Movies for Cheap Cunts: 1990's "Tremors"
It's streaming for free on YouTube, so you won't even have to pirate this one.
Written as a cheesy B-movie with a simple plot and fun effects, Tremors straddles the line between monster flick and comedy. A handful of Nevada rurals fend off an invasion of giant, man-eating earthworms using increasingly desperate tactics. Bacon and his buddy are sweaty, funny, and scrappy as reluctant desert heroes. They're not gay, but they live together in a very small trailer.
The cast:
Kevin Bacon as Your Stepmom's Shower Fantasy
Fred Ward as Your Gay Uncle's Shower Fantasy
Reba McEntire as Boredom Between Tour Dates
Michael Gross as Survivalist Who Cut All Family Ties
Plus the kid from Jurassic Park has a few lines.

I saw it when it first came out and haven't seen it since, but I remember it as being a lot of fun. Like something you would have gone to a drive-in to see years ago.

Tremors came out in 1989.

I was comparing it to a drive-in era movie, R4, not suggesting that it was literally from the time of drive-ins.

r5, stand down. r4 was commenting on the fact that the OP misidentified the film as coming out in 1990.

R4 IMDB and Google say otherwise. Wipe the Drambuie off your calendar, and you'll get it right.

R7 Well I saw it in 1989. Must be the Mandela Effect.

R9 How? Did your theater magically get a print weeks ahead of schedule? And you blew enough ushers to get a sneak preview?
I think the pills are finally messing with your neurons.

The only person to blow Usher was Justin Bieber.

Close enough, and sold!

This is still one of my favorite movies. I remember turning it on on TV one day, thinking it was going to be a silly horror movie. I was so wrong. It was funny, suspenseful, smartly written, and it had a great cast. Reba McIntire and Michael Gross as the doomsday right wingers with a literal military arsenal in their basement were real standouts.
And who can forget Fred Ward and his thick thighs and ass in those blue jeans? Yum.

Tremors was released in January of 1990 so maybe there was some preview or test screening in late 1989 that r9 got to attend. From Wikipedia:
[quote]Tremors was set for a November 1989 release. However, the MPAA gave the film an R rating owing to language, and the creators decided at the last minute to make the film more commercially available. Over 20 or so uses of the word "fuck" were either cut or redubbed with softer words; examples include "Can you fly, you sucker?" and "We killed that motherhumper", among several others.[16] The film was pushed back to allow more time for editing, and the film was eventually released in January 1990 with a PG-13 rating. Wilson and Maddock later stated they were very happy with the decision to make Tremors appeal to a more family-friendly audience rather than an adult-oriented audience.[16]

Fred Ward was one of the sexiest men Hollywood ever produced and doesn't get his due in that department.

You would have to put a reasonably large sum of money in my hand for me to watch a cheesy monster film starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Reba McEntire.

Give it a watch, R16. I thought the same thing before I watched it, but it really is a fun ride.

"Tremors" is a great film with a surprisingly well-written script and good performances from the cast. The special effects are 30+ years old, but they still hold up.
The sequels that followed are a mixed bag.

My babysitter took my brother and I to see this when I was 7. I loved it, except the part with the doctor and his wife. That made me sad and it went on forever.
I thought Rhonda was pretty cool for a female lead. She was dorky, but smart. (Like I was) Knocking over the water tower and the pole vaulting- damn good thinking (pardon my French).
I agree that Fred Ward was sexy. The first time I saw it I was a Val fan, however.
Nestor sitting in the tire always makes me laugh. Not quite high enough, pal.
