I Miss Magic

When I was younger, there would be little moments of “magic” in my life.

Or maybe everyday things just seemed more magical.

I used to live in building built around a secured courtyard. No way in or out of the courtyard without a key.

On a really snowy day, a little orange tabby cat appeared in the courtyard. I started spending time with him for several months. I had loved cats as a child, then completely forgot about it.

Spending time with “Nico” set in motion a whole chain of events in my life.

We as a society live differently now— more isolated. Maybe there’s less opportunity for magic.

What do you think? Tell us about magic in your life!

It's not society, the world just seems more enchanted when you're growing up because your developing brain is tickled by all the sensory overload, plus the greater neuroplasticity means you can conjure up whole worlds inside your mind and project the numinous onto objects, events, places, people... Hence all the nostalgia and everyone pining after the good old times, myself included.

Some say you need to re-enchant your life from within when you grow up, but I have no idea how to go about doing that without falling into religion and similar superstitious nonsense like apophenia.

The experience you had with your tabby has more to do with joy and play and simplicity that animals can show us, and that's easier to recreate as an adult. Though I suppose you could say that all those elements coming together IS magic.

Where's the magic, OP?

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2025 6:22 PM

OP, you MUST believe in magic!

I miss them, too. I liked that song, Rude.

The only magic I remember is this kind...

Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart?

How the music can free her, whenever it starts

And it's magic, if the music is groovy

It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie

I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock and roll

Little Magic is so talented.

Does anyone remember the televised seance to contact Harry Houdini in the 80s?

Abracadabra, I sit on his knee

Presto chango, and now he is me

Hocus Pocus, we take her to bed

Magic is fun; we're dead

On TikTok, someone posted a video of their small studio apt in NYC.

It had large windows with a great view. Was decorated so cute and looked so cozy.

It looked magical to me

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful.

A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical

And all the birds in the trees, they’d be singing so happily,

Oh, joyfully, oh, playfully watching me

But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible

Logical, oh, responsible, practical

And then they showed me a world where I could be so dependable

Oh, clinical, oh, intellectual, cynical

Depends on where and how you live. I moved to another country and there's magic to witness everyday, for years now.

I understand what you mean. I really do believe it was smartphones that killed the "magic". I noticed that the world feels completely different before and after them. There is no room for magic because we are connected/online virtually non-stop.

I ask you, how is it possible to look like this at sixty-six? It's magic. "Magic" by Solange.

Come take my hand

You should know me

I've always been in your mind

You know I will be kind

I'll be guiding you

Building your dream has to start now

There's no other road to take

You won't make a mistake

I'll be guiding you
