The new book Desi Arnaz by Todd S Purdum is sensational

If you're looking for some fun reading (or a great audio book) I highly recommend it. The audio book read by the author is well voiced and will keep you listening.

Does anyone care about Desi anymore?

by Anonymousreply 1August 20, 2025 12:32 AM

R1 - fuck you

[quote]Does anyone care about Desi anymore?

I forgot about him right after I swallowed.

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2025 12:38 AM

It's spelled TrumBULL.

by Anonymousreply 4August 20, 2025 12:40 AM

OP, give a link to something about the book. It'll help get responses on the thread. People can't comment on a book they know nothing about.

by Anonymousreply 5August 20, 2025 12:43 AM

Or a TV star they've forgotten...

by Anonymousreply 6August 20, 2025 12:50 AM

Desi was a significant figure in mid-20th century American culture, as a singer, bandleader, and percussionist who popularized Afro-Cuban music in the US and a highly successful and innovative TV producer as well as star of stage and screen. So yeah, a new biography is called for.

by Anonymousreply 7August 20, 2025 12:57 AM

Oh, OP, we must always include a reference link of some sort in posts such as this.

by Anonymousreply 8August 20, 2025 1:00 AM

R6 Pretty sure posters on DL haven't forgotten Desi.

by Anonymousreply 9August 20, 2025 1:05 AM

I’m pretty sure the book was endorced by Lucie so any mention of him getting oral sex by Caesar Romero is probably zilch

by Anonymousreply 10August 20, 2025 1:20 AM

The plot thickens...

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Aug. 26— Arthur Farnsworth, 35, aircraft expert and husband of Bette Davis, had apparently been suffering for two weeks from a serious head injury which finally caused him to become dizzy, collapse and fracture his skull, the coroner's office reported today. Following an autopsy, Dr. Homer Keyes, assistant county autopsy surgeon, found that Mr. Farnsworth, who died yesterday, succumbed to a cranial hemorrhage in the right mastoid region. Prior to the fatal accident, suffered Monday when he fell backward to the sidewalk, he possibly had sustained another injury in the same area, Dr. Keyes reported to Coroner Frank Nance. “This may have been from several days to as long as two weeks,” Dr. Keyes stated after an examination of the skull. "The blood was black and coagulated. Had it been recent, or from the current injury, it would have been purple or lighter."

Dr. Keyes stated further that, there was no evidence of a heart seizure or stroke.

With this evidence before him, District Attorney Fred N. Howser ordered an investigation to determine whether Mr. Farnsworth might earlier have been a victim of a beating. "This investigation is only routine, however," Mr. Howser said.

(Wrong thread.)

by Anonymousreply 14August 20, 2025 1:29 AM

Another book about Desi? I've had sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 15August 20, 2025 1:38 AM

OP does it include the scene where Frank Sinatra confronts Desi about the Italian stereotypes in The Untouchables?

Desi went on the offensive. "Hey dago! I remember a coupla years ago when jew couldn't get a yob!"

by Anonymousreply 16August 20, 2025 1:39 AM

r,16, hey! Rico was Italian!

It seemed like every week they were up against Frank Nitti though.

by Anonymousreply 17August 20, 2025 1:41 AM

Lucy and those who knew him called him "Dessy", but the public only seems to call him "Dezzy", have you noticed that?

by Anonymousreply 18August 20, 2025 3:00 AM

I would much rather read a book about Ozzie and Harriett. Does anyone under 60 remember them anymore? their show was fun

by Anonymousreply 19August 20, 2025 3:22 AM

Anything about his dick?

by Anonymousreply 20August 20, 2025 3:33 AM

The only book you need. Every scandal is in it. It’s two humongous volumes.

A Book is being re-released and updated next year. A new cover too.

I've always enjoyed Todd Purdum in Vanity Fair across the years. You might remember him from his piece "The Comeback Id" when Bill Clinton was making a lot of costly mistakes during Hillary's campaign. Clinton loathes him.

1-What is startling about ILL was that it was a mixed-race sitcom. In 1951 this was unheard of. CBS was antsy about it.

2-There is a trace of racism in ILL. It came right of Desi's mouth. I think it was the ep where they are returning from Hollywood via train. A black porter (a rare African American sighting in ILL's history) is carrying luggage. Ricky says "put that down there, boy." Okay, it was the 1950s and that was how they talked back then. However I would expect more of someone whose first job in the U.S. was cleaning out bird cages and knew discrimination firsthand.

3-I will no longer endorse anything. Rep 10 has spoken and she is the one who must be obeyed. It's endorce and that's the law.

by Anonymousreply 29August 20, 2025 7:21 AM

So, books should only be written about very current things?

People who believe that are probably young(er) and also quite stupid.

by Anonymousreply 30August 20, 2025 8:03 AM

[quote]I would much rather read a book about Ozzie and Harriett. Does anyone under 60 remember them anymore? their show was fun

HARRIET, not Harriett.

by Anonymousreply 31August 20, 2025 2:31 PM

[quote]Lucy and those who knew him called him "Dessy", but the public only seems to call him "Dezzy", have you noticed that?

It's short for "Desiderio," and should be pronounced (in Spanish) with the 's' sound, not the 'z' sound.

by Anonymousreply 32August 20, 2025 2:33 PM

Lucy and Desi weren’t mixed race. Latinos and whites were paired in dozens of films/shows
