“I Am the Cheese” Robert Cormier
Inspired by the “Short Stories” thread, which books/plays left an impression on you?
In 7th grade, I am the Cheese was required reading. It was a complex, totally eye-opening book to me at the time. It’s not talked about much. Has anyone read it?
A Wrinkle in Time
Some high school favorites were
Orwell 1984
Kafka The Metamorphosis
Tolstoy The Death of Ivan Illyich
Hamlet

I meant to add — which books made first affected you as a kid/teenager. From my parents’ bookshelf:
Jaws
The Other Side of Midnight
Helter Skelter

Harriet the Spy was our Bible. The Narnia books, then Lloyd Alexander, turning to Tolkien in junior high.
The Outsiders was everything in 5th grade.
The Diary of Anne Frank and then (ugh!) Go Ask Alice.
