What does DL think of Peggy Scott from the Gilded Age?

Real name Denée Benton. She’s quite striking, is she not?

Uh oh…

by Anonymousreply 1August 17, 2025 12:41 AM

She is beautiful.

I like Denée Benton very much as an actress, and she does about as much with Peggy as she could. But Benton does not have much to work with.

The biggest problem with this show is that both Peggy and Marion are such central characters and yet they are impossibly idealized. They never wish anyone ill; they never get angry. They just get sad that the men they love are not as heroic as they are. And they spend the rest of the time living their heroic lives and wishing everyone well and cheering everyone on.

R3 I think that’s the point. At that time and in that social class, “proper“ ladies were not allowed to be angry. It’s not that they didn’t feel anger, it’s just that they forced it down.

by Anonymousreply 4August 17, 2025 12:46 AM

Agnes, Ada, Mrs. Astor, and Mrs. Fish all have demonstrated anger several times on the show. They are all proper ladies.

She’s no Celia Rose Gooding from ‘Queer New Worlds’ .

She is beautiful, a terrific actress and has a lovely voice. "10s" across the board.

by Anonymousreply 7August 17, 2025 1:21 AM

'Quite striking' is really pushing it. Attractive and talented ? Yes.

Yes, Constance, it's all quite subjective but it's not a competition. Please behave.

Short and squat, an unfortunate figure but I like her. She can sing too, played the princess in the Encores! version of “Into the Woods” a few seasons ago.

R9 It's called an opinion.

And she landed the hottest guy on the show.

Morgan Spector?

Loves anal.

by Anonymousreply 14August 17, 2025 3:12 AM

No, R13. Dr. Kirkland.

by Anonymousreply 15August 17, 2025 3:13 AM

Really like her. She’s made Peggy a heroine worth rooting for. The season finale scene with the hot doctor proposing to Peggy was well done, swoon-worthy. Great soapy stuff. She also has great chemistry with the other actors.

by Anonymousreply 16August 17, 2025 3:19 AM

Wait! I’m only on Season 2 and her storyline is still soooo boring… “I’m off to Alabama!” zzzzzzzz

She’s fantastic, though.

by Anonymousreply 17August 17, 2025 3:24 AM

She's charming

That is the most gorgeously-shot sequence of the entire series.

What's her skin color?

by Anonymousreply 21August 17, 2025 4:12 AM

Enough about Peggy Scott. What does DL think of Peggy Sue, who actually got married ?

Mocha chocolata, ya ya, creole lady marmalade.

I noticed when she's playing Peggy, she speaks clearly yet when she's being interviewed, she goes into that horrible vocal fry. WHY??? If she knows enough to speak with a certain intonation for the role, why wouldn't she (and other actresses) speak like that normally? Vocal fry seems to take conscious effort and it's annoying as hell,

by Anonymousreply 24August 17, 2025 4:53 AM

She the loveliest actress on the show & period costumes always look so striking on her. But the character is a plaster saint and while not as dull as Marian (the quickie marriage/baby/adoption makes her character even more tragic) and others noted, she has no complexity or wit to her. I think the writers honestly have no idea what to do with her.

by Anonymousreply 25August 17, 2025 9:28 AM

I think she’s so fat and not pretty at all. I don’t understand why she was cast in this role and then paired with these gorgeous black men. There are lots of beautiful black actresses that could play her role. I hope she gets recast.

by Anonymousreply 26August 17, 2025 10:38 AM

She was great in both productions I have seen her on Broadway: "Comet" and "Into the Woods." Peggy, given her backstory, could have been given more dramatic scenes worth of her talent.

Denee Benton is beautiful. But if she were beautiful in the way I think you mean she'd be a distraction. None of the female actors on the show are more than what would have been referred to as "handsome" during the actual Gilded Age.

by Anonymousreply 28August 17, 2025 1:07 PM

Everyone is attractive, I think the woman who plays the Astor daughter is beautiful. Although the doctor is a total snack.

by Anonymousreply 29August 17, 2025 1:57 PM

Thanks!
