Why did Gidget not become a gay icon?

Our beloved Sally Field played her at one point.

A cloying femme surrounded by sweaty men in speedos, the sun glistening over their beads of perspiration. Who wouldn’t want a Moon Doggie in their life? Or to spend their time surrounded by a fleet of hot men?

She sort of is.

Have you not seen the 2001 movie of Charles Busch's "Psycho Beach Party"? It's hilariously campy and is most a satire of the Gidget movies: instead of Gidget, Moondoggie, and the Big Kahuna, there's Chicklet, Starcat, and the Big Kanaka.

it just came out on Criterion,.

Watching Gidget Grows Up as part of a Saturday Matinee on my local station in the 1980s was a formative experience for this little gayling. Karen Valtenine, New York City, Paul Lynde and Nina Foch? Who could ask for anything more?

She's the first portrayal of real crying of a tv character. I was impressed, Sally!

Sandra Dee. Sally was the follow up.

Hardly.

Deborah Walley was Gidget in the sequel, "Gidget Goes Hawaiian," followed by Cindy Carol in "Gidget Goes to Rome."

When???

by Anonymousreply 6August 16, 2025 12:33 AM

Yeah, there were lots of good looking guys but no speedos.

by Anonymousreply 7August 16, 2025 12:36 AM

Some of us had doubts about angels being real.

by Anonymousreply 8August 16, 2025 1:10 AM

She was no Ann Marie. Ann Marie was tinsel on a dream.

by Anonymousreply 9August 16, 2025 1:25 AM

Because Gidget is a fucking stupid name.

by Anonymousreply 10August 16, 2025 1:30 AM

It's a cross between girl and midget, r10.

I found the Sandra Dee movies and Sandra Dee very very annoying. The only reason to watch is James Darren.

by Anonymousreply 14August 16, 2025 2:36 AM

r14 There was only one Sandra Dee movie.

by Anonymousreply 15August 16, 2025 2:44 AM

I like the show more than the movies

by Anonymousreply 16August 16, 2025 4:17 AM

She knows why.
