Shit. Gay men who were born in 1910-19 who I knew as a boy would often share stories of the little country places they owned. A group would "go down" for the weekend and pick up men all over the countryside for sex. It had to be done in a certain way, with a flash of cash for the younger ones and a little finesse with the married ones, but it was The Thing.

Taverns for the mature, stock shows and county fairs for all ages. Sometimes they'd seal the deal by asking for directions. The game was deniable ambiguity until the connection was established. They were all professionals (journalists, teachers, business men, company owners) and knew how to do the "I'm mainly into women but sometimes I'm just too horny...." lines. Their manner overcame the usual rural mistrust of city strangers.

The only two close-calls I had with being raped as a teen was in the country with "straight" country kids.

Money is a huge incentive.

Most of these return back to these shitty small towns without much opportunity and their dating options are limited, not just because of lack of education, but because there are only other people in the same situation.

Having a kid or getting married can give your life some purpose when you don't have anything else. And I'm serious about this - it can also be free entertainment. Kids take up a lot of time but they can also be a lot of fun.

These guys reminded them of their dads and uncles and coaches, and gained their trust, then using money and vacations with access to boats etc, and a lot of “it’s not gay if you do it for money” rhetoric persuaded them to do more and on camera. some of these guys weren’t themselves fully straight and not even aware of the fact because of their own stereotypically straight interests, but actually discovered it was fun and then they could be used to recruit other guys.
