The average person can do most jobs without the bullshit of gatekeeping degrees
On the job training is better than a college degree. Just weeks/months of (supervised) training won’t turn you into a doctor or an airplane pilot, but the majority of roles can be learned quickly by a person of average intelligence.
You shouldn't need a years-long degree for nursing or teaching.

Nursing is one profession that I would have thought required formal training. Many other jobs, no.

Yes, but this is America. Average intelligence is an increasingly rare commodity.

I'm a librarian, and I could have had this job sewn up with about a few weeks' worth of training from other staff members. First of all, you have to enjoy working with and for the public -- which no degree will ever accomplish if it's not your cup of tea. Secondly, you just need to learn where everything is, and master some policies.
That said, anyone in the health or law fields should be degreed and tested.

a teacher does NOT need a teaching diploma but does need higher education. Teaching is not babysitting.
