Russell Tovey & Tom Blyth in "Plainclothes"

Trailer released today. In theaters Sept. 19th.

[quote] Syracuse, 1997. Promising undercover police officer Lucas (Tom Blyth) is dealing with a breakup and the recent loss of his father. When he receives an assignment to lure and arrest gay men in a mall bathroom, he is surprised to discover a scintillating connection with Andrew (Russell Tovey), one of his targets.

[quote]As their secret connection deepens and internal pressure to deliver arrests intensifies, Lucas finds himself torn between duty and desire. At his mother’s New Year’s Eve party, Lucas loses a letter no one was ever meant to read. With time running out and his secret life closing in around him, the evening builds towards an explosive reckoning where everything he’s buried threatens to erupt.

The smell and sounds of other men eliminating must evoke romantic nostalgia for you!

Ah, the creatures of the night. What sweet music they make.

i met some boyfriends in outdoor cruise areas.

I dont mean I ran into my boyfriends there. I mean we met as strangers, hooked up, and took it from there.

by Anonymousreply 4August 13, 2025 8:17 AM

Tovey is a bad choice here. He looks way past his prime as if that hot piece Tom Blyth would get all worked up over that,

by Anonymousreply 5August 13, 2025 12:23 PM

Well, I do declare! Ah found the subject matta disgustin' an' distasteful an' am sponsorin' a bill to boycott this liberal trash!

by Anonymousreply 6August 13, 2025 12:41 PM

[quote]where everything he’s buried threatens to erupt

That phrasing wasn't a mistake.

Joking aside, I didn't realise that still went on in the late 90s. I suppose it was still before the internet had properly taken off.

But the part about worrying a letter might get out feels anachronistic. I've only seen that kind of plot in stories set in the era when homosexuality was still illegal.

A May-December romance, with the added smell of urine!

R7 George Michael was arrested in 1998. Larry Craig was arrested in 2007.

You can find cruising vids filmed yesterday.

I saw this at Sundance, it's good. Blyth is excellent (so is the actress who plays his mom) - Tovey doesn't leave much of an impression. The sex scenes should've been filthier. Blyth's character would've been a nuclear bomb of horniness but the first time they have sex is shot like a music video. It needed a rawer quality and I'm not just saying this because I wanted to see that. It would've felt realer

by Anonymousreply 11August 19, 2025 3:51 PM

I’m surprised Tovey isn’t playing the cop.

by Anonymousreply 12August 19, 2025 3:58 PM

Saw it in June at NewFest in NYC. It's very good. Blyth is fantastic and in almost every scene.

by Anonymousreply 13August 22, 2025 9:20 PM

Two threads for this?

I’m starting to see why some of us here go total national socialist about this sort of thing.

Just do a damn search.

by Anonymousreply 14August 22, 2025 10:09 PM

Why does it take so friggin' long to be released? Sept in the US, Oct in the UK, when it's clearly all finished if it's been shown.

Time's a tickin'!

by Anonymousreply 15August 23, 2025 7:48 PM

R11, is Blythe the bottom?

by Anonymousreply 16September 15, 2025 11:34 PM

There's three threads. But this one is the most successful so far.

by Anonymousreply 17September 15, 2025 11:43 PM

I'm looking forward to this movie. I think Tom B. is adorable.

I loved Tom Blyth in Benediction

"eliminating"

Imagine being such a nellie priss that you have to call answering nature's call "eliminating."

by Anonymousreply 20September 16, 2025 12:19 AM

Saw it the Ptown filmfest. Enjoyable, but as others mentioned, Blythe was the standout.

The Q&A was odd, with these big long monologues posing as questions.

by Anonymousreply 21September 16, 2025 12:31 AM

Q&As ae always the worst, I hate them. Don't let the audience speak, ever. Just get an intelligent moderator on stage and let us listen to the talent talk. Audience "questions" are ALWAYS trash

by Anonymousreply 22September 16, 2025 12:46 AM

Yes, the Q&A "questions" always end up being some rando talking about random shit for like 5 minutes too long.

by Anonymousreply 23September 16, 2025 2:21 AM

I haven't seen it, but it looks like the characters are too old to be in this situation.

by Anonymousreply 24September 16, 2025 12:04 PM

Too old to be cruising in the 90s? Are you a lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 25September 16, 2025 11:37 PM

R25 I meant too old for the in/out gay relationship movie trope.

by Anonymousreply 26September 17, 2025 11:09 AM

NYT praise

Lucas (Tom Blyth, in a searing portrayal) and Andrew (Russell Tovey, quietly affecting)

. The film’s sexual frankness would have been nearly unthinkable 30 years ago, and Blyth and Tovey’s chemistry smolders with danger and earned outrage.

the heat builds in unexpected ways, ultimately igniting through the quiet agony of living as someone you’re not.

by Anonymousreply 27September 20, 2025 4:14 PM

R15, money. You need to find a distributor. Contracts have to be signed. Promotion isn’t cheap either.

Is Tom Blyth straight or what? He's got great CSL

by Anonymousreply 31September 24, 2025 1:49 AM

CSL? He looks pretty serious in the trailer.

The movie was more intense than I expected. Most recent gay movies are gauzy, candy-colored fantasia aimed at female audiences. This one harkened back to the paranoia and angst of the pre-PrEP 90s closet.

by Anonymousreply 34October 3, 2025 7:40 AM

Do you have any new thoughts on this film? I hope it opens in my area by the end of the month.
