The continual stereotyping of gay men on TV, film and commercials - when will it stop?

It's so prevalent that I think most of us are desensitized to it. This morning we're watching Halloween Kills on SyFy. One part of the movie is a gay couple, (and they're really sweet). Neither is portrayed is particularly effeminate, but of course one is wearing a kimono style wrap and lots of jewelry, the other is in a pirate shirt and heavy makeup. It's Halloween of course but most of the typical tropes are met. They of course die.

I've noticed lots of commercials lately with lesbian couples portrayed otherwise as mainstream. Yet every fucking Prep commercial has to include stereotyped gay men and drag queens. They'll show two women embracing in commercials but never men. It just goeso n and on.

I agree, OP. And gay men are still portrayed as sexless beings in the mainstream.

Fear and hatred. Simple as that.

The prep and the HIV medication commercials are so cringe.

The one product that targets us is for sexually transmitted diseases. Not a good representation.

I hate seeing them.

Lucas and Marco had what looked like the prelude to real sex on General Hospital the week before last. Lucas is played by Van Hansis.

Okay thanks r4. But most of us work.

There’s also the other end of the gamut where we’re promiscuous whores. We’re either minstrels or whores. Whereas my partner and I are boring white collar professionals who mostly sit watching tv, burping and farting, and then going up to our separate beds because I snore. Hollywood ain’t showing that reality - middle America doesn’t think it exists.

I watch it on hulu.com, r5, after 8:00 PM.

Mid Century Modern was a a catalogue of stereotypes.
