I just watched CODA (2020)

I was so preoccupied with worries about COVID and everything else at the time and was paying no attention to movies. I didn’t even realize this was a movie until I looked up a recent list of Best Picture winners and was like, what the hell was this?

I was completely underwhelmed. The directing style and photography was flat and unimaginative and the story was formulaic. It was also very exposition heavy in the beginning as we needed to be reminded that she could hear and they could not. I didn’t like the characters and I thought the father was gross and crude.

I did like that the high school students looked very real and age-appropriate. And that none of them were Broadway ready. But I thought it was sorta boring.

One of my favorite movies. Everyone gave an honest performance.

by Anonymousreply 1August 11, 2025 12:57 AM

It’s an average film.

by Anonymousreply 2August 11, 2025 12:57 AM

I watched it the day of that year's Oscars and quickly realized that the only way I'd make it through was to play it at 1.25 speed. Even then it was a haul. Feh.

Also known as the movie that won Best Picture at the Oscars in the same year in which Gloria the hippo sent her closeted husband to slap Marty the zebra.

Could the "You're trying too hard" troll please report for clean-up? We have a spill on R4.

Marginally less disposable than a Hallmark movie. The nepo baby lead is a charisma vacuum. The movie's saving graces are the performances by Kotsur, Matlin, and especially Daniel Durand as her family.

Eugenio Derbez's performance as the teacher is Hague-worthy.

by Anonymousreply 6August 11, 2025 1:06 AM

I was surprised that they made Derbez’s character straight. His character was such a cardboard cutout and the ending audition was ripped off of “Flashdance”.

by Anonymousreply 7August 11, 2025 1:13 AM

I didn't like it, although I did manage to slog through the whole thing.

The only reason I did is because I've always thought Marlee Matlin was hot.

by Anonymousreply 8August 11, 2025 1:19 AM

The opening dialogue to establish the characters was pretty much, “You’re deaf and I can hear!” as though they had just met one another despite being family.

God but yall are some hard bitten bitches ! I found it sweet and endearing. I LOVED her audition scene .

It was a wonderful movie, but not at all a Best Picture. Ever since the MPA changed the way they vote for Best Picture, (and increased the nominees from 5 to 10), we've lots of middle-of -the-road winner, (see Green Book).

by Anonymousreply 11August 11, 2025 6:50 AM

It’s the Academy, R11, not the MPA (formerly the MPAA)..

Covid lockdowns were in 2020. CODA was released August 13, 2021. It won best picture March 27, 2022 at the 94th Academy Awards.

What has COVID got to do with CODA being overlooked or forgettable if seen during its run?

by Anonymousreply 13August 11, 2025 7:39 AM

Because I fell into a depression during the pandemic and spent the next four years in one, R13.

by Anonymousreply 14August 11, 2025 10:52 AM

ok sorry to hear that. hope you're doing better now.

by Anonymousreply 15August 11, 2025 11:05 AM

It’s written and produced on a not much higher level than an ABC Afterschool Special.

by Anonymousreply 16August 11, 2025 11:11 AM

Where but in a movie would a prospective student audition for Berklee with “Both Sides Now”?

by Anonymousreply 17August 11, 2025 12:28 PM

I liked it. Not one Super Hero!

by Anonymousreply 18August 11, 2025 12:31 PM

They set up this bitchy girl as the bad one and we got no satisfaction in seeing her get a comeuppance.

by Anonymousreply 19August 11, 2025 4:22 PM

At least it prevented The Power of the Dog from winning.

by Anonymousreply 20August 11, 2025 6:54 PM

One pf the worst Oscar winners for Best Picture along with Nomadland, Crash and Green Book.
