Hating Looking

Was hate watching “Looking” a DL pastime? I really liked it.

I remember a lot of criticism of it consisted of viewers disliking it because they didn’t “see” themselves in it and therefore couldn’t relate to any of the characters. I’ve seen many movies and TV shows i didn’t “see” my myself in but still enjoyed them.

Thoughts?

I thought it was good and wish it had lasted a couple more seasons.

by Anonymousreply 1August 15, 2025 4:18 PM

It was pretty well savaged by DLers, IIRC, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

R1- I wished LOOKING had two or three more seasons. There's only one other HBO show that was short lived that I wished had several more seasons- ROME.

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2025 4:28 PM

Nothing duller than people who can only enjoy television and movies if they can 'see themselves' depicted, or insist that characters need to be 'likeable'.

by Anonymousreply 4August 15, 2025 4:30 PM

I thought it was quite relatable and really enjoyed it.

Of course DL's numerous gay incels, shut-ins, basement dwellers and KKKlan Grannies couldn't relate to it and hated it because it didn't depict their "lifestyles."

by Anonymousreply 5August 15, 2025 4:30 PM

We hated it, but we hate everything and REALLY hate everything gay.

But secretly we loved it, because we love everything gay.

What isn't?

It was so timid, and the little mouse who was the lead was terrible as always, but worse his interpreted his character at every turn as someone afraid of his own little mouse shadow (and the director somehow let him do.)

I hated it because I had high expectations. Haigh's "Weekend" is the best gay film ever, by far. This series, however, felt like it was rewritten by a committee based on a 20 year old script (with a sprinkling of jargon and current issues through in to freshen it -- which only made it staler, and the characters weaker and more insipid.

"Weekend"s two characters each appeared as one thing and then revealed themselves as something different from how they began. There was a rawness and also a depiction of how love happens, and what it does. "Looking" set out to do something different, but in the end did nothing. It certainly revealed no truth.

I feel SEEN!

Loved it, don’t care what the bitter skanks have to say.

by Anonymousreply 10August 15, 2025 4:53 PM

Princess Patty was an awful character.

by Anonymousreply 11August 15, 2025 4:57 PM

There was one scene where there was a rave party montage kinda thing in a redwood Forrest, with a great mix of Sister Sledge (I think). It was so cool / beautiful. I liked the show overall. Love Jonathan Groff

Hunting Season was a better gay series in that era. With more explicit sex scenes, too.

by Anonymousreply 13August 15, 2025 5:17 PM

My main gripe was that the core cast was supposed to be in their 30s, but acted much younger. Maybe that was the point, but it felt bogus.

by Anonymousreply 14August 15, 2025 5:19 PM

It seemed to be written by inexperienced writers. EVERY episode was an "event". A birthday party, a restaurant opening, a video game launch, a wedding etc etc. It was like they couldn't just write about normal every day life.

by Anonymousreply 15August 15, 2025 5:24 PM

It wasn’t just DL. Pretty much everyone hated it at the time. It was sort of the And Just Like That of its time.

I thought it was fine. Sometimes fun. Sometimes very hot. Sometime boring. I would have taken a few more seasons.

I do agree with the people who say that Patrick was an annoying character to say the least. I really wanted to smack when he was on that decommissioned navy shape hopping from group to group- he was SO happy go lucky.

I wonder if he was for FRAUS to enjoy not gay guys.

I thought Domenick was realistic. He was a hot guy who was worried about aging and being left behind ( he was still just a waiter) career wise and although he knew he was generally considered hot he was quite insecure about his looks.

by Anonymousreply 17August 15, 2025 5:42 PM

I don't think everyone acted immature but Patrick certainly did, r14. I was 23 when the show came out and I thought he was a baby. What kind of a grown man is anxious that their Latin date might be uncut?

by Anonymousreply 18August 15, 2025 6:12 PM

I do remember Patrick’s pearl clutching over guys cruising in the park in SF during the first episode a bit odd. He reminded of Davey Wavey going to the bathhouse with his twink bff and giggling at how ewwwww it was.

At least Patrick had a decent career, unlike toxic Augustine and Deadly Dull Dom.

It was created by Andrew Haigh. He's a great writer/director. He also did the movie WEEKEND.

by Anonymousreply 23August 15, 2025 6:22 PM

Early on we were expected to believe that Patrick, an out gay professional living in one of the gayest cities in the world, was absolutely clueless about HIV risks and testing. I kinda lost interest at that point.

by Anonymousreply 24August 15, 2025 6:46 PM

I think we're past the point where we need to support any gay representation in media. Back in the old days, it was more important, but today no gays or lesbians have to support any kind of entertainment that isn't good or just isn't their cuppa.

Billy Eichner bitched about this after the failure of BROS. Sorry, Billy, you're not owed anyone's support because you're gay.

by Anonymousreply 25August 15, 2025 6:47 PM

If you feel that way, r25, then I can only say you're a WEIRDO!

by Anonymousreply 26August 15, 2025 7:12 PM

One of my favorite shows of the past few years. Only wish they could've had more seasons. The "wrap-up" movie was ok.

by Anonymousreply 27August 15, 2025 8:32 PM

Along with Murray Bartlett's Dom, I loved Lauren Weedman as Doris.

by Anonymousreply 28August 15, 2025 11:55 PM

I liked it.

by Anonymousreply 29August 15, 2025 11:57 PM

Loved Weekend, hated Looking. Looking was beyond boring.

by Anonymousreply 30August 15, 2025 11:59 PM

I lived two blocks from Patrick's apartment in Lower Hight while this was being filmed. My life was more interesting than his on any given day. I tried to like it but it wasn't good. I'd have liked it more if had been from Richie's perspective. And if Richie had been naked, preferably in my apartment.
