Apparently Weapons is one of the great horror movies

Receives an A- Cinemascore (horror almost always scores poorly)

So what's the spoiler? Too much sugar?

by Anonymousreply 1August 9, 2025 4:10 PM

It’s because of Amy Madigan!

She unites the fags and the hags who love them!

by Anonymousreply 2August 9, 2025 4:12 PM

"Get Out" is not one of "the great horror movies," for fuck's sake.

by Anonymousreply 3August 9, 2025 4:14 PM

Yes it is, Donald

by Anonymousreply 4August 9, 2025 4:16 PM

No, it's not, Slackjaw.

by Anonymousreply 5August 9, 2025 4:19 PM

The plot just looks like another pissy concoction like "Hereditary."

by Anonymousreply 6August 9, 2025 4:21 PM

Saw it yesterday. Loved it.

by Anonymousreply 7August 9, 2025 4:32 PM

excellent. zach is a really fresh filmmaker. barbarian was more thematically cohesive. this was more of a surreal fairytale and a comedy. weapons has to do with the death of trevor moore and zach's difficulty coping with such a senseless and tragic event. i think weapons reflects that brilliantly. the logic is slippery. something horrible happened that just doesn't make any sense, and the violent damage done is so abrupt and so permanent. the auxilllary characters represent various ways of coping with grief. the teacher bargains, and tries inappropriately to get close to other affected people that she doesn't have a relationship with. i wonder if that suggests that when trevor died, zach was compelled to get close to his spouse or other people in trevor's life that he didn't know well. josh represent anger, looking for someone to blame. the cop represents just crashing out and losing all focus and competence, he's completely uninvested in anything he's really doing. the principal rationalized and accepts everything, but continues to cope with stress through gluttony. looking forward to my second watch.

the children disappear at 0217 - this is a reasonable estimate of the time that trevor moore felll of his balcony and died. that's what this whole movie is about. i think you can't understand the film totally without lookiing into the wkuk and understanding what happened there. RIP trevor moore. sadly, he died as barbarian was in the works, and zach absolutely intended to take his comedy brothers along with him. in fact, trevor moore was probably on track to be an even bigger success.

by Anonymousreply 8August 9, 2025 4:38 PM

here's zach and trevor moore laughing shortly before trevor's death - making fun of their friends because zach didn't put them in barbarian,.

i think it's a black comedy thriller, not a horror. it's a mix of camp and david lynch style surreal stress

by Anonymousreply 10August 9, 2025 4:42 PM

r6 can you even explain what the fuck you mean by that

by Anonymousreply 11August 9, 2025 4:43 PM

give me an example of a story that wasn't constructed

by Anonymousreply 12August 9, 2025 4:43 PM

Cinema buffs, is it better than Sinners?

by Anonymousreply 13August 9, 2025 5:04 PM

I think it has the look of a graphic novel.

by Anonymousreply 14August 9, 2025 5:05 PM

Looks dumb.

by Anonymousreply 15August 9, 2025 5:24 PM

Thank you for sharing, r15.

by Anonymousreply 16August 9, 2025 5:26 PM

I’m trying to watch “Barbarian”, but I have a stubborn soup.

by Anonymousreply 17August 9, 2025 5:30 PM

R13, much better than Sinners - which I thought was overrated.

by Anonymousreply 18August 9, 2025 7:25 PM

Both Weapons and Sinners are highly overrated. Hollywood and film Twitter are so desperate for original films that they will hype up anything now.

Sinners was a slog during the first half, and dissolved into a silly vampire movie during its second act. Get Out was better directed and had a better story.

by Anonymousreply 19August 9, 2025 8:34 PM

I saw it today and really enjoyed it. The twist was unexpected. I went in thinking psychological thriller—perhaps, but it's a fun ride. See it in IMAX.

by Anonymousreply 20August 10, 2025 12:36 AM

Yeah, it's the only movie this year that isn't a fucking superhero CGI slop-fest. Of course they love it.

by Anonymousreply 21August 10, 2025 12:57 AM

I enjoyed it despite the bury your gays trope. Amy was camp as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 22August 11, 2025 10:52 PM

I had a great time. Deliberately didn't read anything about it ahead of time, only saw the trailers. Lots of twists. The third act is over the top.

by Anonymousreply 23August 12, 2025 2:24 AM

I also saw it today and loved it! I knew nothing about it either going in. It’s a long film, but you are never bored at any time. It’s part mystery, part horror and occasionally very funny. I highly recommend it. I wasn’t familiar with the director, but I’m interested now in seeing more of his work. I see he’s married to Sara Paxton who plays one of the parents of a missing child.

