Actress Adrienne Barbeau, best known as Bea Arthur's daughter Carol in the 70s sitcom 'Maude' was at Galaxycon Raleigh this summer, looking fantastic at 80 (she turned 80 on June 11).

I remember 10 years ago when she was in the 2015 PIPPIN revival tour, she said in an interview she had quite an exercise routine to keep in shape so she could do all the singing /acting on the trapeze each night for the show. I remember she said she was performing 20 feet above the audience with no net below - so she needed her core strength to do the role.

Yes, every celebrity is either "iconic" or "criminally underrated." In all fairness, Adrienne's boobs probably WERE iconic.
She looks great!

Who's the frumpy woman sitting next to her in the blue tee shirt in the video ? Is she supposed to be important ?

For 20 years, I've wished Y&R would can Jess Walton and hire Barbeau to play Jill Foster Abbott.

As I had said before, Norman Lear used to scour the Broadway musical comedies, and pick out who he thought he could turn into a television star (Jean Stapleton, Sherman Hemsley, Michael Evans, Bonnie Franklin, etc.) and Barbeau was one of those finds. He found her on B'way playing 'Rizzo' and knew he found the girl to play Maude's daughter, Carol, when the show went to series in 1972. In the AITF episode where we are first introduced to 'Carol' at her engagement party, she was played by another popular actress at the time. But Lear didn't think she could carry a whole weekly series as a supporting actress to Arthur. He met Barbeau backstage towards the end of her run, and made her an offer.
Barbeau said she took an instant liking to Lear, and thought the concept for the program (especially for the new decade) was timely. The only problem was, she hadn't watched a television show in 'years' since the apartment she was renting as a 'struggling theater actress' had no television. She hadn't heard of AITF, and was familiar with Bea Arthur by name on B'way, but never met her and never saw her few episodes on AITF, and didn't know anything about her Maude character. She told one of her friends from 'Grease' about the offer Lear made her, and her friend told her she had to take it. She told her AITF was the biggest hit show on TV, and Maude was sure to be a huge hit. She convinced her if it didn't work out in LA, she could always resume her career in musicals on B'way. So Barbeau called Lear back a few days after, and accepted the offer.
