How will you protest?
Riot? March in the streets? grimace?

I don't know.
However, I hope we won't just say "that sucks" and move on with our lives. Reactions will be dependent on the area and the acceptance of gays in the area.

I always used to say to my (college) students when the topic came up (American Government, Civil Rights section), "I can't even find someone I want to date, much less marry!"
It was always good for a laugh, but it was true.

Supreme Court is stacked with conservative's aiming to please the religious right. If SCOTUS decides to hear the case, we may be fucked. And there won't be a damn thing we can do about it.

Hillary certainly thinks so:
Hillary Clinton believes the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn marriage equality, and she's urging LGBTQ+ couples to get married while they still can.
"American voters, and to some extent the American media, don't understand how many years the Republicans have been working in order to get us to this point," Clinton said. "It took 50 years to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court will hear a case about gay marriage. My prediction is they will do to gay marriage what they did to abortion. They will send it back to the states."

I agree with Clinton. If they take the case then it will be to overturn gay marriage.

Bareback gangbang on the Supreme Court steps!

Gay marriage only ends in tears and in divorce.

I'm as equally concerned with how the Roberts Court will protect the lives and rights of the infant children of gay married couples.
Protect your families, gay parents.

It wont
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 20, 2025 5:21 PM |
They can’t do that. What they can do is leave it up to the states but the states that allow it will allow outsider gays to marry there and the states that don’t allow it will have to recognize it under federal law. This is why it was codified by Congress and signed into law.

They can’t overturn it. They can leave it up to the states like abortion. There will still be gay marriage. Gays will marry in states that allow it and the states that don’t allow it will still have to recognize it under federal law. It was codified. The Supreme Court can’t touch that one but they can chip away at it.

I will get married again, this time in Spain. My marriage in the U.S. is recognized and registered here, and that status is secure regardless of changes across the Atlantic. All the same I would do it again, to have done it in a sane place, and not to feel a hint of the U.S. having deprived me of marriage and placed me in some almost-as-good-legally-equivalent status.

Yes, SCOTUS can leave to states and the chip away by (as the right has already signaled its strategy) claiming there is no right for gay marriage to be treated the same way with regards to legal benefits as straight marriage. States will also criminalize performing gay marriages, so, like abortion, if you perform a gay marriage in an accepting state, the hateful state will indict you and try to get you extradited. Mailing supportive of gay marriage will be banned by the post office

That could easily be uncodified, which is the problem with trying to codify abortion rights as well. The next Congress can just vote the opposites. Getting 60 votes in the Senate may be tough but certainly not impossible if you have a veto proof majority

There should be a lot of protesting before it ever gets to that point. Protest en masse if they decide to take up the case. Breathe a sigh of relief if they don't.

"This is why it was codified by Congress and signed into law."
The Supreme Court can strike down that law as it can any federal law. It would be a separate case and take a few more years, but it's absolutely a possibility.
I don't think they are going to overturn Obergefell, but we should not act like same-sex marriage is necessarily safe if they do. There is a non-zero chance this rather activist Court won't stop there. The codification gave an extra layer of protection, but not a bullet proof one.
If same-sex marriage were protected explicitly via constitutional amendment, then the Court truly couldn't touch it.
No need to panic over that possibility, but it is a reason for everyone, even in blue states, to protest like hell if they decide to take up a case to reconsider Obergefell. The justices need to know the feelings of the public so that they don't even start down that road.

Who do they think they are fucking with? The first Saturday in June after they pull this mess, it's on queens. Who do they think have been making these straight weddings HAPPEN? Cater waiters accidentally spilling hot food on wedding guests, red wine on bridal gowns, also clumsy flattening irons (hold it down, psssss), and some poison ivy tucked into those bouquets . . . they don't want none of this!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 20, 2025 11:39 PM |
It's delusional when people think the Supreme Court won't destroy anything that rethugs/Trump wants it to. "But wait, they can't do this, it's the law!"
Oh, to live in that fantasyland. Trump destroys all, and now his rethug minions get by with whatever evil they want.

If that happens, we need to start holding transgender and nonbinary people accountable. We can start by kicking them out of our community, which they stole from us. And then we need a very public divorce from them so we can start rebuilding our reputation.
