sorry since you needed to use the pay toilet and the string on your pet dime broke!

Vera? The way she got? It’s a wonder I didn’t say it every hour. You go ahead and scribble that down in your pad there, Mister Mackey. Just so long as you write that sayin’ a thing and doin’ it are two different things. But then your wife probably already told you that!

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2025 12:50 AM

R17 That's a fun movie.

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2025 1:09 AM

I agree OP. It was way underrated.

by Anonymousreply 20August 21, 2025 1:22 AM

"Sorry, Delores. All my money is tied up in cash."

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2025 1:33 AM

Still have nightmares about that abandoned hole and poor David Strathairn he was so cute.

by Anonymousreply 22August 21, 2025 2:02 AM

It was just a movie.

by Anonymousreply 23August 21, 2025 2:03 AM

Judy Parfitt was robbed!

by Anonymousreply 24August 21, 2025 6:05 AM

Saw it when it came out. Thought it was a great story, but that Kathy overdid her Maine accent (I'm from the West Coast) which seemed distracting. I saw it again just last week, after having spent a lot of time in New England and Maine in particular. Kathy is spot on. The rest of the cast (the educated daughter who ends up in NYC excepted) have the accent down as well. It's just that Kathy's character is louder and more in peril than the others. The film still holds up. It is disturbing, despite the somewhat satisfying ending.

Will be traveling back to Maine in October to see in-laws when it's at its creepiest.

Not the most challenging role for Christopher Plummer. I almost forget that he is in this film sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 26August 21, 2025 7:16 AM

An accident, Dolores, can be an unhappy woman's best friend!
