Americans, what U.S. cities do you recommend to foreign visitors?
My question is spurred by the "Americans, how many if these U.S. cities have you been to?"
I am always curious about the travel recommendations to visiting foreigners (and thinking of suggestions made in good faith) -- and why.
The cities I usually recommend: New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, and Charleston SC. The last is for visitors with time or on a repeat visit, but the big four get very good reactions -- and Philadelphia fares quite well.
One popular recommendation I don't make: New Orleans (unless they are wild for jazz). I think it's more interesting to Americans as a Euro-Lite experience, an American city with obvious European influences, boozy, sloppy, dirty. fir any European, New Orleans will recall the last time their city hosted football finals. It's more exotic to Americans than to Europeans. And L.A., too, seems always to have been a better idea than a reality.

None. Stay away for your own good. Spend your money In countries that don't hate you or your ethnicity. Do not come here and financially support this authoritarian takeover. Stop normalizing it, too. Nothing in the US is normal anymore.
Do you read the news, OP? Are you posting from 2012 or just trolling? You can't be serious.

Agree with R1. I would not recommend that anyone from outside the US visit until we’ve defeated fascism.

I think that is a great list. The SC addition is perfect for something a bit smaller. I might swap something like Sedona or Flagstaff or Santa Fe since those are unique to the US. I know we hate Texas but I do like Austin and Hill Country.

Two years ago, I took a very fancy Italian heart surgeon and his wife around Philadelphia. They enjoyed themselves and liked the city very much.
But you do have to explain the crazies and the people camped out on the street. You also have to explain where not to go, and the people to avoid.

Before it went full Trump, I used to spend a lot of time in Miami. It was full of French and Italian tourists.

I've heard foreigners love New Orleans. They find the vibe unique and love a Southern accent.

I've found that Americans love certain East Coast cities--Boston, Charleston, Savannah--because they remind them of Europe and "Old World charm," but that's usually the last thing Europeans want to see because they can get the real thing back home.
I always recommend NYC, LA, and Chicago, but they alm ost all want to go to Las Vegas because they've heard so much about it. I always tell them so that the best thing to see in the USA are the natural wonders you won't get to see anywhere else: the national parks (especially Yosemite when it's not too crowded, and Arches), the Hwy 1 coast between LA and SF, the Columbia Gorge, the Grand Canyon, the Boundary Waters in minnesota.

I used to think Europeans would like Boston (my home city of origin) but it’s exactly like R9 said.
Send them to things that are distinctly American: the redwoods, the desert, the Rockies, and NYC, Miami, New Orleans. But yes, maybe after Trump and his cabal are gone from power.

San Francisco is the most beautiful American city. Hopefully they have a handle on the homeless situation. But tourists should also go to Moab Utah and see the real American desert.

An awful lot of Europeans seem to like "route 66" and take self-driving tours along it. In Amarillo and Albuquerque, I've actually seen tourist signage in German.

Not american per se, at least by birth, but my favorites are NYC, Boston, New Orleans and San Francisco. New Orleans is especially overlooked by international tourists, I think mostly because its sort of out of the way from other touristy areas, but it's so quintessentially american (in a great way) . You are not going to find many tourists for other countries there either, adding to the american charm of it all. The food is arguably the best in the U.S and the people are probably the warmest, friendliest people you will find there. More like something you'd expect in a smaller town.
So all the 4 I mentioned are great, but non americans need to stop sleeping on NOLA. I miss it so much.

I dont agree OP that New Orlenas is Europe lite AT ALL. New Orleans is 100% american. It might have a few old world french embellishments but its its own city, what with the spanish, carribean and african influences.

Tucson in the dead of winter. It's 70 degrees and the desert is beautiful.

I agree with R1
Still, on the East Coast: NYC, Philly, Boston and DC. OP is correct, Charleston is lovely.
Midwest: Chicago
South: New Orleans
Texas: San Antonio and Austin
Southwest: Santa Fe and Tuscon
West Coast: San Francisco and San Diego
The Brits and Germans I know all want to visit Las Vegas

Denver Colorado is beautiful and temperate in the summer. As is Lake Tahoe.

Stay out of the big cities if you want to see America. Go to the national parks instead.
