Sharon Stone As Phyllis Diller
The result could be either the greatest performance of any actor's career, or the campiest of all time!
What do we think about the possibility of this happening, and can we think of any other, say, casting oddities. Like Bradley Cooper as Woody Allen, or Glenn Close as Ethel Merman.

I knew Phyliis. She was actually an amazing woman. And a very brave one. She was doing stand up comedy at a time when women weren't supposed to be doing stand up, at all. She wouldn't accept that and basically just pushed herself forward. however, to do that, she said that she had to turn herself into a caricature so as not be really a woman as much as almost a clown. Otherwise she wouldn't get booked.
She was way ahead of her time and totally under-appreciated today. There wouldn't have been a Joan Rivers or a Lily Tomlin if it hadn't been for Phyllis.

Disaster. She doesn't have enough empathy to get into such a character's head. Don't think she could handle even an attempted imitation -- look at her bad Brooklyn accent in "Gloria". This is a role for Natasha Lyonne, Carol Kane, or Meryl. Natasha is reportedly "in talks" to do Joan Rivers, so that might not work.
My partner says, "only if it's directed by John Waters"!

The only one who could pull this off is Tracey Ullman. Phyllis is too big a personality for most actresses to do and many aren’t willing to “go there.” They’d probably do some watered down version of her.

Rep 15:
In addition to that, she was also in a few movies, the first to publicize her extensive cosmetic surgery in the mid-1970s and authored quite a few comedic books.
I don't think Stone has the chops to do Diller.

There are few performers in Hollywood who possess the diversity of talent, high-octane beauty and scorching sensuality of Sharon Stone. Now, with her dream project of portraying the legendary Phillis Diller beginning to actualize, Tinseltown and the world will see a cinematic transformation like none before.
Sharon will not only portray but embody Phyllis, infusing her characterization with the complexity and pathos this icon deserves. Cinema goers will finally see Sharon’s scalding sense of humor onscreen, opening up a world of new casting possibilities that were formerly limited by Sharon’s breathless beauty.
With the aid of some of the finest facial prostheses in Hollywood history, viewers and the Academy will be speechless as they witness not only a transformation, but a physical embodiment of a comedic legend.
The journey started with “Basic Instinct,” a film that shook cinema with its heat and took the world by storm. It continued with “Casino,” a journey that the Academy took note of and established Sharon as a cinematic visionary. Now, with her Phyllis Diller biopic, the journey will be both complete and just beginning.
Sharon will finally have her date with Oscar and their union will officially be made formal after this project. There was always only one actress, one legend who had the passion, skill and ability to pull off this near impossible characterization. That actress, that legend, is Sharon Stone.

[quote]The young Stone was exceptionally bright, as she’s quick to tell me. She describes herself as “fiercely intelligent” (two well-chosen words) and her IQ is reportedly 154 (genius level). She skipped several grades at school; at 15, she and four boys were sent to Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania as an “experiment”, three years ahead of most of their peers. She majored in English literature and excelled at golf, but left before graduating. “My college professor was furious when I was leaving for modelling,” she says. “He was like: ‘You’re throwing away your career,’ because he really thought my career was in writing.”
Our Sharon has been sipping from the well of untruths again. And it appears she has overindulged.
[quote] “Why didn’t I get more parts? I really wish you could tell me. Sometimes I think it was because I was too good.”
Never change, Sharon. Never change.

I couldn’t picture Renee Z as Judy, but she pulled it off. With the right director, makeup and costuming, Sharon could pull it off. Diller was pretty restrained in her delivery and mannerisms. Her look was over the top, but she wasn’t. That would be the nuance in playing her. That’s what any actor would need to nail.

I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, but Phyllis Diller deserves to be remembered and a biopic would be appropriate.
There have been a lot of successful female standup comics, but Diller came first. Her success eased the way for theirs.

Her autobiography "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse" is a good read.
She's a fine writer and a thoughtful woman. She details how she determined the proper hem length and boots to make her legs look particularly unflattering. Phyllis had five kids and a deadbeat husband, so she had to go to work, starting with calling veterans' hospitals and asking if they wanted a free comedy show.
As mentioned above, she was a respected concert pianist, a pretty good painter, and an outspoken atheist when people weren't talking about that in public.

[quote]Stone added, “You know, she didn’t hit it big until she was 49. She lived in a trailer park with five kids and her schizophrenic husband, and practiced her act on women at the laundromat.
None of this is true.

She did Law & Order (SVU or original...can't remember) and stunk up the screen. Maybe this will earn her the Razzie Lifetime Achievement Award. I love a diva but Sharon Stone is a horrible, horrible actress. Basic Instinct and Casino were decent movies but hardly exclusively because of her performances.

I really wish she would just do a bunch of remakes of latter era Crawford films, like Female on the Beach, Torch Song, or Queen Bee. Ever since I saw her in the remake of Diabolique in the '90s where she played a high school teacher in couture apparel and pumps, I realized that becoming the new latter era Crawford was her destiny...also, because she can't act.
