What exactly do Filipinos have against air conditioning?
My partner is from the Philippines, and he’s very Americanized, but his sister never wants to turn on the damn air conditioner. She invited us over to her apartment for dinner last night. When we arrived, she had just finished cooking and it was like walking into an oven. She had been cooking, plus the door was open, and the sun was shining in the door that time of day, so I looked at the thermostat and it said “87 degrees.” She walked over to the corner of the apartment and looked at the thermostat and she said “oh, it’s 87 degrees.” I thought she was going to close the door and turn on the air conditioner, but instead, she just turned on a fan. Great idea, let’s just blow the hot air around.
Don’t get me wrong, I love her, and she has always been nice to me. It was nice of her to invite us over, and she is an amazing cook. But most people who invite guests over for dinner don’t force their guests to sweat like inmates. This is something I have noticed with some of my partner’s other friends as well. We go over for dinner after they cook and it’s just like walking into an oven.

I don't know. I think it's very comfortable in here.

I know a few Filipinos and have been to Manila a few times. They all LOVE aircon and have it on 24/7.
It's her OP - it's not because she's a Filipino.

Nothing wrong with a fan, as long as it's blowing directly over your skin to continually remove the hot air coming off you. I rely on one because I can't afford an AC unit. Paired with a dehumidifier, it's as good as AC for small spaces. And much, much cheaper.

They're probably poor and/or cheap, OP.
Don't marry into a family that lives like this, if it bothers you.

My boyfriend is Filipino and blasts the AC the summer.

I would straight up refuse to be a house that’s 87°. I don’t care if I’m rude about it and feelings get hurt, I’m not about to die of a heat stroke.

R5 They aren’t poor. Both my partner and his sister are nurses in the Bay Area and earn over 200k each. But her apartment is always like that.

Maybe she just doesnt like air conditioning. Some people dont . It is her house after all . Next time you go to her place walk in and screech "Its hotter than two whores on nickle night ! " and whip out a folding fan and collapse on the nearest couch waving it vigorously at your anguished mug .

I'm confused, OP. You've thus far encountered exactly one Filipino person that doesn't use their AC and immediately assume that quirk must be necessarily representative of the entire culture--despite the fact that your own boyfriend, also Filipino, is quite fond of AC?
Did you spend the better part of your life living in an atomic era bomb shelter that you've only recently emerged from?

87 degrees isn't even that hot!

R11 I’m finally under 300 pounds and 87° is still very hot for indoor temperatures.

I went to a friend's house for dinner on Thursday night. She didn't cook, I brought Chinese food. She's an obese woman who stands at 4' 11". She doesn't believe in using the AC and I don't know why. We sat at her dining room table, with three large windows facing west, and the sun coming through the windows which makes it hotter. She has a window AC ten feet from the table, but wouldn't turn it on. She had a celling fan on above the table - all it did was blow hot air around.
We try to get together four times a year - once every season. I usually bring Chinese, we eat then we seat ourselves in her living room and chat / catch up for about ninety minutes. Not this time - we ate, were done in 30 minutes, moved to the living room, and I was leaving 20 minutes later. Too damn hot.

I do not live with air conditioning. I'm acclimated to the heat. 87 degrees is no problem for me. It just doesn't bother me. I prefer the windows open. A fan if I must. Of course, if we're talking dangerous levels then yeah, you need AC.
My own (totally unproven) theory: don't live like a hot-house flower. Live with the seasons. It strengthens you. Less AC in the summer, less heat in the winter. And we need plenty fresh air and sunshine to be healthy.
During the brutal heatwave a few weeks ago, I sped walked 2.5 miles in 98 degree heat. With a "feels like" over 100. No I'm not crazy. And BTW, I'm 72.
The other day I was happy to read this in the NYTimes:

I couldn't even be out in the heat recently when it was in the 90s. I'm not overweight or in bad shape. I'm in my 60s. But it made me sick.
In my workplace when the AC broke and it went above 85 indoors it was unbearable. When it went to 90, we closed.
Not everyone tolerates heat or cold in the same way. I don't think you should be advising people to go out in unhealthy heat, R23. That's terrible advice. There are heat advisories for a reason.
"In July, heat waves caused a significant number of deaths in various regions. In Europe, an estimated 2,300 people died in 12 cities during a heat wave between June 23 and July 2, according to a study published in CNN. In the US, at least 37 heat-related deaths were suspected in July, though this number is likely an underestimate, according to CNN. In Tokyo, over 120 people died from heatstroke in July, according to AP News."

People who come from struggling economies like the Philippines learn not to indulge in "unnecessary" luxuries like A/C so they forget it even exists.

Is she poor? Can't afford prime time ac? I'm in az and I have a new ac that isn't blowing what I want. I set mine at 72 and when it gets over 110 my ac goes up from opening the door I assume to let my dog in the backyard. But today at 5pm the indoor temp said 78! I was like wtf! It ran the whole time and is now just coming down to 77...I don't understand it all all

I tend to run hot, and I will not suffer feeling hot or sticky in my own home. If you are perennially uncomfortable and feel like you can't escape the heat/humidity, it's just miserable.
A/C is a personal requirement...and I live in Southern California where the weather isn't insane. I literally budget for it in the summer.

I have a higher tolerance for heat than many people. Living in perhaps the hottest city in Europe (many days above 40C/104F, I like air conditioning, but I hate to be in a place with icy cold air blasting directly on me. I'd rather face the heat. Air conditioning in high velocity and extremes is just unpleasant for me, overly cold air whipping around, and loud and noisy makes me more uncomfortable than the heat.
I have a good heating/air conditioning that is whisper quiet and calm, but also quick to make any room comfortable quickly. But some systems are so intrusive that I'd rather be warm.

R20 No, I didn't. It's her home, let her do what she wants when entertaining guests (nor would I say it's too cold in someone's house if visiting in the winter). So, instead of speaking up I cut the visit shorter than my usual stay. I think she knew why without it being said.

R31 I am in RI and have central air, which I get serviced twice a year to keep it running. I have the thermostat set at 70 for the summer (per the suggestion of my electric company). Last week, during the heatwave where the temp was hitting / closing in on 100 or higher, my AC was maintaining an inside temp for me at 75. It didn't drop to 70 until overnight, when the outdoor temps dropped and the humidity leveled off. My AC never shut off that week. This past week we had a reprieve, and the outdoor temps felt like late September - the first week of August! This week coming up (starting today) we're back in the heatwave for the next 7 days.

87 is not that bad if you live in a hot area like Arizona, Palm Springs or Texas. It’s hard to get the temperature in your house to be much cooler than that unless you want a $300 electric bill.
