The One Appliance You Cannot Live Without
My dishwasher stopped working about 6 months ago. I tried to just live with for a while as I’ve been too busy to deal with purchasing one and having it installed. That was a mistake.
It takes me forever to wash dishes, especially flatware, and I’ve found I cannot keep up a regular routine where it doesn’t become overwhelming.
I’ve lived without a washer and dryer but I cannot live without a dishwasher. So what is the one appliance you’ve found you cannot live without?

How the hell am I supposed to live without a refrigerator? Where will I put my seal flipper pies?

No one can live without a fridge, while you could easily wash the dishes after yourself, OP. I assume you live alone.
Fucking lazy-ass people.

They live perfectly fine without refrigerators in some societies.

In some parts of the country, from May thru September an air conditioner would rank 2nd, right behind refrigerator. I can wash my own dishes but I cannot cool down at night without AC if the outdoor temps are cycling between 100 high / 82 low.

In order of vital importance:
Range/Stove/Oven
Refrigerator
Dishwasher
Washer/Dryer
Toaster
The one I had ilu live without: a toaster.
I could easily buy fresh things daily for preparation and consumption that day; but it would be a pain in the ass not having cold drinks or ice, or having to toss out 2/3 a container of milk because no storage.
Though laundry could be dropped off somewhere (or collected and returned, for that matter), but the top four are essential.
I don't like lots of electronic gadgets
And a dishwasher is a simple necessity. I live with my partner and do a 15 dishwashing everyday, everything but too big or too difficult to clean pots and pans goes in and saves me from washing dishes multiple times a day, even if it's 5 minutes each time, not washing them by hand is a necessary luxury in the long term.

R3, No, I do not live alone and have to wash dishes for elderly family members as well.

I lived without a dishwasher for 30 years - I've had one in various places the last 8 years. I use it once every 10 days to just sanitize my dishes.
I live alone and don't cook much though.
As far as non-standard appliances (refrig, stove is like a toilet - it's everywhere) - I can't live without my microwave or air fryer. Those are the 2 most heavily used appliances I own.

I had my gas stove disconnected five years ago and I don't miss it. I had a gas leak in the stove and it scared the shit out of me . I use an air fryer, electric griddle and microwave.

Next, OP will ask us which one we could live without: blood, oxygen, a colon…

I would fucking die without my dishwasher. The only thing I wash by hand are pots and pans.

I’ve lived without all of these things (lived on a boat) but no fridge for milk and yogurt, can not do now.
Can’t live without a washer now that I’ve had one in my apt these last seven years. It is such a luxury. No dryer though, haven’t used one in decades.

R17 - I agree - I lived in big cities where most apts were not built with in-unit washer and dryers. Usually a shared laundry room or even worse, you had to take your clothes to the Laundromat.
I've had in-unit washer/dryer for 8 years now and it's so convenient. Many people take it for granted - but it's not common in pre-war buildings. It's extremely rare unless a major renovation has been done of the entire building.

In our building any w/d addition requires wet over wet. That means you have to redesign around your kitchen or bath for the correct pipe access.
I don’t mind the basement laundry room at all. It’s usually me and a few maids or housekeepers, or an older lady. Easy to deal with.

People who have a washer/dryer in your place- how is the elecricity/gas/water bill for those appliances? I live in an apartment building with shared laundry units, and I imagine the bill must be pretty high.

R19 - agreed - it's not simple at all to convert apts or W/D. I didn't mind a laundry room in an elevator building - although sometimes it was always full, like Sat mornings or other times.
But if you lived in a 3 or 4 flat and it's (usually) in the basement with stairs (sometimes exterior outside stairs to the basement). schlepping a load of laundry down 4 flights of stairs in the winter is fucking not fun. And then upstairs again - hope it's not raining or snowing!
