Clark Gable, Doris Day, Gig Young, & Mamie Van Doren are smart, sexy fun in '58's "Teachers Pet"

Clark Gable, a quarter of a century later after "It Happened One Night," played another rough around the edges reporter, out to get a story & the leading lady, this time Doris Day, in 1958's Teacher’s Pet. TCM airs this smart, fun comedy tonight at 8 pm/ET as part of its day-long tribute to Gable. Gig Young and Mamie Van Doren add to the fun! My take Teacher here:

Mamie said in her autobio that Doris had some her best scenes and at least one of her songs cut because Doris was jealous of her.

My guess is that Doris Day didn't even know Mamie Van Doren was IN the movie.

And imagine if we had Doris Day, Rock Hudson, and Gig Young instead of Tony Randall in those three movies!

Then we would have had something.

Mamie's putting the blame on Doris!

by Anonymousreply 5August 10, 2025 10:26 PM

I think it would have been better to have this cast do “They Shoot Doris, Don’r They?”

I love this flick! Day and Gable have a surprising chemistry, and Day is just a touch lezzy in look and demeanor. They play off each other so well--two charming, no-nonsense actors.

Love your website, OP.

Oh goody! I have a pair of Mamie Van Doren Boudoir slippers and I can wear them and prance around while watching the movie.

Thank Hun!

Mamie's treading on *thin* ice.

I think that's Doris.

Clark Gable is always worth watching.

Take out Clark Gable, add Rock Hudson, and make Doris an interior designer and voila!!! You have "Pillow Talk."

Bonus points: Nick Adams role does not need to be recast.

All I can think about is Parker Posey’s audition piece

Love Doris’s atomic age eyebrows on this. Amazingly, she reinvented herself yet again the next year, moving into the sexy but driven and smart modern female era of her career with “Pillow Talk” and her subsequent ‘60s films with Rock, Jim, Brian Keith…

And Mr. Gable—hubba, hubba, baby. 😍

Doris had a great figure, not one flaw. Perfect hourglass without being fat. Loved her in ‘The man who knew too much.”

"That Touch of Mink," with Doris, Cary Grant and Gig was better, if only for the classic scene in the Automat.

by Anonymousreply 17August 11, 2025 3:22 AM

I think it was that Doris made it easy for her male costar to have chemistry with her. Look at her and Rock, then look at Julie and Rock.

Love when she imitates Mamie and swings her hips and ass around and Gable responds with delight as if he’s been slapped.

That was back when women knew enough to wear foundation garments.

I've read that Doris was put off by Mamie's onset behavior, flirting with all the guys in the cast and crew and acting like a cheap tart.

But in fairness to Doris, she had just lost her beloved brother, Paul Kappel, before the shoot commenced, to meningitis after suffering a stroke at the age of 37. Paul had been doing publicity at the musical arm of Arwin Productions (Doris and Martin Melcher's business venture), and some blamed Melcher for overburdening Paul. A grieving Doris and no time or patience for Mamie's frivolous antics.

... and ubiquitous character actor Charles Lane as "Roy" - one of Gable's hard-nosed newsroom colleagues.

I love Doris' delayed reaction to Clark's kiss......

First time I saw 'Teachers Pet' - I liked it and, of course Clark Gable was tremendous. I've always liked him as an actor and I believe some of his personal aura comes through in the character/role he plays. He seems very positive in his take on life and the common sense and logic he conveys (especially when he was firing the Nick Adams character) always comes through.

His best (and last movie) was the Misfits - this immediately followed 'Teachers Pet'. He was GREAT in this movie and I believe he died shortly after the movie completed. What a trooper and a wonderful human being that happened to become an actor.

by Anonymousreply 26August 11, 2025 3:45 PM

"Teacher's Pet" came first, and frankly, "Pillow Talk" was not such a big departure for DD as made out to be... just glitzier and fluffier. And thanks, Reply 7 for the shout out...

I also loved Clark Gable's movie just before this -But Not For Me - where a young Carroll Baker was in love with him and he was also dealing with ex-wife Lilli Palmer.
