Michael Parkinson
Has there ever been a better interviewer than Michael Parkinson?
The son of a Yorkshire miner, he rose through the ranks of local British newspapers until he landed his own show Parkinson in 1971, which has run in some sort of capacity until 2014. Between runs of Parkinson, he hosted Desert Island Discs and wrote op-eds for the Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph.
Simply put, he is the gold standard of talk show hosts.

Parky was a class act. His interviews with Dame Edna Everage are priceless. He had the talent and innate ability to know how to allow her to play off him, a talent that many interviewers sadly did not possess (Conan O'Brien & Jay Leno)

Thanks r11. Haven't seen that in a while. Love them all and he was excellent.
I'm afraid that level of charm is very hard to find in todays' Tic Tok swamp.

This interview with Zsa Zsa Gabor was fantastic as well. She's quite a storyteller, and they had really good rapport.

Michael was a true gentleman. Loved his interviews, he let his guests talk. Bumped into him in a bookshop in Sydney in the 0000's one summer. He and his wife came Downunder often to watch a lot of cricket and rest up.

I remember one interview with Barry Humphries as Dame Edna that was so funny and subversive. Humphries managed to get Parkinson all flustered and broken out with laughter. He simply blurted out “I’m going HOME!”.
I also appreciated the time he asked Joan Rivers about plastic surgery, and she defensively asked back “Why me? How f’ing DARE you!”. They had pretty great timing together. She added, laughingly, “I’ll get it when I’m ready”.

He was an asshole. A sexist pig to Helen Mirren and Meg Ryan. Known as one of the worst in the biz.

Who's posting these obscure British people, as if anyone here has interest in a stale little enclave in the big, big world?

He did seem a bit the dirty old man, but was otherwise much better than nasty, always interrupting Charlie Rose or demented Larry King.

R11 I've seen that interview (if you can call it that!) with Dame Edna, Sharon and Dame Judi a number of times. It always has me in tears. I've seen Dame Edna perform twice in San Francisco. She was hilarious.

He wasn't sexist to Helen Mirren, he just said she is known for being well endowed.

I always loved him and enjoyed his shows. Kind and respectful, comedic and a wonderful interviewer. And always so handsome.

He and Kenneth Williams hated each other, even though Williams appeared on his show more than once.
But then Williams was insane and reputedly killed his own father. They just couldn't get enough proof to pin it on him.
