Can they tell their heads from their asses?

Alphabetically L comes before R, and we read from left to right. So it shouldn't be too hard.

I had a friend who would remind herself what left was by making an L by extending her left thumb from her left forefingwr

No, but I can't believe there are people with zero sense of direction.

My great aunt by marriage was like this. She would tell you to turn right but point left.
I fucking didn’t know which way to go.

Last time I went to the doctor, the nurse told me to wait in the first room on the right. I got to the door and asked "Here?" and she said no and pointed me to the second door on the left.

I’ve had a couple of friends whose total lack of a sense of direction almost seemed like willful helplessness. It can be annoying. They can neither give directions nor follow them.

My mother
She has right and left stickers on the dashboard of her car
Needless to say I rarely drive with her

When my mom told me directions. I knew to do the exact opposite to get to where I wanted

Even my GPS gets this wrong sometimes.

It's a known thing, and a real thing, for a lot of people. Be glad it doesn't affect you, because it's not a choice.

I had a friend like that. Had no sense of direction. Also made no attempt to develop a sense of direction. Looked at anyone who did have a sense of direction as if they were aliens.
One time I tried to give her the simplest of directions --- get on freeway going toward downtown. get off on the fifth exit, go a block and you're there. That was too complicated for her.
The fact she got to work, about 20 miles away, and then back home each day was nothing short of miraculous.

I've heard that having difficulty with left vs. right can be connected with being a redhead. I do know a couple of redheads like that, but not all of the redheads that I know. Odd.

Theatre people have this problem.

I have problem with the tleft-roght thing...at times.
"Walking north on Calavet, turn right at the second street," I understand perfectly. (I also know north like a compass.)
"Turn the can to the right", or with your left hand," or "from your left," or "on the left as you enter the kitchen"...perfect.
But, if someone standing in the room or space with me says "on the left...", I think "on whose fucking left? we're not seated together on a bus facing/going the same direction".
Any possible ambiguity about whose left or right or from what vantage and I will ask for clarification.
Absolute = clear
Relative someone else's perspective = not always clear

I know my right from my left when I think about it. I often screw it up, but not for long.

My husband is like this.
I say “go ring finger” when I want him to turn left

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