Also, I liked how they used a lot of unknown actors (to me). See this film!

by Anonymousreply 24August 15, 2025 9:22 PM

I saw it today, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't consider myself a horror film aficionado, or at least I like very few of them, Hereditary being an exception. But this is an exceptionally well made film. If you know movies, you will see reference after reference to other great films. If you just go for the jump scares, there are plenty along with comedic elements. The cast is excellent. Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Amy Madigan, Benedict Wong are standouts. And every minor role is important. The soundtrack is perfect. The screenplay is very well written, which is not typical in horror films. Camerawork is excellent--the director credits Magnolia. The ending is a surprise (homage to Euripides) and satisfying without being pat. Treat yourself and see it in a theater!

by Anonymousreply 25August 15, 2025 11:57 PM

It’s really not that great. The bar is set so low these days.

by Anonymousreply 26August 15, 2025 11:58 PM

You sound fun, R26. What do you consider a great film of this type?

by Anonymousreply 27August 16, 2025 1:24 AM

[quote]but I’m interested now in seeing more of his work

Watch Barbarian, r24. Don't read about it, don't watch a trailer...just watch it.

by Anonymousreply 28August 16, 2025 1:28 AM

Saw the trailer and knew I'd probably never see it. I like the fact they don't revel the whole movie in the trailer, as most do. But I went to Spoiler.com to see what it was about and after reading the whole review I still have idea what it's about.

by Anonymousreply 29August 16, 2025 7:14 PM

They released three trailers, r29. The last one revealed too much.

by Anonymousreply 30August 16, 2025 7:39 PM

Madigan is a lot of fun in this but the film is just another zombie movie. More hysterical screeching, gratuitous gore, crazy violence as a substitute for clever, compelling writing. In the end, the film makes no sense. Not garbage but pretty damn close.

by Anonymousreply 31August 17, 2025 12:00 AM

Surprise surprise. Don’t get attached to the gay characters. They’re the first go.

by Anonymousreply 32August 17, 2025 1:20 AM

It’s most certainly not at the level of something like The Exorcist. It’s fine as far as today’s fare goes.

by Anonymousreply 33August 17, 2025 1:30 AM

The Exorcist had a best-selling book to work from, r33, and I doubt Zach compares himself to Friedkin. This is definitely as cinematic as The Exorcist is.

by Anonymousreply 34August 17, 2025 2:02 AM

Bingo @ r31. Don't bother with this piece of crap. It is completely pointless.

Prediction: There will be a lot of people wearing bad red wigs, ugly glasses, and big red lips this Halloween season.

by Anonymousreply 35August 17, 2025 5:48 AM

The best scene from any horror movie. Written by pre-Oscar winner Bill Condon.

by Anonymousreply 36August 17, 2025 8:37 AM

That acclaim gets thrown around a lot nowadays. I heard that about Hereditary. It's more suspenseful than an actual horror movie

by Anonymousreply 37August 17, 2025 9:57 AM

[quote]So what music would Gladys listen to?

[quote]I think she likes very dissonant jazz, and I think she also likes show tunes. That just makes her feel good, and she can bop around with those as she’s pricking her finger.

by Anonymousreply 38August 19, 2025 3:21 AM

Why does it say in the trailer it’s based on a true story?

by Anonymousreply 39August 19, 2025 4:04 AM

To give it verisimilitude, r39.

by Anonymousreply 40August 19, 2025 4:15 AM

It’s not the first movie to claim to be based on a true story even though it’s almost completely fictional, R39. And most of the films that do that are horror movies.

