Christina Applegate Hospitalized for Kidney Infection

Christina Applegate has been hospitalized for a kidney infection, which has since spread to both kidneys, causing her to be hospitalized with "so much pain" she said she's "screaming."

The Married... With Children alum, 53, recorded the Tuesday, Aug. 5, episode of MeSsy, the podcast she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, from an L.A. hospital as she struggled with severe pain that made her feel like her appendix was bursting.

“I’m home and have been treated for the kidney infection," Applegate said in a statement to PEOPLE, via her representative, Tuesday afternoon. "As far as my ongoing stomach thing, it’s a work in progress. I was there 7 days."

While in Europe visiting family, Applegate explained to Sigler that she began to feel unwell. On the flight back, however, she decided to go straight to the hospital, explaining she didn’t want to wake up at 3 a.m. and need to run to the emergency room.

“I'm like, I wanna be admitted,” Applegate said, sharing her frustration with treatment during her multiple sclerosis struggle.

She continued, “I'm staying here because I want answers. I want every test that you can possibly think of or ones that you haven't even thought of, and I want them done.”

Someone please write the "Get up, Christina, we love you" correctly. Or is that right?

by Anonymousreply 1August 8, 2025 11:22 PM

Sad that her health has been so bad.

by Anonymousreply 2August 8, 2025 11:22 PM

Christina Applegate, you gotta put me on

I read about this at the beginning of the week. I hope she improves, but she's been pretty vocal about how her quality of life is very poor and she seems to be deteriorating.

Hopefully, this will be managed/knocked out with antibiotics and she'll be sprung from the hospital soon. However, her body is not making it easy for her to live her life.

I had a "step-Aunt" (the wife of one of my step-Dad's cousins) who was diagnosed with MS and she went from using a cane to being in a wheelchair to dying over the course of 10 years or so. Granted, this was in the olden days of the '80s. Hopefully we've progressed with treatments since then, but I really don't know. I just know it's a progressive disease that is still incurable.

However, that actress (Jamie Something) from the Sopranos has MS too, but she seems to have a version that is much less debilitating than Christina's is. I've seen her in pharmaceutical ads for some MS medication/treatment. She looks almost the same as she always has and seems quite active.

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2025 11:32 PM

I've always liked her. Even in bad situations she can still find humor.

[quote]The Dead to Me actress shared that doctors thought her condition could be a urinary tract infection, and questioned her wiping technique.

[quote]“Like, what am I back-wiping? Like, seriously, I'm 53,” she said, explaining that at a previous visit to the hospital, she’d been asked if she was wiping from front to back, as is recommended by doctors. Applegate said she has “the cleanest vagina … I'm a clean girl down yonder.”

For some reason MS seems pretty common in Canada, or at least where I live. I currently know 5 people diagnosed with it, and each has very different symptoms. I’ve probably known at least 20 people in my lifetime who have had or has MS. That’s kind of sobering now that I think about it. I like Christina a lot and hope hers is the type of MS that’s not overall too debilitating. She seems like a really good person and mother.

by Anonymousreply 6August 8, 2025 11:41 PM

I know two people with MS. One lives a totally normal life with very little problems and the other one goes through phases from totally normal to full-blown pain.

by Anonymousreply 7August 8, 2025 11:42 PM

The MS makes you urinate a lot which leads to UTIs. That’s probably what happened. If a UTI is left untreated you’ll end up in the state she was in. You can lose a kidney. Kidney pain is no joke.

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2025 11:42 PM

I just saw her interviewed by Katey Sagal. Christina looks great. Too bad she feels like crap. I can’t wait for her book.

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2025 11:43 PM

A UTI can cause sepsis, which of course is extremely serious.

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2025 11:44 PM

r4 "However, that actress (Jamie Something)"

Perhaps you mean Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who is mentioned IN OP'S POST?

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2025 11:44 PM

r11 you seem especially OUTRAGED that I missed that when I skimmed OP's ARTICLE.

Perhaps consider redirecting your outrage toward a more WORTHY CAUSE?

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2025 11:57 PM

[quote]The MS makes you urinate a lot which leads to UTIs. That’s probably what happened.

