Who would be your celebrity friend IRL?

Based on what you know about a famous person’s (past or present) real life personality, who do you think you’d be friends with in real life?

This will sound crazy, but Maureen Callahan. I find her parsing of popular culture is very interesting. Her show The Never just started a couple of months ago and she is totally on fire.

It is hard to choose someone else because virtually everyone I think of is an aggressive narcissist. I worked with someone famous in the international fashion world and she was so narcissistic that it made working with her incredibly difficult in many ways. It gets very bizarre. You can complement a project from last year because that isn’t close enough to the narcissist. She need something done today to be close enough to her supply. If something was done at 3pm, it doesn’t mean anything, only what was done at 5pm. Once we talked about a real trauma of hers that affected me deeply. Suddenly she said, from Cannes, that she was going waterskiing. She has literally started painting her exposed arms silver to get attention. She works constantly with a photographer who has literally almost killed her several times for wild shots. She calls the photog her best friend and she pays for these photos herself. No magazine has solicited them.

Interesting that all but one responses are female celebrities. I didn’t count Ed Grimley’s response, but gave it a like - made me chuckle.

DL Fave Sharon Stone. I'd love to open a bottle of vodka with her and listen a story about the time she was almost kidnapped by the SLA or the time she almost fucked Boris Yeltsin. I would never accuse her of lying and just soak it all in.

by Anonymousreply 82August 14, 2025 8:03 PM

Actually, r77 they both have spotty reputations about being very grand, difficult and unfriendly in certain situations, especially her.

I met them once briefly and they seemed nice, but I've heard otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 83August 14, 2025 9:18 PM

R77 I shared a table with them at L.A. Farmer's Market. They were very pleasant to be around.

by Anonymousreply 84August 14, 2025 10:55 PM

María Conchita Alonso

by Anonymousreply 85August 15, 2025 10:49 AM

Liza would be fun.

by Anonymousreply 86August 15, 2025 11:06 AM

Elisabeth Shue also seems fun

by Anonymousreply 87August 15, 2025 11:10 AM

Rick Steves and I would def smoke a bowl together

by Anonymousreply 88August 15, 2025 11:29 AM

Liza would be a hoot at brunch. Charlotte Rhea would have been too.

But I think I’d want to be friends with Gilda Radner.

by Anonymousreply 89August 15, 2025 11:49 AM

R89 I doubt it. She was not a happy person.

by Anonymousreply 90August 15, 2025 12:02 PM

None of them. All celebrities are careerist narcissists.

by Anonymousreply 91August 15, 2025 12:17 PM

Martin Scorcese. He has encyclopedic knowledge of film, and I could listen to him all day. He is interesting IMO.

by Anonymousreply 92August 15, 2025 12:24 PM

Jamie Lee Curtis. You may laugh, but I have seen a few interviews of hers in recent years, and she seems incredibly kind and understanding. Tremendously warm. I liked her so much and she seems like she would treat others nicely. She is someone who came out of addiction and became a much better person.

by Anonymousreply 93August 15, 2025 1:12 PM

From the interviews I’ve seen with him over the years, Bill Mumy (Lost in Space) seems like he would be a cool guy to hang with.

by Anonymousreply 94August 15, 2025 2:09 PM

Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think he'd be wonderful, funny kind interesting.

by Anonymousreply 95August 15, 2025 3:04 PM

I met Selma Blair once, in the wild, not at an event, and she was just lovely. This was before she got sick. She was so warm and friendly. I wanted to be her friend.

by Anonymousreply 96August 15, 2025 3:24 PM

Gwyneth Paltrow., seriously.

Me: Oh, Gwyneth, 40 minutes with you and I hate everyone.

Gwyneth: [laughing]. I know! Me too.

by Anonymousreply 97August 15, 2025 3:56 PM

Parker Posey. I'd also like to hang out with Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.

by Anonymousreply 98August 15, 2025 4:11 PM

Vance would be sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 99August 15, 2025 4:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 105August 28, 2025 6:52 AM

Imagine getting to hear her sing all the time, r105.

by Anonymousreply 106August 28, 2025 8:57 AM

I think Olivia Colman would be a lovely friend.

by Anonymousreply 107August 28, 2025 7:30 PM

Christopher Walken.

by Anonymousreply 108August 28, 2025 10:58 PM

Rodney Allen Rippy

by Anonymousreply 109August 29, 2025 10:36 AM

Mindy Cohn

by Anonymousreply 110August 29, 2025 11:31 AM

I agree, R110. Mindy seems like she would be a fun friend to have.

by Anonymousreply 111August 29, 2025 11:38 AM

Mindy Kaling or Tina Fey. They both seem less Hollywood/LA than the typical celeb. I think both went to college. It’s not that I see a college degree as a friend factor, but I think those four extra years as a “regular” person might make them less dissimilar to me.

