Michael Phillips was also very well regarded, if lacking the stature of Siskel, who with the Chicago Sun-Times’s Roger Ebert could make or break a movie with the “Thumbs Up/Down” rating system.

The Philadelphia Inquirer hasn't had a film critic, TV critic, or a theater/classical music critic for years.
It still has the affable yet fair Craig LaBan as a restaurant, and for whatever reason, the hoary Dan DeLuca as rock/pop music critic.

Good film critics are a dime a dozen and are now a dying breed. I never understood Gene Siskel's success and I imagine he would have gone nowhere without the more knowledgeable Roger Ebert.