Not only does MS lead to increased urgency, it makes it harder to fully empty the bladder. The resulting urinary retention increases the risk of UTI. My grandfather had frequent kidney complications from MS due to all of that and it was a nightmare. Jamie-Lynn Sigler never impressed me much as an actress, but when she 'came out' about her diagnosis she spoke candidly about her bladder complications and I admired her for that.

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2025 11:59 PM

Hope she gets better soon.

by Anonymousreply 14August 8, 2025 11:59 PM

r12 Calm down, sweetie. It's ok. It was far from outrage.

by Anonymousreply 15August 9, 2025 12:21 AM

Jamie-Lynn was on Pyramid recently and I noticed they went to commercial before she walked to the winners' circle, so I assume she's ambulatory only some of the time.

Christina is a good egg and a good comedian. I wish her well.

by Anonymousreply 16August 9, 2025 12:48 AM

Selma Blair also has MS. She and Christina starred in The Sweetest Thing together several years ago.

That liar, Enty, had a blind and a reveal at some point that there was some nefarious reason why they both got the disease and it had something to do with being drugged by the same person (also allegedly in show biz).

That's probably a load of shit, but I thought I'd mention it since I recalled seeing that a few years ago from someone from here who linked to the BI.

by Anonymousreply 17August 9, 2025 12:55 AM

I just really hope Christina doesn’t end up killing herself. She seems really over everything. She says she’s in pain every single day and can’t even get to the bathroom so she wears diapers. She’s stuck in bed and can’t walk and can’t stand in the shower.

From what I know about Christina from people who know herself personally. She was always a hippie at heart, beyond loving and supportive of everyone she’s ever come into contact with. It’s so awful everything she keeps going through. Katey Sagal is with her in bed all the time and Ed O’Neill calls her constantly. They talk for hours. Thankfully she has them.

by Anonymousreply 18August 9, 2025 1:00 AM

Didn't Enty have another BI once that linked the MS cases (Emma Caulfield from Buffy is another one) to some kind of cosmetic treatment that was popular in the early '00s?

by Anonymousreply 19August 9, 2025 1:02 AM

Uh, r19 - I just said that at r17.

by Anonymousreply 20August 9, 2025 1:04 AM

Oops...i misread your post. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 21August 9, 2025 1:05 AM

MS is insidious and the degree to which it affects people seems to vary quite a bit. I have a childhood friend who was diagnosed with it, and she is apparently completely wheelchair bound and goes through periods of debilitating symptoms where she can't really speak. I had intermittently been in contact with her and we reconnected while I was in grad school on the opposite side of the country about six years ago—she called me one day out of the blue and at that time seemed to be doing well. No mention of anything out of the ordinary. She randomly stopped contacting me and I couldn't get a hold of her for almost two years, which at the time I chalked up to probable substance abuse as she had a history of drug addiction and being unreachable.

About a year ago, she found me via social media and explained to me everything that had occurred. We made plans to meet, and she warned me that it would be shocking for me to see her in the state she was in, especially during her flare-ups. I told her I didn't care and wanted to see her, but the plan fell through; she went MIA and I haven't heard from her since. I don't know if she's embarrassed or simply doesn't want to see people, but the whole thing makes me sad.

by Anonymousreply 22August 9, 2025 1:17 AM

My cousin has MS and it’s very sad. Bladder issues, weakness, you name it but is still able to walk w/o much assistance.

My God! Christina is really suffering and bad off. I wish her the best and send positive energy. I hate this.

by Anonymousreply 23August 9, 2025 1:48 AM

[quote]The Married... With Children alum, 53,

Isn't this a little ridiculous? I think she's got a few more accomplishments to her name by now. But then People is a miserable publication.

by Anonymousreply 24August 9, 2025 3:49 AM

[quote] Didn't Enty have another BI once

You do know that the owner of that site admitted that he made everything up, right? He’s a MAGA freak and a stalker.

by Anonymousreply 25August 9, 2025 3:57 AM

My cousin has MS. She's had a catheter for at least 25 years.

by Anonymousreply 26August 9, 2025 3:57 AM

R24, Married… with Children is really hot again now with the TikTok generation.

by Anonymousreply 27August 9, 2025 3:57 AM

My wonderful uncle died of MS in the early '00s.