Kaling might get exhausting, but she has a little bit of an underdog factor I like - both herself and she went on unappealing but media bullied Markle’s show. And then hilariously unintentionally made a fool of her with the name thing.

Fey is close to my age and I’ve found two of her shows (30 Rock and Kimmy) consistently hit my funny bone. I think we’d laugh at the same things and have shared points of reference.

I can see the appeal of Aniston, but for me she’s too Hollywood. Would she eat Doritos on my couch? No. I suspect I’d get on better with Brad (but he wouldn’t be in my top 10 candidates). That middle class, non entertainer family background thing again. It somehow comes through. Also Steve buschemi. I don’t think he has the four years as a regular person college student, but he was firefighter, so that’s several years as a regular person. Maybe the doctor from the Hangover and Community. Sneaking of Community, Danny Glover comes across that way to me, too. But I think he’s too young for us to have a lot in common.

by Anonymousreply 112August 29, 2025 12:01 PM

R59 He was great on Teen Wolf.

by Anonymousreply 113August 29, 2025 12:45 PM

Emilio Estevez.

by Anonymousreply 114August 29, 2025 12:47 PM

Emma Stone

Adam Pally

I’m not even that big a fan of either one of them but they are the closest in personality to my actual friends.

by Anonymousreply 115August 29, 2025 12:53 PM

Julie Kavner, Laurie Metcalf, Sally Hawkins, Lorraine Toussaint, and Ali MacGraw. Thoughtful, smart, and without the massive egos of many other celebrities.

by Anonymousreply 116August 29, 2025 1:10 PM

I used to think Amy Sedaris, but knowing that her besties are SJP, Andy Cohen, Justin Theroux…ehhh, maybe not.

by Anonymousreply 117August 29, 2025 2:09 PM

Alison Arngrim and Sam Rockwell

by Anonymousreply 118August 29, 2025 2:17 PM

Dawson.

I'm sure we'd have loads of fun every weekend.

by Anonymousreply 119August 29, 2025 2:27 PM

Mark Ruffalo

by Anonymousreply 120August 29, 2025 2:29 PM

R108 unless you're on a boat.

by Anonymousreply 121August 29, 2025 2:51 PM

I am team Kim Cattrall in all things could definitely spend weekends at her Canadian home sitting by the fire and drinking wine and talking about art. And I think Sarah Jessica Parker believes her own hype and caused the disaster that is AJTL by not throwing Kim a bone and giving her an extra couple of hundred thousand an episode and storylines that didn’t include her sexting Miranda’s kid.

But I also think I would be friends with Sarah Jessica Parker. She’s fun and in touch with her working class roots and I like that she has a separate social life to her husband.

by Anonymousreply 122August 29, 2025 2:58 PM

I already said Emilio Estevez, but if I was younger, it'd probably be Tyler Posey and/or Dylan O'Brien. They just seem like the kind of guys I hung around with, and was friends with, for better or worse.

by Anonymousreply 123August 29, 2025 3:16 PM

Anyone who could get me good drugs.

by Anonymousreply 124August 29, 2025 4:09 PM

R124 Justin Beiber would be your guy.

by Anonymousreply 125August 29, 2025 4:21 PM

Lol r121. Touché.

by Anonymousreply 126August 29, 2025 6:13 PM

Mindy Cohn. She collects best friends like her best friend Angelina collects children.

by Anonymousreply 127August 29, 2025 6:44 PM

Richard Osman seems smart, funny, and probably a good friend.

by Anonymousreply 128August 30, 2025 1:32 AM

Back in the 90s I would have loved to have been friends with Jason Gould, just so I could be in his apartment when his mother would call and leave messages on his answering machine.

(Barbra's voice): Jason, it's your mother again! Why haven't I heard from you?

by Anonymousreply 129August 30, 2025 2:51 AM

John Waters? Camille Paglia?

by Anonymousreply 130August 30, 2025 2:54 AM