Fargo also does it, but in a tongue-in-cheek way.

by Anonymousreply 41August 19, 2025 4:23 AM

I just saw this yesterday. Great movie and disturbing.

I loved the gay couple with their matching Disney t-shirts and that cute little eating hand gesture Wong makes as his husband was bringing in the food. It looked like they had a comfortable life. Oh well.

I also liked that the houses all looked really lived in.

by Anonymousreply 42August 22, 2025 1:05 PM

I also liked it a lot. Gladys helps a lot, she is a lot of fun. I also loved Barbarian. I do not think it is better than Sinners.

by Anonymousreply 43August 22, 2025 1:30 PM

Finally, a well done Original Movie. Altho, SPOILER ALERT...the end reminded me of "Suddenly Last Summer".

by Anonymousreply 44August 22, 2025 2:05 PM

R44, I thought the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2025 2:08 PM

I would totally have Wong as my husbear.

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2025 2:08 PM

[quote]I also liked that the houses all looked really lived in.

I noticed this too. The houses and the clothes weren't "Hollywood middle class," they actually looked real-life middle class. Hollywood only gets this right every once in a while.

by Anonymousreply 47August 23, 2025 12:11 AM

Because it was filmed in Atlanta and Covington, Georgia.

by Anonymousreply 48August 23, 2025 12:17 AM

Real people with flaws. This is the first time I've seen Julia Garner and I was immediately impressed that she wasn't afraid to be unlikeable.

by Anonymousreply 49August 23, 2025 12:20 AM

r48 even movies and tv shows filmed on location can be "Hollywood middle class."

by Anonymousreply 50August 23, 2025 12:36 AM

[Quote] Both Weapons and Sinners are highly overrated.

I haven’t seen Sinners but Weapons is not at all overrated. It’s very strong storytelling and fascinating from start to finish.

It’s also not a black comedy as someone suggested. It absolutely has comic elements here and there. I’m tempted to refer to one in particular but it would be a spoiler.

by Anonymousreply 51August 23, 2025 1:35 AM

The comic elements are *perfectly* placed, r51. We deserve that sort of release at those points.

by Anonymousreply 52August 23, 2025 2:24 AM

Amy Madigan deserves a Best Supporting Actress nomination for this. She was excellent as Aunt Gladys.

by Anonymousreply 53August 23, 2025 2:33 AM

She'll definitely get a nomination, r53.

by Anonymousreply 54August 23, 2025 2:35 AM

Madigan played Aunt Gladys well enough that she didn’t become a cartoon. She looked like one but the malevolence came through.

by Anonymousreply 55August 23, 2025 2:48 AM

Aunt Gladys is the only witch in the movie.

In the TV show “Bewitched,” the nosy nextdoor neighbor was named Gladys, and is the only female character who *wasn’t* a witch.

by Anonymousreply 56August 23, 2025 4:30 PM

[quote]In the TV show “Bewitched,” the nosy nextdoor neighbor was named Gladys, and is the only female character who *wasn’t* a witch.

Excuse me?

by Anonymousreply 57August 23, 2025 4:34 PM

I don't think Aunt Gladys was related to the family at all. I believe she’s a witch hundreds of years old (she called tuberculosis "consumption," which the principal of the school found odd and noted that it was an archaic word that's no longer in use) who somehow met the Lilys and got into their minds, planting false memories, since they don’t even really remember her, and she must have done the same with several other families. Zero blood ties, just a parasite looking for the next victim.

by Anonymousreply 58August 25, 2025 10:33 PM

I loved the voice Amy Madigan used for this movie when Aunt Gladys was trying to charm people--it was so unexpected. She was superb in this--she and Benedict Wong were the two standouts, along with Alden Ehrenreich (whom I did not recognize until the credits).

The ending was both hilarious and horrible. It left me feeling so jangled afterwards.

I loved that the movie did not connect all the dots while you were watching it, but that you could pretty much put most of them together afterwards if you thought about it.

The ending is also one of the best filmed sequences I've seen in years. There are surprisingly shots aned angles but it happens so quickly you don;t really have time to take it all in, and you're left both laughing and horrified.