I was hoping things had improved by now. I guess I took Jamie-Lynn Sigler's case as a sign that they had, forgetting this is a very individual disease.

I am really sad to hear about Christina's struggles. She's so talented and too young to be sidelined by this.

by Anonymousreply 28August 9, 2025 4:09 AM

What can be done to help people who are dealing with this?

I rocked the MS Read-a-Thon in the '80s. I can do it again.

by Anonymousreply 29August 9, 2025 4:11 AM

I just read on Facebook(!) that researchers/scientists have just discovered a bacterium in the gut responsible for inciting the immune response that starts the whole MS train rolling down the track, and that this discovery will hopefully lead to treatment via antibiotics to prevent MS from developing as well as treatments for those already suffering from MS.

Let's hope that true and might actually offer some hope to Christina (and others) who are suffering from this.

I'd provide a link, but FB refreshes so often that it's already gone from my feed.

by Anonymousreply 30August 9, 2025 4:51 AM

Have had kidney stones and and a carcinoma in one kidney. The stones passing was the worst pain I've ever experienced. Heavy meds helped, but moderately. Not sure what an infection in both kidneys would feel like, but it sounded horrible for here. Am so sad to hear that she's been in so much pain.

by Anonymousreply 31August 9, 2025 5:47 AM

I read that they linked MS to the herpes virus.

by Anonymousreply 32August 9, 2025 6:14 AM

Christina tested positive for the BRCA gene and then she got breast cancer. Her mother also had breast cancer back in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 33August 9, 2025 6:15 AM

christina is the nicest person and completely down to earth for a celebrity. my heart goes out to her.

by Anonymousreply 34August 9, 2025 6:24 AM

[quote]For some reason MS seems pretty common in Canada, or at least where I live.

There have been a few studies that show the father you get away from the equator, the higher percentage of MS. They are not sure why but when people before the age 15 move to a different location close the the equator, their risk level drops to whatever it is in that community. There are other studies that also point to vitamin D deficiency. I wonder if the two are linked. People in Canada are probably not out in the sun as much as say people in Southern California.

by Anonymousreply 35August 9, 2025 6:31 AM

To R17 and R19 : the problem is that humans are good at pattern recognition but also try to find sense in every statistic fluke. For a less dire example, check out the birthday paradoxon. With a pool of actors and a couple of them ending up suffering from MS, it is not only to be expected but nearly a given that some will have been in the same production. It might be connected in another way but more likely it's not.

by Anonymousreply 36August 9, 2025 7:01 AM

My mom had MS. I wouldn't wish this shit on my worst enemy.

by Anonymousreply 37August 9, 2025 7:06 AM

[quote]I just read on Facebook(!) that researchers/scientists have just discovered a bacterium in the gut responsible for inciting the immune response that starts the whole MS train rolling down the track,

Not to bring politics into everything, but multiple sclerosis is one of the diseases that researchers think mRNA vaccines might be extremely effective for preventing and treating. Unfortunately that idiot RFK Jr has just cancelled $500 million of research into mRNA vaccines (because *he* thinks they're dangerous, even though the Covid mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna saved millions of lives).

by Anonymousreply 38August 9, 2025 3:49 PM

And I’m hoping, R38, other countries are able to scoop up those scientists and fund those studies.

by Anonymousreply 39August 9, 2025 4:39 PM

mRNA treatments have had so much positive impact against COVID and now HIV, but as a scientist who worked on MS, I'm skeptical that silencing EBV or HSV (or what ever virus or entities that may cause it) would also stop the disease after the initial autoimmune responses have been initiated. It would be necessary to specifically eliminate all of the immune cells involved with this complex disease. Am retired now, but will try to find that article.

The varying severity of this disease is so random. Its unpredictability seems cruel. It must be so frustrating for her to be dealing with this total lack of control and unpredictability, and especially the pain.

The severe funding cuts to the NIH and NSF for basic research are crimes against humanity.

by Anonymousreply 40August 9, 2025 4:46 PM

God I feel bad for her. I know that regular people contract debilitating diseases all the time - it's just rare that you hear about a celebrity having these issues.

She's young. Good thing she has money for treatment and comfort.

Knock on wood. I don't know what I would do if this happened to me.
