‘The Last American Virgin’ (1982) has one of the most realistic endings in a teen flick ever, imho
A hidden gem and favorite of mine.
It was a realistic and true ending, especially in the 80s teen sex comedy genre.
Awkward guy has an attractive friend who screws over girl. Awkward guy likes girl. Awkward guy does all he can to win over girl and even helps her out more than anyone when she had no one else to turn to. Girl kisses awkward guy and they are sorta becoming a thing (in his mind). Girl gets back with awkward guys attractive friend instead in the end and he realizes she used him.
Tears flow.
A guilty pleasure of mine.
Fun fact, the cast had to wear their own clothing and do their own hair and makeup etc. because the film had a low budget that couldn’t pay to keep those people around. The cast of teens is also played by actual teenagers for a change (for the most part). The film was going to have a sequel that follows Gary to college but it was canceled after this one flopped in theaters, however it made millions of dollars after being released to home video and gained a cult following.

I remember the first time I saw this entertaining film on cable. I was amazed at how funny, very real, and ultimately very sad it was. That ending is one of the saddest I’ve ever seen.

It's actually a remake of an Israeli film called Lemon Popsicles. It was so popular, especially in Japan, that it spawned several sequels and this American attempt. Lawrence Monoson is really impressive. Sadly, this movie has become the favorite of Incels.

The American attempt is pretty much a direct remake of the Israeli film as it had the same writer/creator/director etc.

The hot one is Steven Antin who was David Geffen's lover. His sister formed the Pussycat Dolls. Steven would later direct Burlesque starring Cher and Christina.
