Another blow to 'Target' : 'Ulta Beauty' is pulling out of Target locations

Tired of WINNING yet ? Ulta Beauty is.

After signing a notable five year partnership in early 2021, beauty retailer 'Ulta Beauty' announced on Friday they will not be renewing their partnership with 'Target Department Stores' when their current contract expires in August, 2026. In the past five years, Ulta Beauty has opened 600 locations in Target stores across the country (about 1/3 of Target's total locations) as well as on the Target website.

Ulta Beauty at Target shops carried a smaller and rotating assortment of the merchandise at the beauty retailer’s own stores. They were staffed by Target’s employees.

The loss of the popular beauty retailer’s products could be another blow to Target as it tries to woo back both shoppers and investors. Target’s annual sales have been roughly flat for four years and it expects sales to decline this fiscal year. Shares of the company are worth less than half of what the were back in 2021, when they hit an all-time closing high of $266.39. It also has faced backlash over both its Pride collection and its rollback of key diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Store traffic for Target has declined year over year nearly every week from the week of Jan. 27, days after the company’s DEI announcement, through the week of Aug. 4, according to Placer.ai, an analytics firm that uses anonymized data from mobile devices to estimate overall visits to locations. Target traffic had been up weekly year over year in the four weeks before Jan. 27.

Maybe with the extra space the can stop putting racks of shit in the main aisles.

In 20 years, business schools will use Target to show how a business destroyed itself by having no understanding of who their customers are whatsoever.

In the meantime, Target competitor Kohl's has completed its expansion of 100 new Sephora locations across 39 states this year. There are now 1100 'Sephora at Kohl's' beauty stores. These Sephora at Kohl’s shops will offer Kohl’s customers a simplified shopping experience with the most prestigious names in makeup, skincare, hair, and fragrance displayed together by category for easy navigation and product discovery. Shoppers can find the top names in beauty in this carefully curated smaller format.

I occasionally drop into my local target. It’s so empty. Gone are the quirky items you used to be surprised to find if you had time to browse.

I believe ULTA is known for supporting diversity. I’m sure that had something to do with the separation between them.

"Maybe with the extra space the can stop putting racks of shit in the main aisles."

Why are they putting racks of shit in the main aisle? I was in a Target store about a month ago and there were plenty of empty or mostly empty shelves throughout the store to put shit.

You just answered my question; I asked the BF' 24-year daughter Lili about where she shops for make-up. She loves Sephora, uses it all the time. She told me she doesn't know what happened to them, but Target sucks& Ultra Beauty make-up changed and not for the better.

This isn't a surprise, which is why neither stocked move much in response to the announcement. One of the biggest reasons for its failure was it never made much sense to start with, unlike the Kohl's/Sephora partnership, because you'll often find an Ulta and a Target in the same shopping center.

I can see why. Every item I wanted that I can usually get at an actual Ulta store was not carried by the Ulta in Target. I just wanted some fucking eye cream.

Personally, I think it's been the steady decline of foot-traffic in Targets across the country. It's no secret they are having the worst year in their history as far as foot traffic in their stores. They can't make money with no one in their stores.

In the suburban outdoor shopping center near me, there was a free-standing Ulta store on one end, a free-standing Sephora on the other. Across the parking lot was a Kohl's and Target. The Sephora closed their store once they partnered with Kohl's (and the signage outside of Kohl's is shared with Sephora). Ulta has kept it's location open the past few years, as though they knew they were going to need it in the future.

Even though I personally hate it, I'm sure there's a reason other than the need for space for more product. I see it at a lot of stores, not just Target. I'm sure it's the result of a lot of hours spent by marketing and display teams. It slows down the flow of the aisle and maybe people will stop and glance at the product and actually buy it. It's flexible - allows special placement for special or seasonal items or something they don't want on the regular shelves and are trying to get rid of. I'm sure there's other reasons as well.

by Anonymousreply 10August 16, 2025 6:38 PM

Only items I've ever needed from Ulta or Sephora is Kiehls skincare and I don't want to be hounded by sales associates. Let me pick up what I want off the shelf and be on my way. If you hound me, I'll order it online.

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2025 6:45 PM

R10 You're right - a lot of stores overcrowd the aisles to 'slow down' customers who rush through the store, in hopes something will grab their attention and they will buy it. Christmas time at Macy's is the worst - I always wonder how the fire department and the dept which represents those with disabilities allow the stores to do this. It's a danger in many situations.

This is why I loved Nordstrom when they were in my area - they kept the aisles clean and spacious like 'the old department stores'. Unfortunately, they closed.

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2025 6:59 PM

I see they're changing the look of their stores. I stopped in one by my house for some paper towels last week and the store was half torn up. The new signage looks cheap. The new carts are way too big and clunky. Target has really lost its way. It's sad actually. Looks like they're taking out the quick service food/drink area. At least at the one I was at.

by Anonymousreply 13August 16, 2025 7:07 PM

Target lacks a wide variety of items, and less selection of the stuff I would normally have in the house. And they're generally more expensive than Walmart. I used to love Target but it's not a place I really go to anymore.

by Anonymousreply 14August 16, 2025 7:28 PM

I recently went to Target & it was well-stocked, but as noted, the quirky things that used to make Target unlike Walmart are gone. So now they're basically Walmart 2.0, but as noted, their prices aren't as good & they've been slower to embrace self-checkout. It takes forever to get in & out of the store.

by Anonymousreply 15August 17, 2025 9:47 AM

The Ultra in Target zones are dismal cut-rate experiences. Grubby, broken, testers, lots out of stock. No knowledge base. Really cruddy.

by Anonymousreply 16August 17, 2025 10:18 AM

There used to be a mystique around Target, despite it being K-Mart with better branding and a few clever items.

A few years ago a painfully self-unaware brownstone-Brooklyn woman made a YouTube video, incredulous that the workers did not know what a “duvet” was.

The current CEO retires soon. Most likely they replace him with an external candidate. If you want the job, propose your vision now, right here. Mind you though whatever 🌈 dream you have for Tarjay, the stores still need to make money.

Their disastrous entry into, and withdrawal from the Canadian market laid bare the incompetence of its executives and foreshadowed the situation Target finds itself in today.

As a black gay man, target can continue to kiss my ass goodbye. Thank god my family still refuses to shop there. What’s sucks is that I’m Chicago and really good Target is in walking by distance from my house. I don’t have (or need) a car so I’ve spent a lot of money in there over the years.

I’d rather go without. Fuck them!

by Anonymousreply 20August 17, 2025 2:37 PM

I think generally Target still looks better and is a more pleasant environment, than Wal-mart - often considerably so. But, the retail products aren't any better. I do "know" Target's store brands better. I've never liked Wal-mart and I still don't. But now I'm starting to not like Target. And, in regard to looking better, there are more and more rundown Targets. I still see more that are in good shape than bad, but the number of cruddy ones has increased.
